She received a nice write-up in the new Mojo, sounds a little like Dusty Springfield. Anyone heard the record? Seen her live?

Her voice has no soul or 'oomph' to it.

Thank you. Maybe a little more Holly Golightly than Dusty. I love the production.

four months pass...
Album gets rave I ALEXIS review.

I hope she's better than Amy Wacky Warehouse.

After all, its sound is almost wilfully unfashionable, poking around in some long-undisturbed corners of pop history

Has he not been paying attention to British indie for the past couple of years? Or at least heard Lucky Soul's album, seeing as it was only out a month ago...

But is the album actually any good?

And what does it say about the state of British radio that this is the third album about which I have had to ask this question this week? Why isn't anybody playing this stuff or am I just listening to the wrong radio stations where it's always going to be 1975 no matter what?

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 18 May 2007 08:25 (eighteen years ago)

i kept meaning to listen to this! but then i moved house and it got lost in one of the boxes.

i'm actually UNABLE to listen to radio now, i'm not in a house with a digital radio any more and i have no idea how to tune mine

lex pretend, Friday, 18 May 2007 08:29 (eighteen years ago)

Is digital radio any better though? From what I can gather 6Music is just old people playing the Clash and there's already Radio 2 for that.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 18 May 2007 08:37 (eighteen years ago)

i never really listened to that either tbh, it was my ex-flatmate's and she only listened to radio 4. i sometimes tuned into 1xtra but all radio djs annoy me

lex pretend, Friday, 18 May 2007 08:41 (eighteen years ago)

Radio 1 bangs on about In New Music We Trust but the only "new" music they seem to trust is crap indie or welcome-to-1998 banging trance.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 18 May 2007 08:59 (eighteen years ago)

6 Music can be okay for playing new music. It was better when Tom Robinson was on every evening as he plays a decent amount of new stuff. Mark Riley shares the weekdays after 7 with him now and for some reason I don't like him as much or at least not the records he plays..."crap indie" might be appropriate.

I've listened a little to Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie who are doing a similar time slot during the week on Radio 2 and play some new stuff. Mind you they had Johnny Boy as their record of the week and they had CSS as guests on Monday, both of which I was listening to well back in last year. So they're at the forefront of new re-releases. I'm sure they've played Candy Payne as well. Old people playing the Clash however does appear to suit these two as well. I like them though.

Listened to Radio 1 for about 10 minutes yesterday evening and had to switch off. An inane trailer for Moyles didn't help.

cheasyweasel, Friday, 18 May 2007 10:30 (eighteen years ago)

At the moment Radcliffe and Maconie sound as though they're about two minutes away from shooting each other.

Haven't knowingly heard Candie Payne anywhere.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 18 May 2007 10:36 (eighteen years ago)

There does seem to be a weird dynamic, it's seems like it's more Radcliffe with Maconie as his sidekick than the other way around or an equal partnership.

Candy Payne was on with Jools Holland last Friday. YouTube, should you have access, will have her vids and also has the Later performances.

cheasyweasel, Friday, 18 May 2007 10:54 (eighteen years ago)

OK, I'll look her up on YouTube.

I stopped watching Later some time ago on medical grounds (blood pressure control).

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 18 May 2007 12:06 (eighteen years ago)

Not very good

Tom D., Friday, 18 May 2007 12:28 (eighteen years ago)

quite bad. accurate review in the independent today.

titchyschneiderMk2, Friday, 18 May 2007 12:31 (eighteen years ago)

Ah, Noonday Underground, that explains it...

I thought it might be a good excuse to go to the legendary 100 Club for the first and possibly only time, where she and her groop are due to perform one day soon.

PJ Miller, Friday, 18 May 2007 12:59 (eighteen years ago)

Quite liking the current single but the other song she did on Later wasn't much cop.

cheasyweasel, Friday, 18 May 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

her b-sides rule. she does a wondrous version of 'nightclubbing' and one of the gloomiest takes on 'gloomy sunday' i've ever heard. the current a side is quite good but not so much that i really want to hear the album.

stirmonster, Friday, 18 May 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

wonderful stuff, am enjoying it all tremendously.... nightclubbing cover version apart.

I quite fancy going to the 100 club, may be slightly jaded after the Athens match tho.
