I'd go with the first Supercharger album.

dead moon rising (Lee is Free), Monday, 8 January 2007 06:49 (nineteen years ago)

Well I just finished Wearemonster by Isolee so that, but I've heard quite a few great ones over that time.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 January 2007 06:57 (nineteen years ago)

Everything Chavez (via rerelease) (I'm still a naieve kid so I missed the initial releases like everyone else). Initially took "Gone Glimmering" over "Ride the Fader" with "Little 12 Toes" as my favorite song. Played exclusively for three weeks and two days.

mark e (mark e), Monday, 8 January 2007 09:34 (nineteen years ago)

I'll stick my neck out and say that I think both the new Patrick Wolf and LCD Soundsystem albums are great. The new Idlewild is not.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 8 January 2007 09:38 (nineteen years ago)

'King David's Melody' by Augustus Pablo is kicking my ass; just heard it thanks to a recommendation by Kevin Nutt on the FMU blog.

The Goslings - Grandeur Of Hair. Had never heard of them, but picked it up based on a recommendation. Holy Crap, is this thing blowing my mind.

EZ Snappin (EZSnappin), Monday, 8 January 2007 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

Sounds like big beat to me. Number Song could have been on Leftism.

Johnney B English (stigoftdump), Monday, 8 January 2007 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

'grandeur of hair' is mighty...

mister the guanoman (mister the guanoman), Monday, 8 January 2007 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

pulp - different class -- best new-to-me album i've happened upon in probably a good year.

dream torture (blood bitch), Monday, 8 January 2007 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

either Diamonds in the Rough (Ian Person's solo thing) or the first Marble Sheep and the Run-Down Sun's Children. the one on Alchemy.

Ghost Bear Junior High Attendance Party (Ghost Bear Junior High Attenda), Monday, 8 January 2007 14:44 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't been doing that much retrospective first-time listening this year, so probably Rahim AlHaj's When the Soul is Settled.

andrew douglas rothbard, 'abandoned meander'

i am not a nugget (stevie), Monday, 8 January 2007 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

Heard loads of good albums over the last 3 months but I think the one that stands out is Basement 5 - 1965-1980.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Monday, 8 January 2007 15:14 (nineteen years ago)

Ned Ragget's comment about having "finished" the Isolee album just blows my mind. Like you finish a novel or a bacon sandwich. See, I don't figure that I've got the hang of any half-decent album till I've got 10-20 spins under my belt.

The difference, I suppose, between professional and amateur music listeners...

Best album I've heard for the first time in the last 90 days = John Spence Blues Explosion "Reverse Willie Horton". JSBX are, for the most part, an astounding live band who make shitty records. This thing, however, rules balls.

Also worthwhile: Christine Onna 23 "Acid Eater", Sand "The Dalston Shroud" (not sure about that one yet), Jay Reatard "Blood Visions", Jack Rose "Raag Manifestos", Black Flag "Damaged" demos, Honeymoon Killers 1st LP, King Khan & BBQ.

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Monday, 8 January 2007 15:33 (nineteen years ago)

Pharoah Sanders - Karma

The Goslings - Grandeur Of Hair. Had never heard of them, but picked it up based on a recommendation. Holy Crap, is this thing blowing my mind.

Yeah, I need to get that -- I've heard the rerelease of the earlier EPs and was v. impressed.

Ned Ragget's comment about having "finished" the Isolee album just blows my mind.

Well, quite literally, I was listening to the final track as I was typing that!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 January 2007 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

Number Song could have been on Leftism

u really think?! i can't imagine that at all. Leftfield didn't do 'turntablism'. 'Number Song' is the only real Big Beatish thing on 'Endtroducing' in any case.

reverto levidensis (blueski), Monday, 8 January 2007 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

tom west (thomp), Monday, 8 January 2007 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I need to get that -- I've heard the rerelease of the earlier EPs and was v. impressed.

Just an FYI - the EP collection is good, but doesn't quite prepare you for the head-cleaning effect of Grandeur Of Hair. The closest thing I can compare it to is MBV doing fifteen minutes of "You Made Me Realise" live - my spine hurt afterwords, and my nerves were all frayed and over-sensitive. The Goslings played at a good, proper listening volume did that for me, but it lasted an hour.

After the first listen I couldn't stop smiling and was happily empty of thoughts. Repeated listens have allowed more nuance to appear, but it is still a spine-tingling experience.

EZ Snappin (EZSnappin), Monday, 8 January 2007 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

The closest thing I can compare it to is MBV doing fifteen minutes of "You Made Me Realise" live

Ah, see, having been lucky enough to experience that twice...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 January 2007 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

I only had that single experience, but it sort of stays with you, doesn't it?

It is nice to find someone aiming for that sort of thing now and again.

Chico Hamilton - The Dealer
I've picked up a couple fo Chico Hamilton records after getting into Gabor Szabo earlier last year. This one features Larry Coryell on guitar and is really good.

Jefferson Airplane - Bless Its Pointed Little Head
I've been getting into some of the SF rock and late 60s bands in the last six months. This is an interesting record. Jorma really plays some excellent electric guitar on this one.

Pat Martino - Exit & Conciousness
I've picked up quite a few Pat Martino albums in the past year. His music is quite good. Desperado is also excellent.

Fleetwood Mac - Boston Blues
These live recordings of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac from Boston have come out a few different ways. This is a two CD set and there is some really inspired playing on parts. Danny Kirwan really gives Green a run for his money in parts. Some of the jams remind me a bit of Television live on the Roir live collection The Blow Up.

Grateful Dead - Fillmore West 1969
This is probably the best one, I've got Live Dead, but I think this one is even better. The last two discs when they cut loose are really good.

I also got the new Isis and Mastodon records in the last three months, but really neither one has caught with me like their earlier records. I've listened to them a couple of times and put them in the shelf.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 00:26 (nineteen years ago)

(if that doesn't count, what with it not actually being out yet, then ... easy, "your majesty ... we are here" by earl brutus.)

Chico Hamilton - The Dealer
I've picked up a couple fo Chico Hamilton records after getting into Gabor Szabo earlier last year. This one features Larry Coryell on guitar and is really good.

Yes! I love that record. "Man from Two Worlds" is great also if you don't have it, and pretty much all the quintet recordings from that era are good. He had great taste in guitarists - Szabo, Hall, Coryell etc.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 01:32 (nineteen years ago)

Joanna Newsom - Ys.

GLC (ZakAce), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 02:26 (nineteen years ago)

patton oswalt - "222" . oh man, (chuckles), oh gosh...

musicwise, I'd say DJ Rogers - It's Good to Be Alive or the Ricardo Villalobos EP everybody hates now. Being a techno noob has its privileges(being blown away by almost everything you hear is one)

tremendoid (tremendoid), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 02:43 (nineteen years ago)

grizzly bear - yellow house

probably my favourite of the year

dave f (dave f), Thursday, 11 January 2007 00:23 (nineteen years ago)

I've been grooving to Mammatus' self-titled release the last few days. Real heavy wah-wah psychedelic stoner jams - touch of Syd-era Floyd, Hawkwind, Sabbath in a delicious stew.

Haven't heard much about it hereabouts - I'm guessing the fact it doesn't quite hit the typical Metal nor Psychedelic touchstones but sits between the two makes it easy to miss/dismiss. Has a great cover too.

EZ Snappin (EZSnappin), Thursday, 11 January 2007 01:03 (nineteen years ago)

pete townshend - who came first

M. V. (M.V.), Thursday, 11 January 2007 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

I've been infatuated with Eddie Grant's Walking On Sunshine since early December. Dunno if I'll feel the same way come summer but who cares?

And (20+ years after my old 8-track tape copy self-destructed) I've rediscovered the greatness of Poppy Seeds, the second Poppy Family LP. [Soul- ]seek and ye shall find.

Been listening to The Goslings' Between The Dead and Grandeur of Hair. Incredible, addicting stuff. I love the extreme fuzz. I think this band was made for me.

Ghost - Hypnotic Underworld

EZ Snappin (EZSnappin), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

John Phillips - John, the Wolf King of LA. Consequently it's one of my favorite albums ever now (w/ the bonus tracks). I feel like I was missing out for all those years.

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

KMD - Mr. Hood
They were all over 3rd Bass's debut but their own debut was really hard to find in my neck of the woods. Forgot about them until seeing this on some blog, and man, it's like a missing Prince Paul album when he was still doing poppy 3 Ft High And Rising stuff.

I've actually been flipping between this and Little Brother's Minstrel Show and for the life of me, I can't understand how LB are being touted as New native tongue.

Viz (Viz), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

Aretha Franklin's Spirit in the Dark.

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
i just downloaded the boredoms "pop tatari" this morning, because i just discovered that it's on emusic. been meaning to hear them for years, and even had a burned copy of an album a while back that somehow never actually made it home with me.

anyway, yeah, it's nice to know that i can hear something like this and still have my fucking mind blown. holy shit.

"Idea" by Bee Gees. Was familiar with the two other albums in the remaster series, but not this one (other than the singles, that is). Fabolous stuff, like so much from that same era.

He was over my way at Christmas and is busy recording and fending off offers from labels. Reckons he's got another couple of Scull Disco singles coming out in March (a doublepack?) but most of the newer stuff is going on the album...which is great!
