Guitar effects

Saw Cursive on their tour recently. Tim Kasher was using a guitar effect that... kinda made his guitar sound like R2D2...

Does anyone know what this effect is?

was he holding anything over the strings, or do you think it was just a footswitch?

I only ask because sometimes when I have my amp turned up loud and I use my Ebow, it makes some strange, chirping, bit-crushed droid sounds.

I'm pretty sure it was a foot switch, he was playing individual notes. At first I thought ebow + some kind of pedal, but I think it was just a pedal because I couldn't really see anything in his hand. But, I could be wrong, it might have been an ebow.

"please! i don't care how many strong compositions medulla does or doesn't have on it, i have always hated the song "stronger"

the synths in it sound like R2D2 on ecstasy."

-me six hours ago.

i didn't know R2D2 was such a music reference! hehe

one year passes...

ok, so me and a mate make music on the pc, we record guitar into cubase then add effects later, using vsts or whatever...

BUT we've been offered a gig, and i want to play my guitar live using a laptop running software for effects rather than buying a rack or a load of pedals which i'm never gonna be able to afford.

so quality software guitar FX that i can use live with no timelag...

know nothing about this, any recommendations?

Hm, I wonder if that might've been a Sample-&-Hold pedal?

Tim Kasher is often seen using a Moog MF-102 Ring Modulator pedal live, so there's a good chance that might be what you heard.
