So I guess coming to "Heartbeats" after hearing Silent Shout and Fever Ray wasn't the right way to do this... :-(

"Heartbeats" (and the whole of Deep Cuts) sounds very of its time (i.e. the early 00s), but the melody is still gorgeous and some of the sounds are still pretty. It would probably work better if it wasn't so retro-electro though. The thing that made me like Fever Ray much more than any Knife album is (despite the obvious 80s influence) how timeless/out of time the whole album sounds. It's like in a world of of it own, outside any trends.

"Pass This On" is probably my favorite Knife song...thanks in large part to its awesome music vid

stuff like "You Make Me Like Charity" gives a hint at the path they would go down, also remixes from the OneMusic session

for real. i was trying to put something from the fever ray record on a tape for someone, but it's all so different outside of its original little universe. things sound so much more dramatic pitched in with other stuff, whereas you don't notice how removed or distinct it sounds when you're caught up amid the album.

I can't really do POX since I've only heard Silent Shout and "Heartbeats", but I can say that these songs are really fantastic:

re: Fever Ray being in its own world, I think you could pretty easily put "Seven" or "Dry and Dusty" (if stretching) on a mixtape.

The only record I've heard that has a similar sort of feel to Fever Ray is Peter Gabriel's fourth self-titled album (also known as "Protection" in the US). Both have a similar way of mixing modern electronics to quasi-shamanistic chants and ritual beats. The difference, though, is that Gabriel comes to this point from prog/rock whereas Dreijer comes from electronic music/pop.

I don't really like "Heartbeats" in its Deep Cuts incarnation very much (the kinda Caribbean drum sound throws me off), but the OneMusic version is really really good and worth seeking out if you don't get what's great about this song.

I get that it's really good, it just didn't floor me the way the opening notes of "Silent Shout" did.

Hmmm... should really sit down and listen to Fever Ray properly, but something about her voice sits badly with me - maybe something to do with the fact Silent Shout was such a distinct album of its time and I associate her voice with that time perhaps a little too much.

yeah. i left them behind me after a while because of overplay, but coming back to them a few years later is really a lovely thing.

I think I might drop "Like A Pen" and "Lasagna" off my X in favor of "N.Y. Hotel" and "Forest Families"

really wish I could fit "A Lung" and "Reindeer" in there as well

So just noticed they pretty much created their whole sound template and singing style from “get out of my house” by Kate Bush.

Even the male vocals lol
