I sampled a few songs off of A JUG OF LOVE, sounded like a vaguely british Dead with more country rok overtones. Not bad. what can anyone tell me about this band?

They used to be the Action. Jug of Love is nice enough but didn't stick with me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 7 January 2007 07:43 (nineteen years ago)

they bored me. which means in a year or two i'll probably download it again and think it's brilliant. but ned's appraisal is pretty much right.

Omnipotent Baby rip-off.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 7 January 2007 12:05 (nineteen years ago)

they were label-mates on the ill-fated Head Records with Harvey Matusow's Jews Harp Band who were classic all the way:

those are the only two albums released on Chess's Head label. so it's easy to be a completist!

i'm curious about that one.

hey, Ned - your AMG review of this record is a lot more positive than your post here would indicate. DO YOU LIE FOR $ AND REVEAL YOUR TRUE FEELINGS HERE??

bobby bedelia (van dover), Sunday, 14 January 2007 07:42 (nineteen years ago)

No, I just react in the moment. HI DERE.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 14 January 2007 08:02 (nineteen years ago)

it does sound a bit thrown together and "non-urgent" or something, but it's a grower and has a very agreeable vibe. sufism and all that spiritual jive. and the extra tracks help.

I've only heard one Mighty Baby record and I don't think it was Jug of Love.
I remember liking it but wishing it was a little better.
I feel like I've heard about epic jammy Mighty Baby covers of like late Coltrane jams.
What's that stuff on?
Love that cover image Scott posted. I don't think that was the album I heard either?
I'm a lot of help.

Long, in depth Mighty Baby history in the new Flashback!Very interesting reading. has me wanting to check out the rest of their material. Already loving the s/t 1st lp and the Action material including Rolled Gold & probably whatever I've heard with them as sidemen.
Habibbiya is also interesting, that's 3 of them a bit later with Susan graubard and hubby from California. She had been with Pat Kilroy on his lp plus the unreleased New Age lp which was finally put out a few years ago.
