youtube: actually good videos for recent or current dance tracks

can't remember the last time i saw an interesting* or unusual video for a good dance track

it seems that the video is no longer a concern for most dance artists/producers/DJs these days whereas it was common ten years ago. i guess i mean non-pop stuff here.

*NOT just the formulaic girls in bra and pants routine, tho could still be dancing-based (e.g. Futureshock's 'Late At Night')

please link to any from the last 6 months (and any future ones) here.

i didn't really like the Justice one. i kinda miss the days of high-concept-free (dance) music vids. bring back stock footage and weird shapes etc.

There's a few videos to various songs off the latest Junior Boys album on YouTube. I think most are fan made, though. One involves clips from Fritz Lang's "M", another syncs "In the Morning" with the dance scene from "A Bande Apart", and another illustrates the Alex Smoke remix of that song with someone getting ready IN THE MORNING. WOW.

Many of the more popular dance artists have put out music videos in recent years (Vitalic, Tiga, Ellen Allien, Dominik Eulberg, Laurent Garnier). Can't say that any of them are particularly great, but then again, I can't remember the last time I saw a good new music video by any artist period.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 17:49 (nineteen years ago)

I've seen the Cristian Vogel one on 120 minutes (and Richie Hawtin quite often) the question I keep asking myself is why doesn't MTV Dahnce have a similar spot for "underground" tunes in the same way?

The answer I suppose being either the dearth of material available, or their inability to get their heads round the idea of their audience wanting anything BUT house, tit's & ass 24hrs, 7 days a week.

Would everyone agree by the way that the specialist 'dance' channels are now easily the most unadventurous, uncreative and commercial of the entire tv spectrum?

Bodyrox feat. Luciano Pavarotti (fandango), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 17:50 (nineteen years ago)

you think the Cristian Vogel video is "wank fodder"? I mean, sure the dancer is hot but I really like the choreography/graphics synchronisation in it... good job I didn't post that Moloko vid (Forever More) then!

The first one was kind of a har-har I admit.

three months pass...
not necessarily a GOOD video (actually it's a bit disturbing) but here's Ultra Nate's 'Automatic' anyway. relatively novel take on the Pointer Sisters classic - like the big Euro synth sound of the chorus at least.

blueski, Monday, 30 April 2007 23:41 (eighteen years ago)

If there is anyone who is using youtube correctly, it is Rich Hawtin. The short films he did to promote Minus are absolutely brilliant. I am not into anything they are doing on a musical level, but I really respect the thought that was put into branding and promoting Minus.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CA1HLtPE3Q
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWEhu2c2ilo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Qqf-nusT3w

I respect it because they completely grasp the strengths of video in 2006 and used it to their advantage. The rest of this stuff just seems like it is a hold over from era when MTV actually played videos. It is garbage because it has to be, that kind of traditional video promotion doesn't work well anymore and it is forced to appeal to the lowest common denominator. The less effective mass promo works, the lower you have to go.

All the previous videos make me feel like I am living in Ideocracy.

Seems harsh - what about just the basic entertainment aspect of complimenting the tracks with visuals which could be an interesting animation, barrage of effects, story or stream of references that might enable the viewer to understand the ideas behind the track as envisaged by the artist and/or director? The whole thing has plateaued in recent years (many videos have swung back to being performance pieces in the process) tho I think.

Here's a vid for The Black Dog's 'Sudden Intake (Orlando Voorn mix) - but just CGI candy really that could've been put with countless similar tracks. So you could argue that a track like this doesn't need or benefit in any real way from having a video altho at least in this case it allows people to actually hear the track in full easily in a public domain like youtube. that for me is a good enough reason to keep making even quite basic videos for dance tracks and it's what i've been experimenting in myself recently.

blueski, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 10:09 (eighteen years ago)

ugh m_nus branding ugh. how the hell can a typical company promo thrown up on youtube be brilliant?

if other videos are life as idiocracy, then i'll just be reminded that "there are plenty of 'tards out there living really kick ass lives"

BleepBot, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

It is brilliant because it actually showcases personalities and puts faces on the names. It didn't cost much, it made them look pretty cool, and they are doing damn well for not being completely commercial. Like I said, I am no fanboy, but I will give them credit for a well executed idea.

if other videos are life as idiocracy, then i'll just be reminded that "there are plenty of 'tards cokeheads out there living really kick ass lives"

I guess the problem I have with these videos is that I don't feel like they are adding any narrative or non-narrative visual barrage that makes the music more appealing. Watching these videos is like reading ilm posts without paragraph breaks in all caps. It seems like they are trying to use every trick in the book to make things weird/trippy/druggy/glossy when that isn't the thing to do anymore.

In hindsight I shouldn't have condemed that vogel video or the whiteboard one. The hot chicks+trippy visuals/coke gloss videos are the ones that really get my goat. They smack of everything about commerical dance music that bothers me.

it made them look pretty cool

These promos really put me off m_nus actually, they come across at incredibly cliquey, smug cunts with almost zero personality.

Perhaps these videos are meant to be taken as a pastiche on corporate culture and it's going over me head? The (hopefully) forced laughter after Magda's 'joke' (something like "always rolling never rocking"?) in one of the videos I remember seeing would support this idea... but I doubt it.

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 15:48 (eighteen years ago)

sounds about right

lfam, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

I agree, but there are plenty of people out there who are eating this shit up. Again, I am not a fan, but I think this is the way to be using video for dance music promotion.

What it really reminds me of is Warhol in the 70's with the "kids" from Interview magazine. Hawtin is kinda old, deaf and washed up, but he has a bunch of attractive young people around him to demonstrate that he is still with it.

Display Name, Thursday, 3 May 2007 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

I think it's an interesting idea.

I enjoyed watching the m_nus videos for adding a lot of context to a label that still seems to be courting anonymity and facelessness. It's kind of paradoxical. Certain ideas from an earlier era of techno, still living on, but as gloss or just style.

That said, the videos could have been worked over a bit. They do come across as a bit... well... cliquey and smug. But there's also elements of excitement, the live footage is great, the sense of friendly competition, etc.

Richie is the least interesting thing about these videos, except him talking about the difference in touring. It might be true that people from the old days were horrible (I can imagine), but look at the set-up now! Wasn't there talk of techno struggling like the rest of the music industry?
