There's several bands on that list I've never heard. Pretty crap list anyway.

it could be a LOT worst, Like say if Rolling Stone compiled it, we'd see a lot more Fall Out Boy and Red Hot Chili Peppers in there

"Hey, there's no rappers on this list"
"Just throw Ghostface on there near the top"

Zachary Scott (Zach S), Friday, 17 November 2006 02:20 (nineteen years ago)

lists like this make me feel remarkably removed from the sphere of music criticism. hurrah.

voxtrot are neat.

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Friday, 17 November 2006 02:26 (nineteen years ago)

Since when were Bob Dylan and Ghostface Killa bands?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 17 November 2006 02:44 (nineteen years ago)

Zachary Scott otm.

Bob Dylan is my favorite band.

The Decembrists are incredibly annoying....but damn are they literate.

pernicus (pernicus), Friday, 17 November 2006 04:03 (nineteen years ago)

i love me some hold steady

t0dd swiss (immobilisme), Friday, 17 November 2006 04:26 (nineteen years ago)

32) Timbaland
- If you can make room for Sufjan Stevens on this list, but not Timbaland, you are certifiably insane. He's been on top of his game for years, and it seems like 2006 might have been his best year yet with amazing singles from Nelly Furtado and an incredible record from Justin Timberlake. Definitely the best music coming out of the states, pop or hip-hop, is from Timbo. - Soviet Panda

and what (ooo), Friday, 17 November 2006 04:57 (nineteen years ago)

I wish lists like this were based on something. People complain about the top 40 not being a meritocracy but at least they have some sort of foundation in reality. The only thing these lists ever give me any insight into is the psyche of the upper middle class, white male.

Period period period (Period period period), Friday, 17 November 2006 06:19 (nineteen years ago)

The whole cooler-than-thou Pitchforkization of music is the worst thing to happen since Tiananmen Square.

Rodney... (R. J. Greene), Friday, 17 November 2006 06:36 (nineteen years ago)

You'd almost think that the entire music community is made up of douchebags who somewhere in the back of their heads think they're Bob Dylan. That includes Dylan.

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Friday, 17 November 2006 06:40 (nineteen years ago)

why don't they just make an rss feed of indie blogs and let a computer tally up the posts?

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Friday, 17 November 2006 06:42 (nineteen years ago)

It's the standard "95% of the best music being made right now happens to all be within a very narrow sub-section of indie rock - but there's also one or two good rappers, old fogies, and oddball others" list

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Friday, 17 November 2006 06:43 (nineteen years ago)

But then I just don't like very many current rock bands.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Friday, 17 November 2006 06:44 (nineteen years ago)

duh, we all know that 95% of the best music being made right now happens to all be within a very narrow sub-section of dance music - but there's also one or two good rappers, old fogies, and oddball others

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Friday, 17 November 2006 06:47 (nineteen years ago)

;)

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Friday, 17 November 2006 06:47 (nineteen years ago)

It's also just another sign of the age of "music has to hit you over the head with how smart it is to be good"

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Friday, 17 November 2006 06:47 (nineteen years ago)

Decemberists, Hold Steady, TVOTR, Sufjan - they're all about wearing their college (or even grad) educations on their sleeve. It gets a bit tedious.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Friday, 17 November 2006 06:49 (nineteen years ago)

the decemberists are the only band i have ever walked out on (was there for the opener but really cause i had crush on girl who was going to see opener cause her friend said they were good. they were okay).

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Friday, 17 November 2006 06:53 (nineteen years ago)

he rhymed pantaloon with cartoon on this absurdly high note that was completely out of place and that was it

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Friday, 17 November 2006 06:54 (nineteen years ago)

I like:

1) TV On The Radio
4) Ghostface Killah
6) Bob Dylan (though I don't really know his new album)
11) Grizzly Bear
14) Joanna Newsom (again, haven't heard the new one yet)
22) Tom Waits (also have not heard new one)
29) Sonic Youth (not in love with the new one)
32) Timbaland

I guess I sorta like:

5) My Morning Jacket (12)
10) Cat Power
13) Wilco (36)
15) Sleater-Kinney (5)
16) Okkervil River (24)
18) Beirut
37) LCD Soundsystem (4)
39) Shearwater
23) Sufjan Stevens (1)
34) DangerMouse

I really don't like:

2) The Hold Steady (6)
3) The Decemberists (9)
25) Fiery Furnaces (8)
26) Ryan Adams (19)
27) M. Ward
12) My Chemical Romance

The rest I've either never heard of or just haven't heard enough stuff to really form a judgment. But I was surprised that there are a full 8 bands on there whose names don't even ring a bell.

Best show review ever

Confounded (Confounded), Friday, 17 November 2006 11:39 (nineteen years ago)

if you approve over more than a quarter of that list (and that's generous), you should probably rethink your life
