Shakira: does she have a loyal backing band?

I just imagine that she does, a bunch of South American guys who've been with her since she her parents were kidnapped by cocaine magnates, ignoring her terrible lyrics, telling her it's a good idea to say that her breasts are small and humble so you don't confuse them with mountains, defending her to the death in duels, playing subtle pan pipe variations, not seeking to do solos and dominate the songs and steal her limelight, which she so deserves because she was orphaned and raised by the men in the band who look on her as their sister. So, what do you think of Shakira?

Oh boy, that was a great introduction to this question. Obviously Shakira holds little interest to anyone - I guess she shouldn't.

"thereover, hereunder" aaaAAAhhh what can one say, maybe the boys have overindulged their little foundling?

English isn't her first language, is it? C'mon, be nice.

Her dancing is incredibly bad. The 'Whenever, Wherever' video makes me laugh even with the sound off, just for the bits in the mountains / surrounded by elephants / whatever where she sort of flings her arms in the air like she's doing some strange form of aerobics.

Is there nothing more important to say about Shakira than this? Is she only popular in New Zealand? Does no-one else watch the chart shows?

we have done 900 shakira threads from every angle.

(i almost typed that as we have done shakira from every angle. then i thought better of it.)

jess, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(i wanna do shakira from every angle. so there.)

maryann you've just identified another creative archetype!! Sade is all over this category too, btw.

oh yeah, i only got a computer three days ago. so i didn't know you talked about nothing but Shakira until just before i started coming here again. well, i feel relieved.

maryann, Sunday, 7 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

by the way, thanks jess, it's very kind when someone tells you that you're that there's another thread.

maryann, Sunday, 7 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

maryann, sorry. i didn't mean to derail yr thread. if i wasn't drunk and cranky, i'd look for the other shakira threads, but they're there, i swear.

the more and more i see shakira, the more i'm struck by something nancy (who likes her...at least from a silly playfully-objectifying stance) said: there have got to be dozens of latin pop stars who can actually sing, who are beautiful, who -don't- write their own songs, who are desperate for crossover success...why was -she- picked as "the one"? i think yr idea of shakira having that intimate backing is probably better and more romantic (in the "plane crash in the andes" sense) than the actual truth which is probably a bunch of fat white guys from l.a. with ponytails who own a lot of jazz records and who couldn't catch a break throughout the "grunge 90s."

the life of a session musician must be a really depressing/interesting/frustrating thing.

four weeks pass...
her 'whenever, wherever' video is great. i don't understand why people see the lyrics "Lucky my breasts are small and humble, so you don't confuse them with mountains" as being lame or whatever. i think they're beautiful honest words when you hear them with the right perspective. in this song Shakira is basically saying 'thank you' and being grateful for what she has even though it may not be perfection and things could be easier. thank you for what i've experienced because it has made me who i am. it's a song that lifts you up.. i like it and i like Shakira.

So, what do you think of Shakira?

Whenever, Wherever is a perfectly enjoyable song, and I like it quite a bit. Other than that, not much- but c'mon people, what sort of assholes complain about lyrics in songs like these?

John Dahlem, Monday, 6 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I want to be Shakira's leather pants. Oh yes.

turner, Monday, 6 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

five years pass...

Whaddaya mean, "songs like these"?

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Sunday, 7 October 2007 04:15 (eighteen years ago)

As opposed to songs like those.
