HELP: Nina Nastasia "Dogs" CD

Hello,

I've seen some mention of Nina Nastasia on this site before, so I'm hoping someone on here may be able to help me out.

I am desperately seeking a copy of her debut CD "Dogs" on Socialist Records. Does anyone know where a copy could be found? I'm willing to pay a finder's fee if anyone can dig one up. Unfortunately I'm stranded in Virginia, and no local stores carry it.

Again, any help in this matter will be rewarded.

Thanks, Andrew

Andrew, I found my copy via Other Music. (It was in-store, though.)

FYI, her new record is out (!!!), according to this. You ATP folks in the UK should be seeing her there. You really should.

"Dogs" is due to be reissued in June of this year. I spent many many hours looking for it last week and failed completely. "The Blackened Air" comes out on Tuesday and is super great. You probably already have it. (hi andy, remember me?)

three weeks pass...
I have also looked for it. Other Music didn't have it in stock. I live in NYC and gotta start combing the stores. If I find 2 I'll get one for you. Blackened Air is really good. I saw her play 2 Valentine's Days ago at Knitting Factory NYC, and Albini et al. did a great job recreating her live sound on CD.

Hi guys...I bought 'Dogs' on a whim at a record store here in dallas, because i thought the packaging was awesome...I've been addicted ever since. Her new one is fabulous as well! There are a lot more country sounds, imho..which i adore! im hoping eventually she'll make it out to my neck of the woods... x Tiffanie

I read Dogs is to be reissued in June, does anyone have more detail on this?

Blackened Air = album of the year.

And apparently she's just finished recording her third one too... smashin'.

June is ticking by... any info on the reissue? If anyone finds a stockist then buy at least 20 copies. i shall find homes for them ;)

i've been searching in vain for 'dogs' too. i even emailed john peel (bbc radio 1 dj) who confirmed that it's being re-released before the end of the year. i saw her at all tomorrow's parties and recorded the set so if anyone fancies a trade for a copy of dogs let me know ;-)

June 7th sees the re-release of the rare album ‘Dogs’ by New Yoiker Nina Nastasia.
‘Dogs’, previously unavailable in the UK, was engineered by Steve Albini and has been described as hypnotic, luscious and timeless - which is generally the best way to describe Nastasia herself.

The release follows a UK tour, which includes a set at All Tomorrow’s Parties on April 2nd.

Nastasia and her regular band members will be joined by Kaigol-Ool Khovalyg and Sayan Bapa, the two founding members of the legendary Tuvan band Huun Huur Tu. They will be playing the igil (a Tuvan horse-hair instrument).

Catch her UK live shows at the following venues:

April 2004
2nd Camber Sands All Tomorrow’s Parties (as a trio with viola and accordion)

June 2004 (with full band as with all following dates)
Mon 14th Leeds City Varieties
Tue 15th Glasgow The Arches
Wed 16th Liverpool Academy 2
Thur 17th Bristol St George’s
Fri 18th Leicester Phoenix Arts
Sat 19th Coventry Warwich Arts Centre
Mon 21st London Queen Elizabeth Hall
Tue 22nd Brighton Concorde 2

I'd better sell my copy now!

i'm pretty sure this is my favorite of hers. i didn't track down a copy until i got on soulseek at the end of last year, so it's the last one i heard, which might play into that. look like the reissue is on touch & go as well.

A new album entitled "Mine the Bird", has recently been completed and is scheduled for a winter 2009 release.[3] Titles include: "It's A World Of Dirt I Know," "Memories Of Angela Vine," "You Might Always Feel Alone," "How I Like A Fight," "I Can't Mend This," and "Take Your Time."[4]

As well as a new studio album, Nina has announced plans to release a live album in the coming future. Accompanied by string players, Nina will perform two dates at the Hideout in Chicago on the 26th and 27th of July 2009 which will be both filmed and recorded. It is currently unknown whether the shows will be filmed for a DVD.

Dogs on Socialist for a dollar is an incredible bargain! Anyone know how much it goes for? I've never seen a copy on eBay.

Officer Pupp, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 20:53 (sixteen years ago)

I was actually looking it up just to find out, but I haven't seen that version on ebay or anything yet.

Evan, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 21:51 (sixteen years ago)

It was in the dollar bin at my local record store, its not like I found it on Amazon or anything either.

Evan, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 21:54 (sixteen years ago)

thread revive reminded me that i never downloaded dogs from emusic. remedying that now. i was just listening to on leaving and you follow me a few days ago. i have a hard time explaining to people what distinguishes her from other folky-girls-with-guitars, but i really dig her thing, whatever it is.

flying squid attack (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 2 September 2009 22:28 (sixteen years ago)

You Follow Me is the next one I want to get.

Evan, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

I've tried to like her, I really have, but it just doesn't work for me. The main problem is that most of her songs are just too short. They sound provisional, as though something more exciting is just round the corner, but it never arrives. Plus, I saw her live last year and it was a shockingly throwaway, indifferent performance.

anagram, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 23:09 (sixteen years ago)

Somehow Run to Ruin is the only one of her records I've really found compelling.

the kid is crying because did sharks died? (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 2 September 2009 23:49 (sixteen years ago)

I haven't gotten that feeling with her anagram, but I know what you're talking about as applied to other bands (I can't think of specifics right now).

Evan, Thursday, 3 September 2009 00:12 (sixteen years ago)

The part of 'Run All You...' from The Blackened Air when the band comes in gives me the chills every time, just wish it went on for longer.

MaresNest, Thursday, 3 September 2009 00:23 (sixteen years ago)

her concision is part of what i like about her. the songs are like glimpses. she also has i think a real instinct for melody. there are tunes. so many art-folky types sort of neglect that end of things. and i just really love her voice. it's not big or showy, but it's got depth.

flying squid attack (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 3 September 2009 00:57 (sixteen years ago)

For me, The Blackened Air is her finest album; so many great songs, and the production is just stunning.
Everything beyond that has been diminishing returns, although all of her albums have some amazing moments in them.

My copy of Dogs on Socialist cost me about £20, secondhand from an ex WFMU dj, probably about the time this thread started. I don't think I've ever come across another copy for sale, so I'm really curious if it's worth anything since the reissue (the Socialist packaging is much nicer.)

Evan, if you want to double your money, I'll give you two bucks for it!

Officer Pupp, Thursday, 3 September 2009 12:04 (sixteen years ago)

What an offer!

Evan, Thursday, 3 September 2009 14:22 (sixteen years ago)

four years pass...

I still have the original that I found for a dollar in 2009.
Was curious...
