For now, haven't moved to InnoDB. I do want to in time, but the problem was no FULLTEXT indexing, and long-running threads were killing the old site, so no search. Now, in a sense, people have got used to that now, and seem happy with using Google, but they hadn't when I started, and wanted a search built in.
What I would like to do is to let Google index the new one, and then move to InnoDB. A mirror is a possibility, but it's a good bit of additional complexity, and one of the goals of the new one was to keep it simple (should always be a goal). Another thing I did consider was having a completely separate search engine, like Lucene just indexing on the side. Neither are done, though.
Row-level locking isn't a major issue, as it's only admin functions that do UPDATEs, and they're the only things that are serialised behind reads/inserts in MyISAM. Transactions are a good idea, though. And the thing being journalled would help when the database gets stuffed. InnoDB is altogether a better idea, but one thing at a time.
That said, it's not just as easy as shifting to InnoDB. Its autoincrement stuff works completely differently to MyISAM, so I'll need to code the autoincrement stuff manually. Without doubt, there will be other subtle differences that will need to be accounted for too.
By all means start a tech discussion thread.

But there are a kabillion other forums that have that stuff already! I like the barebones approach of ILX.
Also, I'm amazed at how much faster it loads now. Kudos!
