Seeing as that the spanky new server's searchbox returned no Vanessa Daou threads, here 't'is. I really, really like 4 songs on Zipless, but I'm wary to try anything else of hers. Is anything else as good as "The Long Tunnel", for instance, on her other CDs?

I got read of my copy of that pretty quickly. Have never been inspired to look further.

Zipless does have a kinda slimy new-age porno soundtrack quality to it, yes.

Believe me I wanted to like it it, but I couldn't take the porno angle seriously enough and at the same time it wasn't funny enough to really be entertaining. But I did buy it partly because the lyrics were all Erica Jong poems, or something like that.

I loved Zipless when it came out, but then I finally admitted to myself the greatness of Sade and never looked back.

is anyone anticipating the new Baaderonixx? (baaderonixx), Saturday, 6 January 2007 10:34 (eighteen years ago)

I think that's the problem, right there. You wanted the porno, not the soundtrack.

Erica Jong is a terrible poet. I'm not gonna argue that one for a second. But her poems make for pretty decent lyrical source fodder, and I think that the good songs on Zipless would still be good were the lyrics changed to consist of news headlines or grocery lists.

I was given Zipless in 1996 or so by a friend who found it too awful to keep. I played it sporadically in the years following, but each time, I told myself that I didn't like it and that I was merely listening to up my irony-novelty quotient. However, here it is, 2007, and I still find myself un-ironically enjoying Zipless, so I figure it's time to come clean -- so to speak.

No, I wanted the porno and some decent music with it.

I quite like it, too, although/because I am not a lyrics person at all. I mean, it's ultimately just another background chillout piece, for the most part, but choose it over many other alternatives disproportionately often.

I think her lyrics are be best ignored generally, which is a lot to ask I suppose but the music more than makes up. Also hello heart-wrenching chord progression in the chorus of "You", off the Make You Love album... finally ID'd & own that song after hearing bits wafting here & there out of radios for the last 7 years.
