1990s (New Scottish ex-Yummy Fur and V-Twin band on Rough Trade)... yes, yes.

I have seen these guys live twice in the last couple of months, and they are incredibly fun - sort of a more bar-band Modern Lovers, almost. Big hooks, simple but catchy riffs, fun lyrics. The singer/guitar player was the frontman of the Yummy Fur, who I always thought were quite underrated - but they don't sound anything like the Yummy Fur. Anyone else heard them/like them/have any thoughts?
I haven't been listening to much rock music of late, but these guys have stood out to me as being very, very fun.

This is the single:

That's unfortunate!

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Yummy Fur, but this is just a whole nother enchilada.

I've seen the 1990s a few times as they played with my girlfriend's band and found them very clunky and unexciting, their good-time-party-music pose fucked up by the fact that they ain't no fun. The singles disappoint too.

They are not fit to lick The Yummy Fur's boots--did the junk kill John's gtr and lyric skillz or what? A huge disappointment. Better than V-Twin but that's not saying very much.

First single is on their Myspace page for a taste: http://www.myspace.com/1990sband

(I swear to god I am not a street-teamer, I have just been loving the singles)

Have only heard one of their songs which tended to be on some local radio show when I got back from work and had a shower. Really disliked it, intensely. The song itself wasn't too bad but a lyric in the chorus was such a clunky and horrible non-sequitur that I couldn't bare to listen to it ever again (I may have misheard but it seemed to be "FTQ, FTP, properties in Mozambique", just typing it has made a little bit of vomit come up in the back of my mouth).

OTM OTM OTM.

The recorded version of "You're Supposed to be my Friend" is good, though.

Yeah, as a huge Yummy Fur fan I was all geared up to see them at ATP, but so disappointed. It's not that they're all that bad, they're just very unexciting.

(Essentially = Raw Patrick OTM)

I know their drummer. He's a very nice chap. I used to like the Yummy Fur, but I seem to never have knowingly heard the 1990s. You aren't all convincing me to change my mind.

*heads off over to myspace anyway*

six months pass...

i got this album today on a whim, based on enjoying "you were supposed to be my friend." i'm liking the goofy t. rex via modern lovers crossed with franz ferdinand vibe. am i the only one, aside from tiki? perhaps they are boring live.

Emily Bjurnhjam, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 00:59 (eighteen years ago)

oh yeah, and the album is called "cookies."

Emily Bjurnhjam, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 01:00 (eighteen years ago)

hstencil, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 01:06 (eighteen years ago)

I like 1990s

RJG, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 01:13 (eighteen years ago)

man, i think every single song on this album is about drugs.

Emily Bjurnhjam, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 01:15 (eighteen years ago)

yeah?

RJG, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 01:16 (eighteen years ago)

heh, not that i care, i just found it funny that i caught five different songs explicitly referring to doing a lot of drugs.

Emily Bjurnhjam, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 02:15 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

Just got the new one. On one of the tunes the guy sings something like "9 is my sign / yours is 11 / crash your plane into my building."
what

Shannon Whirry & the Bad Brains, Friday, 6 February 2009 18:10 (sixteen years ago)

lyrics were certainly never this band's strong-point.

tho i don't kno if they have a strong-point.
