Janet Jackson - 'Come Give Your Love To Me'

I recently came across this episode of American Bandstand where Janet Jackson performed songs from her very first album, and the second song she performed kocked me off my ass. It fits perfectly on the Saved By The Bell soundtrack and kinda reminds me of Cassie. I'm only 22 so I wasnt alive when this album came out in '82....was it well known or successful at the time or totally ignored?

Not totally ignored, obviously, but no, she wasn't really recognized for her music until "Control." I'm not sure I was even aware of her first two albums at the time.

The album was successful - it went to a respectable #63 on Billboard's pop album charts. However, Ms. Jackson must obviously be trying to forget this period; even though "Young Love" and "Come Give Your Love To Me" were hits (on black radio), these songs mysteriously don't appear on her best-of, as if she wanted people to believe that her first album was CONTROL.

Not a Jackson fan, but "C.G.Y.L.T.M." remains a guilty pleasure - I'm a sucker for all those soul records from the early '80s that imitated new wave (Rick James'"Super Freak," Ozone's "Li'l Suzy," etc.).

Ouch. I wasn't listening close enough at the time, maybe -- Whitburn shows that she did have several Top Twenty R&B hits before "Control," including the ones Hoodoo mentions. She did make a point of wiping the slate clean, as it were, when she hooked up with Jam and Lewis.

As for new wave and R&B, it was a great time -- D Train . . . (sigh).

Again, I think the earliest song on her greatest-hits album is "What Have You Done For Me Lately." Too bad - if I were any kind of JJ fan, I would have loved to hear her hits in chrono order on one album just so I could hear how abruptly she went from nice-girl teen bubblegum to bad-woman adult dance music.

I think "Come Give Your Love To Me" would've been a huge hit if MTV played videos by black artists at the time.

but then she went to "nice lady pop bubblegum" enough times afterwards.

u know, i'm kind of interested to listen to her first 2 albums -- i feel like no one talks about them at all

Hmm. Yeah I'm gonna check this song out. I'd rather hear her early stuff than deal with anything that came after the 80's.

I wish this American Bandstand performance was on You Tube. :(

Are her first two albums even in print?

Ooh. Finally heard this song. It's fantastic. Wow. I wonder what the rest of her early stuff sounds like. Is it funky at all?

"Young Love," her first hit, was straight-up soul bubblegum, like something Stacy Lattisaw would have done.

As for "Come Give...", now that more '80s singles are turning up in used stores, I gotta keep on the lookout for that one. I don't think I've heard this one since Reagan was president and Janet had a recurring role on DIFF'RENT STROKES, but I can still hear that spooky minor-key melody in my head to this day.

Yeah, but as I said elsewhere, I think this album is nothing more than a poor imitation of Michael Jackson's "Off The Wall" or Chic.

Bimble, Sunday, 30 September 2007 04:56 (eighteen years ago)

I know, that's why I'm looking for the SINGLE and not the entire LP.
