Yes, I remember reading the "Eagles tribute" angle in an issue of Look-In in around 1978.

I think Summernight City is a good deal weirder than this and that was a single.

The Tall Dwarfs covered "On and On and On." It is sublimely weird in its evocation of rock-star decadance without anything ever actually happening.
