sonned by a dusty son record

passiflora incarnata (get bent), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 02:08 (eighteen years ago)

The only son song I have is a pro-Castro son by the Chilean folk-singer Victor Jara with the quite witty lyric,

Si quieres tomar ron pero sin Coca Cola,
A Cuba, a Cuba, a Cuba iré.

i could listen to that but i'd probably get shot by CANF.

can i ask what you're talking about? the british hip-hop label that put out Def Tex?

the table is the table (treesessplode), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 21:01 (eighteen years ago)

Miami mafia organisation.

jimn (jimnaseum), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

SON? like SOM, but about coke and guns rather than Gordon Bunshaft?

Ah right, facetiousness.

I think you're just going to have to wait til R_S notices this thread lfam.

I thought it was a record label when I first read the title. The truth is, I know hardly anything about pure son. All I can say is that I've liked a lot of what I've heard by Arsenio Rodriguez, but I need to get around to getting a compilation of his work myself. You could try rec.music.afro-latin. It's sort of a dead group, but a lot of the old-timers still monitor it and suddenly re-appear out of the blue when a question interests them. Or you could try Yahoo's Cuban music group. Or you could just search the archives in either place. Or you could browse this site (but of course, they want to sell CDs, so you can't really trust the reviews--although you can probably trust their judgments about old classics more than newer material): http://www.descarga.com/cgi-bin/db/17476.10?xEgJuPKG;;297

(Also a lot of the reviews of the classics are by people who are themselves well-known Latin musicians.)

R_S (RSLaRue), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 23:44 (eighteen years ago)

This is a new Arsenio Rodriguez compilation I was thinking of buying (though I'm sad it doesn't include "Fuego en el 23," which the Puerto Rican salsa band Sonora Poncena made famous again in the 70s).

(I'm really not kidding when I say I don't know that much about Cuban music, or any Afro-Latin genres from before the mid-60s.)

This is the Cuban Music group I meant, incidentally, but it looks like you would have to join to browse messages:

(I'm a member but don't post much.)

that sounds like some fine music, leo. i like the "son" disambiguation page a lot, too.

the table is the table (treesessplode), Thursday, 11 January 2007 02:33 (eighteen years ago)

Why the sudden, if it is sudden, interest in son in particular, anyway?

R_S (RSLaRue), Thursday, 11 January 2007 04:38 (eighteen years ago)

1) miami
2) DA RHYTHM DA RHYTHM

i am just hypothesizing, tho.

I don't read ILE nearly enough to have any idea what's going on over there.

R_S (RSLaRue), Thursday, 11 January 2007 04:47 (eighteen years ago)

the table is the table (treesessplode), Thursday, 11 January 2007 05:42 (eighteen years ago)

i made this thread because i have always been interested in the musics that came out of son and then jody made a joke about it and i figured i should ask.

friday on the porch (lfam), Thursday, 11 January 2007 07:48 (eighteen years ago)

boyant (Boyant), Thursday, 11 January 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

friday on the porch (lfam), Thursday, 11 January 2007 19:02 (eighteen years ago)

no i didn't, i have no sense of humor

Canambu is not dusty but sounds like it could have come from an earlier era; any suggestions along those lines would be great.
