My My - Songs for the Gentle

So the search function is broken. So this may have been talked about before.

In any case, this deserves its own thread. Unbelievably good. Rhythmically complex, funky even, sexy weirdly. I wish there were vocals! And they should have put "Klatta" on there too. But still, transcendent.

It reminds me of when Paper records first came out and I was all "wow, you can do 'deep' but still use interesting sounds" and this is now like someone in house music has absorbed lessons from southern hip hop, 2-step and p funk and then expressed it through the most unlikely medium of synth-n-glitch minimal laptoppery.

And yes, blah blah, I'm sure people can name a dozen of other producers, probably from detroit, who did this 20 years ago, but come on. This is really fresh. To me My My deliver on what Alex Under promises but never quite reaches...

Mohel mohel - Songs for the gentile.

Dan Barramouss (jimnaseum), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 03:18 (nineteen years ago)

Bit of "jewish humour" there. Get it?

Dan Barramouss (jimnaseum), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 03:18 (nineteen years ago)

I really like this but to be honest I don't see the comparisons with Under too much. Reminds me of Akufen if he limited the number of microsamples he could use per track at some points. Not really listened to it enough to wax lyrical on it though. There was some discussion of this elsewhere iirc, but I don't think it had its own thread.

Dan Barramouss (jimnaseum), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 03:21 (nineteen years ago)

it's definitely talked up enough to have its own thread

My issue with Alex Under is that you feel his stuff is on the edge of being sexy and acute and sharp, but that in the end it's just slightly funkier minimal and not something more revelatory. Not that he isn't great, but great in a strictly genre way - like he's DJ Rush not Green Velvet...

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 03:42 (nineteen years ago)

i thought this was... ok. madly hyped. ifam OTM about Under. if only this was as good as he is!

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 03:43 (nineteen years ago)

'clean break' is fab, and then this...drops off entirely for the rest of the first half. but from 'pelourinho' on it's brilliant. i don't hear much at all which would make me think of alex under, it's closer to fuckpony et al.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 07:56 (nineteen years ago)

Err...what hype? I quite loved this for a while. Vocals would have ruined it though. Strange that 'Butterflies & Zebra's' wasn't included.

Omar (Omar), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 08:30 (nineteen years ago)

works as a nice downtempo lp, albeit one with house rhythms... (then there are the 12" tracks tacked on at the end)

a (rslvd), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 08:39 (nineteen years ago)

"from 'pelourinho' on it's brilliant"

Yeah, the last half of the album is unstoppable. Their live sets are superb too.

braveclub (braveclub), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 10:56 (nineteen years ago)

Actually no. I mean everything from 'Eleventh Hour' on (ie most of the album).

braveclub (braveclub), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 11:01 (nineteen years ago)

Butterflies and Zebras is as good as anything on this yes, thought that was odd.

Not sure from where the Alex Under comparisons are coming...ridiculous.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 16:04 (nineteen years ago)

What I think it sounds like is......music M.A.N.D.Y plays in DJ sets...I don't know that there are other artists but this is definitely the side of Playhouse style that intersects with Get Physical, the basslines are seriously Get Physical style...to me.

Really good record.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

I can't wait to hear and hopefully buy this album.

On a semi-related note, does anyone know the second last track on their Resident Advisor mix. The one that goes "Don't lie to house music, you think you can go do rn'b for a few years and go back to house. . ."

Thomas Mehlt (Tokyo Ghost Stories), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

It's Oblivion - Kerri Chandler.

he shoots, he scores!

Good Dog (Good Dog), Thursday, 23 November 2006 01:43 (nineteen years ago)

As the source of the 'ridiculous' alex under comparison I have to clarify - I don't think it sounds like alex under, but that the mood and feel of the tracks seems to me to be the mood and feel that he is striving for but doesn't reach. That's obviously a very subjective judgement so hey...

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 23 November 2006 08:50 (nineteen years ago)

I quite like Under, just he seems so much more track focussed, I mean he hasn't even done an album yet has he?

This definitely feels like an album...to listen to. Reminds me a little of Isolée.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 23 November 2006 09:47 (nineteen years ago)

He does have an album - Dispositivos De Mi Granja on Trapez in 2005. It's a pretty track-focused album though.

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 23 November 2006 09:52 (nineteen years ago)

Ah...shit I didn't realise that...

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 23 November 2006 10:10 (nineteen years ago)

Ronan is right, My My are now the most M.A.N.D.Y.-like act ever (like if M.A.N.D.Y. still knew how to come up with tunes to match their production style). Esp. their remix of "Les Djinns".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 23 November 2006 11:12 (nineteen years ago)

M.A.N.D.Y are still doing tunes to match their production style. I like that Take two four track that is on their At The Controls and I think Walter mentioned they were in the studio together on something.

There is actually a strong similarity between My My and what Will Saul is doing with Aus music. I know they've done remixes, but that more organic, warm and natural sound that they both play in their own stuff is really lush.

rchinn (rchinn), Thursday, 23 November 2006 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

track focused and hypnotic

Resident Advisor mix alert! (can't be bothered to sign up so I'll have to wait till sunday to hear it.)

Omar (Omar), Thursday, 23 November 2006 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know, I sort of feel like recent M.A.N.D.Y. tracks sound great but I can never remend them off the top of my head.
