my computer speakers, shitty though they be, still managed to squeak through enough of this to trigger flashbacks to the ex's swing through town last month. joyful stuff.

What album is the song "Waiting" on? (It's the one they posted a video for.)

Harpal (harpal), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 05:47 (nineteen years ago)

Did anyone catch the Ethiopian singer/Bennink duo that the dj played (I think) right before the live set? What was the name of that singer?

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 05:57 (nineteen years ago)

Never mind - fmu sez "Mohammed Jimmy Mohammed"

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 06:23 (nineteen years ago)

Mohammed Jimmy Mohammed performed with the Ex in Ethiopia I believe. He recently passed away. DJ Rupture/Jace has more about the Ex and Ethiopia on his blog Mudd Up that recently changed its url address.

That Ethiopia tour sounds amazing - I would love to have seen one of those shows.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 14:32 (nineteen years ago)

Pretty much everything on the Terp label is great. It's just one of those labels I trust whatever is released on it will be especially worth tracking down. Check out the Tseyatu Beraki album especially. Bennink played on a couple tracks on that one, too.

I still have yet to hear Getachew Makyura with the Ex -- Getachew's record from the Ethiopiques series is my favorite one.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

According to what they said in the FMU interview, it's pretty unusual for foreign bands to play Ethiopia, and the Ethiopian government told them to just show up in each town and ask for a permit to play. They would ride around the town in a bus announcing the previously unpromoted show over a loudspeaker.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, they mentioned that on the show - I think they said it was last week.

Here's Jace/DJ Rupture's blog. He just toured the US with the Ex. Several of his postings if you work your way on down talk about the Ex and I think he linked to that blog just posted above.
