J. Grizzle (trainsmoke), Thursday, 11 January 2007 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

He posted this in one of his newsletters or somewhere a little while back; apparently her producer is a big Watt fan and invited him to join in. So why not? She thought the 'the punk guy' had some good ideas, I gather.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 January 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

also not as wtf as mike watt in that good charlotte video!

i hadn't heard about that..(can i be blamed for giving the TV the old Elvis Presley when GC pops on?)

did Watt really appear with them?

J. Grizzle (trainsmoke), Thursday, 11 January 2007 20:50 (eighteen years ago)

I hope she does some free-jazz-boho-rapping

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 11 January 2007 20:50 (eighteen years ago)

I think it's wonderful and that they're both cute as buttons.

Except, you know, they could both maybe consider some kinda tooth-whitening regimen.

David Kahne (or maybe Kanhe - something like that)

Anyway, he's an old LA punk funk hand, produced several of Fishbone's lps, etc.

Candy: tastes like chicken, if chicken was a candy. (Austin, Still), Friday, 12 January 2007 01:37 (eighteen years ago)

Watt used to rep for Madonna as far back as Minutemen days, so this isn't exactly a shock.

A Radio Picture (Rrrickey), Friday, 12 January 2007 02:16 (eighteen years ago)

Has Mike Watt started aging backwards or something?

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Friday, 12 January 2007 02:28 (eighteen years ago)

he;s great at straight 'session' playing. see the stooges and porno for pyros. the real tragedy here is the lack of george hurley. dud needs to be justin timberlake's drummer NOW.

chaki (chaki), Friday, 12 January 2007 10:07 (eighteen years ago)

who is mike watt?

lex pretend (lex pretend), Friday, 12 January 2007 10:10 (eighteen years ago)

he's this crazy bass player from pedro... you know? where the docks are to go like to catalina n shit? when you drive down the 110 and see all those oil shits and the ocean? that's where he's from. anyway, dude plays a mean bass and get this.. the guy fucking talks in his own language. it's crazy. you gotta get into watt.

chaki (chaki), Friday, 12 January 2007 10:13 (eighteen years ago)

WILL Lex confront a new aesthetic and realize it is not there to hurt him? WILL Chaki succeed where others have failed? Tune in tomorrow for Days of Our Threads.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 January 2007 13:51 (eighteen years ago)

i am not afraid of a new aesthetic! i asked who this person was and chaki told me, which ideally is how it should always have been. thanks chaki. who has he played bass for who i might have heard?

Punk Veteran's 'Idol' Moment

"Speaking of pop starlets, Kelly Clarkson's new material could have a little punk-rock flavor. For her upcoming album, the "American Idol" champ collaborated with bassist Mike Watt, who co-founded legendary '80s punk band the Minutemen and is currently backing up Iggy Pop in the reunited Stooges.

"I ended up playing on six of the songs. I had no idea what it was going to be like, but it ended up being pretty interesting," Watt said of the recording sessions. And just how familiar is Watt with Clarkson's oeuvre?
"I heard that Kelly won some game show," he told Billboard last week. Er, that's one way to put it. I was really impressed how she sang her a-s off," Watt added. "It was intense. I'm really glad I had the experience -- it was trippy and everyone gave me much respect."

Clarkson's album is being produced by David Kahne , who has worked with the likes of Paul McCartney, Tony Bennett and Stevie Nicks.
Watt also found a fan in Clarkson collaborator Jimmy Messer, who "was very enthusiastic and helped me much -- he was a skater when he was younger and knew all about my music."
The Stooges, meanwhile, have a new album titled "The Weirdness" due out March 20. Watt is expected to tour with the group sometime in the spring."

k8, kelly clarkson is a brilliant pop singer who won american idol a few years ago. her first album was not brilliant but her second album is. it's quite rocky, you've probably heard 'since u been gone'.

Ah well, at least Mark S got the joke.

The Long Grey And Overcast Tea Time Of The Soul (kate), Friday, 12 January 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

I liked "Since U Been Gone," this could be good. Someone here once suggested that middle aged rockists, or some other despised category (corny indie fux?), pretend to like Kelly Clarkson for pop cred. I don't think it should be a surprise that people who don't like much current pop music (which would include me) would like "Since U Been Gone," if they grew up on 70s pop/rock. (Same goes for Marit Larsen, and, to some extent, Shiina Ringo.)

R_S (RSLaRue), Friday, 12 January 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

Ah well, at least Mark S got the joke.

i chuckled too, sincerely.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 12 January 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

I'm a middle-aged rockist. I even get special tax breaks for owning certain Pentagram records. I don't really give a shit about Kelly Clarkson. But "Since You Been Gone" is a great song, so I've gotta give her that much credit.

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Friday, 12 January 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

Interpreter of dreams predictor of weather (Mr.Que), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

Don't think this is particularly surprising. I don't mean, "I always knew that someday she was going to play with Mike Watt" but rather "Someone who put a couple of scorching quasi-goth quasi-metal tracks ('Hear Me' and 'Addicted') on her previous album isn't going to quail at the idea of working with a punk bass player," especially when a forthcoming track like "Maybe" seems exactly along that line.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Friday, 12 January 2007 22:23 (eighteen years ago)

her last album was awesome, start to finish.

Matthew E. Armstrong (gensu3k1), Saturday, 13 January 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

I read this as "Mike Batt plays etc etc etc" and wondered why anyone would give a shit.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 13 January 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

Why is it that all of the people who hate pop music have come to a consenus to like Kelly Clarkson? To my ears she's rather bland. "Since U Been Gone" really isn't that good at all.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Saturday, 13 January 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

I'm reading Our Band Could Be Your Life and just recently got exposed to Double Nickels on the Dime. This is weird for me.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Saturday, 13 January 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

she's the new pat benatar

keyth (keyth), Saturday, 13 January 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

I missed the boat on the old Pat Benatar, so this is my chance to make up for that.

R_S (RSLaRue), Saturday, 13 January 2007 19:59 (eighteen years ago)

"who is mike watt?"

he's the man in the van, with the thud-staff in his hand.
he's from pedro, and jams econo.
still misses D, but gets by doing his thing.

i give watt mad props just for still kicking ass after all these years.
this'll be a footnote in his career.

the bigger issue is, wtf's gibby been doing??!

edde (edde), Saturday, 13 January 2007 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

Also: "people who hate pop music"

R_S (RSLaRue), Saturday, 13 January 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

actual relevant answer for Lex - most of Sonic Youth (and Coco Moore) appear on Watt's first solo LP, and he sort-of formed Ciccone Youth (he's also had a covers band called The Madonnabes for ten or twenty years).

There's a slimmer chance that you've heard of Porno For Pyros or J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr, but I suppose they've got higher profiles than most of the people he's played with (that are younger than the Stooges.)

And I saw him jam live with Tricky in 1996.

nu-mongrel (kit brash), Saturday, 13 January 2007 23:55 (eighteen years ago)

"I heard that Kelly won some game show,"

watt is reverse-lex!

Since U Been Gone is only the 4th or 5th best song on the album, though.

Clarkson will be "integrated into all aspects of NASCAR

Singer Kelly Clarkson partners with NASCAR
Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - Kelly Clarkson will soon be showing her racing stripes in the biggest partnership NASCAR has ever made with a music artist, the sports franchise announced Thursday.

"Anyone who knows me knows I'm a race fan and love NASCAR," the former "American Idol" and Grammy-winning singer said in a NASCAR press release. "I look forward to hanging out with the fans, drivers and the entire NASCAR community."

Clarkson will be "integrated into all aspects of NASCAR," including television spots, charitable events and NASCAR's awards dinner in New York City in December, NASCAR said.

The deal kicks off with Clarkson headlining the NEXTEL "Tribute To America" concert airing live on Fox just before the Daytona 500 in Florida on Feb. 18.

During the appearance, Clarkson will film a 30-second NASCAR spot for TV featuring a new song from her upcoming third album.

She will also serve as a spokeswoman for the fourth annual NASCAR Day on May 18, 2007.

Other artists who have partnered with NASCAR include the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sheryl Crow, Jewel, Lenny Kravitz and LeAnn Rimes.

Clarkson's "enthusiasm for NASCAR as a fan of NASCAR will surely develop into an unparalleled relationship," said NASCAR's Sarah Nettinga in a statement.

The 24-year-old singer rose to pop-rock stardom after snagging the first "American Idol" crown in 2002.

Her debut album, "Thankful," earned double-platinum status, and the multiplatinum follow-up, "Breakaway," garnered two Grammy awards in 2006.

every few years, all the hipsters gotta have their token mainstream act...ten years ago it was the spice girls, a few short years ago it was justin timberlake, now its clarkson's turn

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Friday, 19 January 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

Once again, I don't hear too much current pop that sounds that much like "Since U Been Gone." I think that might have a lot to do with people who aren't normally into current pop liking that song.

R_S (RSLaRue), Friday, 19 January 2007 23:53 (eighteen years ago)

edde (edde), Saturday, 20 January 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

five months pass...

Show of hands -- who likes this record?

I do. The first three tracks are all great -- "no hooks," they say, but who cares? It's got riffs, and great production. The lyrics are a little sub-Fiona, but I like where she's going here.

kenan, Friday, 29 June 2007 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, me too. Well, some of it anyway. But I won't hold that against her, because I really only liked about half of Breakaway too.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 29 June 2007 01:37 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, it's a thoroughly OK album, which works for me. I like "Can I Have A Kiss" and "Sober" a lot (although the latter still really doesn't sound like a single). And there are great little vocal moments in even the bad songs, like the awesome bridge in "Yeah."

Per the subject line, was it ever announced exactly which songs on the album Watt plays on? I've heard varying reports of him being or three or six or four songs but not any specific titles. A couple songs sound like they could be him but nothing jumps out as an obvious Watt moment.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 29 June 2007 01:42 (eighteen years ago)

"How I Feel" has got to be one of the Watt tracks.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 29 June 2007 01:49 (eighteen years ago)

I know he plays on "Can I Have A Kiss."

reddening, Friday, 29 June 2007 02:51 (eighteen years ago)

The best Mike Watt story I heard recently was reading what Iggy said to him when they finally OK'd him for the Stooges reunion.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Friday, 29 June 2007 03:08 (eighteen years ago)

Per the subject line, was it ever announced exactly which songs on the album Watt plays on?

uh yeah, the liner notes announce it? he plays on two, and he and the guy who plays on most of the rest play on a third.

I haven't heard it though.
