http://www.zeropaid.com/news/8175/RIAA+sues+AllofMP3+for+$1.65+trillion :

The RIAA is seeking $150,000 for each of the 11 million songs AllofMP3 allegedly pirated.

Dirty dirty business, this. The site WAS following Russian legislation, but the governments don't want to get into a fight, so now this single scapegoat site is getting shot at.

StanM (StanM), Saturday, 6 January 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

can't ROMS counter-sue the RIAA for failing to recognise their authority thus undermining their credibility as a legitimate entity within existing Russian law?

reverto levidensis (blueski), Saturday, 6 January 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

Russia almost wasn't admitted to the World Trade organisation last Summer because of this (yet another example that big busine$$ even has international politics in its pockets).

StanM (StanM), Saturday, 6 January 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

... so Russia WILL change their laws, there's no other solution. (sickening, but there you go, that's how it works)

But back to the original article vs the second one about allofmp3:

"For ages the RIAA has been claiming in court that the amount of damages it needs from pirates is $750 per song.

This figure is being challenged in the case of UMG v. Lindor where the RIAA is being told that it must come up with a more realistic figure and closer to the actual damages involved based around the wholesale price for a single"

vs.

"The RIAA is seeking $150,000 for each of the 11 million songs AllofMP3 allegedly pirated."

!?

Oh wait - 150,000 / 750 = 200, they're randomly saying that every song has been sold 200 times, is that it?

StanM (StanM), Saturday, 6 January 2007 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

$150,000 x 11,000,000 = 1.65 Trillion Dollars.

Gee whiz.

Zachary Scott (Zach S), Saturday, 6 January 2007 19:05 (eighteen years ago)

Even if they'd stuck with $750 per song, they're still sueing for a little over 8 billion dollars. Damn!

Zachary Scott (Zach S), Saturday, 6 January 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

I hadn't thought this through, but if they're indeed saying it's $750 per infringement and (since this is a shop) they're guessing 200 sales per song, then yeah, it's not illogical to say 150,000 per song.

StanM (StanM), Saturday, 6 January 2007 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

allofmp3 don't have the money the RIAA is asking for.
presumably they will reach an agreement ala Napster.
ROMS will be remodelled as more agreeable RIAA equivalent under IFPA.
allofmp3 may then continue as RIAA/IFPA-approved operation charging more 'appropriate' prices - but this seems unworkable also.
