This is the new ILX Server, with old ILX code.

Does this mean that new ILX code is baking?

Good thing I'm home with the flu so's I could catch the relaunch. Or not. The flu sucks.

I wonder if our good DBAs/coders decided to change to Innodb for row-locking with a periodically-updated MyISAM mirror for searching or what. Where's the ILX tech discussion thread, eh?

Braise: pointed offal. (goodbra), Thursday, 4 January 2007 00:12 (nineteen years ago)

I WAS WONDERING EXACTLY THE SAME THING

poxy fuled already.
it felt good.

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 4 January 2007 01:10 (nineteen years ago)

Braise,

For now, haven't moved to InnoDB. I do want to in time, but the problem was no FULLTEXT indexing, and long-running threads were killing the old site, so no search. Now, in a sense, people have got used to that now, and seem happy with using Google, but they hadn't when I started, and wanted a search built in.

What I would like to do is to let Google index the new one, and then move to InnoDB. A mirror is a possibility, but it's a good bit of additional complexity, and one of the goals of the new one was to keep it simple (should always be a goal). Another thing I did consider was having a completely separate search engine, like Lucene just indexing on the side. Neither are done, though.

Row-level locking isn't a major issue, as it's only admin functions that do UPDATEs, and they're the only things that are serialised behind reads/inserts in MyISAM. Transactions are a good idea, though. And the thing being journalled would help when the database gets stuffed. InnoDB is altogether a better idea, but one thing at a time.

That said, it's not just as easy as shifting to InnoDB. Its autoincrement stuff works completely differently to MyISAM, so I'll need to code the autoincrement stuff manually. Without doubt, there will be other subtle differences that will need to be accounted for too.

By all means start a tech discussion thread.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 4 January 2007 01:55 (nineteen years ago)

I say row-level locking isn't a major issue. It is for the admin functions, obviously. So I do want it, or ideally page locking, but I don't think InnoDB supports that. You can't have everything, I guess.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 4 January 2007 01:56 (nineteen years ago)

I don't understand anything in the previous two posts but I just want to say hi and I missed you guys.

tolstoy (tolstoy), Thursday, 4 January 2007 12:00 (nineteen years ago)

Are the Sandbox threads gonna be transferred over here? And do we get the old format for the search engine?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 4 January 2007 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

'apparently not' to the first question (could end up even more confusing). any sandbox threads actually worth a damn in the end?

reverto levidensis (blueski), Thursday, 4 January 2007 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

there were a handful there that were definitely classic.

Fastnbulbous (Fastnbulbous), Friday, 5 January 2007 03:03 (nineteen years ago)

And I'm wondering how ILX likes its new Canadian home.

Binjominia (Brilhante), Friday, 5 January 2007 06:46 (nineteen years ago)

I was hoping ILX would come back all shiny and new with graphics and colors and avatars and membership levels and signature blends and all the things that make message boards great. What would the levels be, anyway?

But there are a kabillion other forums that have that stuff already! I like the barebones approach of ILX.

Also, I'm amazed at how much faster it loads now. Kudos!

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 6 January 2007 16:36 (nineteen years ago)

It will come back looking different. This isn't new ILX. But not with any of the things you describe, though it does look different. I will likely put something in for people to select a style, though.

KeefW (kmw), Saturday, 6 January 2007 18:20 (nineteen years ago)
