Playing thrash on guitar

How the hell is it possible? I'm by no means a guitar expert, but I randomly tried to learn some Municipal Waste today and I can't even play it twice as slow as they do. Anyone have any tips on where to start/how to get decent at playing typical thrash?

get the alternate picking downpat, get an instinctive feel for what the left hand should be doing, work on that palm-muting etc.

maybe start on some of the slower stuff...work your way up. for instance, start on 'seek and destroy' before progressing to say 'devil's island' or 'war ensemble'

are Metallica one of the few to play all downstrokes on fast riffs or is it fairly common?
