I don't believe there's been a You Tube thread dedicated to this kind of stuff before, but I remember DJ Martian had some great ideas along these lines awhile back. I think he posted them to a non-You Tube thread, though.

Moving a bit too dangerously into pop territory, but really very "alternative" for where they came from (i.e. here in the USA). Introducing the one hit by the only American New Romantic group to ever go anywhere (even if it was only temporary), "Romanticide" by Combo Audio:

DIRECTED by Midge Ure? What do you mean, he tried his hand at directing? Crazy.
Although I do want to say one thing: that song he did with Mick Karn, what is it? "After A Fashion"? I can't STAND that thing. No offense meant to either of them.

-- and good lord, all of them are really exciting, especially in terms of being reminded how good these guys were in terms of instrumental skill. It's even better if you know these songs well: e.g., above and beyond Dave Gregory's incredible lead on "Scissor Man," Colin and Andy start throwing in vocal and guitar harmonies that aren't on the recorded version. Same goes for D.G.'s lead embellishments on "Helicopter."

Bimble, thought you might get a kick out of the X-Teens. They were early-80s cult heroes in North Carolina. They put out a couple of singles & some albums produced by Don Dixon & Mitch Easter who of course went on to much greater fame producing REM's early work.
― that's not my post, Sunday, 24 May 2009 15:52 (sixteen years ago)
BTW, Don Dixon did some great new wave / power pop as a performer in the early 80s. Search Praying Mantis & Skin Deep. Lots of similarities to Nick Lowe's early 80s work.
