Cross-Genre Guest Vocalists

What are the most and least effective examples of this? What's the future of this contrivance? Was Chuck D + Sonic Youth its zenith or nadir? Should Modest Mouse invite Mark Greenway to guest-growl on their next single?

I know the worst example:

Jay-z and Linkin Park

it should have been the soundtrack to "Passion of Christ" because it was...it was like watching Jesus die.

I really want to hear Mark Greenway as a "surprise" guest vocalist for various folks. E.g., Mark busts uninvited into a Sugababes session, and to their delight, lays down a monster chorus for their next smash hit single.

I think I could probably sell that as a series to MTV as their version of "Queer Eye". Decapitated Corpse for the Vapid Bimbo, maybe.

I thought the Johnny Cash appearance on Zooropa was a bit of a suprise - albiet, a kinda stinky one.

The best known example could be Moody Blues with the London Festival Orchestra on Days of Future Past.

It's a stretch, but The Ex's In The Fishtank series may be worth mention, i especially like "Pleasure As Usual" on the Tortoise EP.

Elvis Costello and the Brodsky Quartet presented some fine ideas.

....and when is Kid Rock gonna work w/ Burt Bacharach. ACK!

Does Whitney Houston and Material count? That was weird.

Johnny Cash's appearance on 'The Wanderer' is the only U2 song I really like, except for when they became 'Passengers' and released what MUST be their best album (by far)...

...one of whose songs guest-stars Luciano Pavarotti, and does it pretty well!

For all the hype leading up to it, hearing Chuck D merely say "Word up" or whatever on Kool Thing was a huge disappointment. It's not like he even rapped. Jello Biafra at the beginning of The Iceberg was much better.

Until he died, getting William S. Burroughs to mumble something was the equivalent of getting Johnny Cash. Who's could fill the elder-rebel role now?

What is it with reggae toasting appearing in the most ludicrous places? (see: the Chameleons, "Miracles and Wonders," a pox on their otherwise impeccable discography)

Daryl Hall on B-Legit's "Ghetto Smile". George Clinton on tracks by Dre, Digital Underground, etc., although how cross-genre could it be if they're damn near his own songs

tremendoid (tremendoid), Thursday, 16 November 2006 02:30 (nineteen years ago)

KRS-One and R.E.M.

OTM!

Argh! I had forgotten about that one. Or rather blocked it out.
