"Consumption of BEER leads to pseudo-military behavior. Thank about it - winos don't march. Whiskey guys don't march, either (sometimes they write poetry, which is often more horrible, though). Beer drinkers are into things that are sort of like marching - like football."

That makes a greak beer label.

Bobby Ganush (Uri Frendimein), Saturday, 18 November 2006 23:23 (nineteen years ago)

Great ale, as it turns out. HOWEVER, it doesn't taste like "Help, I'm a Rock."

Jamesy (SuzyCreemcheese), Saturday, 18 November 2006 23:28 (nineteen years ago)

wtf it's already unavailable at the one place online that is supposed to sell it. this news has arrived late.

Bobby Ganush (Uri Frendimein), Saturday, 18 November 2006 23:32 (nineteen years ago)

in Eugene I saw tons of this - Lagunitas is from Northern CA. First place I saw it was in the 7-11 down the street. It's like 7.2%, a nice hoppy strong ale.

It does seem somewhat ironic given Zappa's well-known stance on intoxicants.

Looks like Lagunitas themselves are out of this now. Late news indeed.

I, too, live in Eugene. Alas, I never once saw this stuff.

vartman (novaheat), Sunday, 19 November 2006 03:26 (nineteen years ago)

You do realize of course that Frank's stance on intoxicants was just a cover so that his serious music wouldn't be confused with drug music. The man had a separate room from the band so he could get as fucked up as he wanted in private and come up with strange ideas for music. This is entirely untrue, but he's not around to defend himself.

mmmmm that shit is good; i saw it at that store annex to the horsebrass over at 45th @ belmont here in portland

I'll never listen to "Titties and Beer" the same way again. In fact, I have no intention of ever playing it again anyways (last time was 15-16 years ago.)

The problem with American microbrews is that the packaging is uniformly more interesting than the contents. This is just another notch up in that sad arms race.

whatever you just cant handle the hops

millenarian (millenarian), Sunday, 19 November 2006 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

Microbrew tastes good for anything < 6 pack. The problem is it is high in hangover molecules and makes you feel bloated. I like to start off with a few tasty microbrew and then switch over to something weak and watery but hopefully high in alcohol, such as an ice beer. Failing that, any girly beer like Corona or Amstel will do.

Bobby Ganush (Uri Frendimein), Sunday, 19 November 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

I like the Lagunitas I've tried.

It's the lazy and immoral way to become super hip. (Austin, Still), Sunday, 19 November 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

It's true, I can't handle the hops. But I'm also being disingenuous, in that I drink plenty of microbrews. I have a degree in la-z-boy statistics, and my extensive research has concluded that the more kitsch and novelty in the label, the crappier the brew. My paper on this will be published next month.

no i actually agree with you; especially in oregon, i've had way too many nigh undrinkable, syrupy, and bitter micros. but that freak out ale is actually quite good!

millenarian (millenarian), Sunday, 19 November 2006 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

Ale is generally a safer bet than beer, in any case.

millenarian - I live right near there!

T. Weiss (Timmy), Monday, 20 November 2006 02:34 (nineteen years ago)

ugh, nasty zappa.

True enough, but at least it's not Joe's Garage brew. That'd have music lovers everywhere chukking the up at the first sip.

This was hoppier than I like, but still pretty good.

Lagunitas IPA is my favorite beer, but I have no opinion on this new beer, other than the fact that it smacks of Ben & Jerrys.

Thirsty Freaks, Daddy

OK now that I've namechecked one of the three or four Zappa songs I can tolerate I will bow out

the regular Lagunitas IPA and their Maximus IPA are both too floral for me to want to drink more than one or two. That said, they ARE good, and I enjoy their pilsner, which is something I don't normally go for.
