I loved the Marisa/Carlos song. She's such an amazing beauty—she looks like Frida Kahlo. I'm waitiing for another Tribalistas record. I was so addicted to the first, it was all I listened to for a whole summer. She has the most beautiful smoke-tinged soprano in the world, and with Arnaldo's robot-from-the-planet-of-love voice woven through it, what could be better?

not youtube but related: here's the blurb on a sydney festival event happening next week -

Featuring a line-up of Brazil's music icons, the Bossa Nova Hot Club is a sultry blend of samba, jazz, poetry and inescapable rhythms. The night is fronted by musical director Marcos Valle, composer of the classic Samba de Verao, with special guests Wand Sá (the voice of Sergio Mendes and Brasil '65), piano maestro and originator of the bossa nova rhythm João Donato, and guitarist and composer Roberto Menescal. Supporting this line up of bossa nova cool is a hot quartet including Jesse Sadoc on flugelhorn and singer Patrizia Alvi.

Bateman is in full Michael Bluth mode here, playing the only semi-responsible guy trying to steer a ship of fools and he leads an all-around strong cast that also includes J.K. Simmons and an amusingly obnoxious David Koechner.

Eurovision style song contests were a big part of the musical landscape in various places during the 60's and 70's, just a very effective way to get your music out there to TV audiences and I guess the contest format gave artists a certain level of motivation too.

Nara Leão, os Mutantes, Caetano, Gilberto Gil, Roberto Carlos, Elis Regina - all human life is here. Very interesting to see the amount of bureaucracy, they take the contest aspect VERY seriously and in between songs numbers are pulled to decide who gets to go next.

a ZX spectrum is haunting Europe (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 18 March 2025 11:40 (nine months ago)

That performance of "Alegria Alegria"...Caetano looking all nervous at the start, then gradually winning the audience over until all the audience members are shouting along and it ends with chants of "já ganhou" ("this one's already won"). Transcendental.

a ZX spectrum is haunting Europe (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 18 March 2025 11:42 (nine months ago)

29:26 - the announcer says that the following song will be presented in a different arrangement and the crowd goes APESHIT with anger? there must be some historical context here to dig up.

a ZX spectrum is haunting Europe (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 18 March 2025 11:51 (nine months ago)

no historical context, we're just rowdy lol

fpsa, Tuesday, 18 March 2025 15:08 (nine months ago)

if you ever see the boos on these editions, it's just because they think the song is apolitical

fpsa, Tuesday, 18 March 2025 15:10 (nine months ago)

or that it betrayed the national spirit, like alegria alegria, by using electric guitars

there's a doc about just that episode btw
https://www.imdb.com/pt/title/tt1754803/

fpsa, Tuesday, 18 March 2025 15:15 (nine months ago)

Sergio Ricardo's wikipedia page says he was booed because the song was "too complex" for an audience wanting to hear Roberto Carlos, but considering everyone loved Elis Regina, Os Mutantes and Caetano Veloso I'm gonna say that's defensive revisionism from a Ricardo fan.

I was just a bit surprised by how immediate the anger is, but I guess since this is the final they'd have already heard and decided they hated the song on a previous showing?

a ZX spectrum is haunting Europe (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 18 March 2025 15:17 (nine months ago)

Yeah I was aware of some of the MPB antipathy towards the anglo influences of the tropicalistas, but Caetano absolutely wins the audience over imo.

Will check that doc!

11:00 -- what did they throw at caetano??
