Should I see Dolly Parton live?

She's playing at the Niagara Casino-Rama (!) next week, there are tickets left for about $100 Canadian.

I haven't seen a good performance gig in a while -- i.e. one where the singer actually cares about putting on a good show -- and I'm pretty keen on all the Dolly-eras (70s country, 80s pop, 90s-00s rootsy stuff).

But is it worth $100?

It will likely be so completely surreal that it would totally be worth it. Her last single was awesome, too! 'Travelin' Thru'! Plus she have a big boohb.

I second all of that! And she knows how to modulate various degrees of camp (glee to high drama). Should be something online somewhere for you to watch (look for her CMT Crossroads with Melissa Etheridge, and the A&E channel's July 4th performance, her and the Brian Wilson Orchestra, and she's in this glittery Uncle Sam outfit, oowee)

"Travelin' Thru," despite its popularity, is shite, but I would gladly pay $100 to see Ms. Parton.

If the answer is "Maybe" then the answer is "Yes."

Dolly Parton live is probably the best gig I ever went to. She OWNS the theatre from the minute she steps on the stage. She has so much material that it's pretty much gold from start to finish, and all her one-liners, anecdotes and interludes are killer. Totally go.

Saw her a couple of years ago. Incredibly disappointing (although in fairness, it played well to the crowd). Scripted insincerity from start to finish, one-liners and anecdotes you've heard a thousand times before. Many vocals almost certainly lip-synched. Didn't really feel that she was "present" in any meaningful sense.

:( altho tbf i dont know if i will have heard dollys anecdotes a million times before, i am a pretty recent convert

whereas other people I know who saw her a year or two ago said it was fantastic and she's still got it. recent DVD from that tour is pretty great too. SO WHO KNOWS.

i want to believe

Yeah, she's a Total Pro, in that so much of the banter is well-worn ripostes and anecdotes, plus a heaping dose of corny schtick. Don't expect the thrill of spontaneity. However, if you're asking: can she still sing? The answer is yes. So chalk it up to paying homage to a living legend. Were Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard or Al Green as good as I wanted them to be? Honestly, no, but I'm glad I saw all three. Because frankly, you never know if this chance will be your last (see: Cash, James Brown, et al.).

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 16 March 2011 13:49 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, but she LIP-SYNCHS!

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 16 March 2011 15:27 (fourteen years ago)

She did/does? When I saw her, in a small club, she was not lip synching.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 16 March 2011 15:36 (fourteen years ago)

Huh, but yeah, I checked it out and I guess she completely owns up to it, at least recently. Go figure.

"Yes, there are portions of the songs in the show that are pre-recorded," she told Dollymania. "I tell you that at the beginning of the show when I say, 'If you notice some enhancement or doctoring in the show, it's not to fool or trick anyone. It's an effort to entertain by being able to have a bigger production and, hopefully, a better sound.'" Dolly declined to specify which numbers are live and which ones lip-synched, but she added: "Just know that it's all Dolly, by golly," and asked fans to enjoy the show, as they are the reason she is back on the road. "I'm doing it for you," she said. Thanks, Dolly!

that was the website thanking dolly by the way

Al Green WAS as good as I thought he'd be a few years back. Just amazing. Very glad I caught one of the last Sabbath shows with Ozzy before his voice totally went off the deep end.
