Bab Lee - ”Tropical Mix (Sous les cocotiers)"

http://www.dailymotion.com/visited/search/bablee/video/xakx_babi-ca-peut-tuer

Ok, this is not not proper Chicago house from Cote d'Ivoire, but some weird enough instrumental coupé-décalé complete with hypnotic keyboards and pitiless drum programming. It may be the best dance track i've heard in years. And the video's really nice.

Etienne Menu (Etienne), Friday, 12 January 2007 09:54 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, this is pretty great.

(c'est quoi le coupé-décalé?)

is anyone anticipating the new Baaderonixx? (baaderonixx), Friday, 12 January 2007 10:16 (eighteen years ago)

coupé-décalé is an ivoryan dance and lifestyle based on georges bataille-style money "dépense" and fine looks, and then a music trend much inspired by congo's soukouss

didier drogba often is often dancing coupé-décalé style after he scores

Etienne Menu (Etienne), Friday, 12 January 2007 10:22 (eighteen years ago)

wow, searching "coupé décalé" on youtube brings up some gems: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXb3tIRtir8

(sorry for derailing thread...)

Best thread ever, and I haven't even heard the record yet.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 12 January 2007 10:26 (eighteen years ago)

just can't believe no one gives a shit about that track

have you just heard those snares?

Etienne Menu (Etienne), Sunday, 14 January 2007 12:23 (eighteen years ago)

I am totally down with a genre inspired by Bataille.

God Bows to Meth (noodle vague), Sunday, 14 January 2007 12:26 (eighteen years ago)

Track is fricking great, btw.

God Bows to Meth (noodle vague), Sunday, 14 January 2007 12:35 (eighteen years ago)

that track is awesome!

lex pretend (lex pretend), Sunday, 14 January 2007 12:51 (eighteen years ago)

Fun! Didn't see the Chicago angle until a snarestorm reminded me of a Ron Hardy acid workout.

blunt (blunt), Sunday, 14 January 2007 14:04 (eighteen years ago)

really good.

just came back from Ivory coast in Dec with a Cd of mp3's, Ill see if its on there.

most cut & run music has loads of vocals over it. never appreciated how acid it was till now.

danny boy (danny boy), Sunday, 14 January 2007 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

Wow.

the table is the table (treesessplode), Monday, 15 January 2007 23:53 (eighteen years ago)

i love this type shit, let's keep talking.

the table is the table (treesessplode), Monday, 15 January 2007 23:54 (eighteen years ago)

some of the other videos on youtube were good, but...none as good as that first one. even the dancing in the first one fucking kills. how to start? inquiring minds want to know.

the table is the table (treesessplode), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 01:48 (eighteen years ago)

UH

this is OK but lots of french house producers (HI DERE AFRICANISM) have been making tracks in this vein for a long time.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 03:55 (eighteen years ago)

coupe decale means "cut + paste" right?

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 03:55 (eighteen years ago)

I like this. Let's make it the next big hipster thing. But no really I like it.

R_S (RSLaRue), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 04:23 (eighteen years ago)

i mean that's totally fine, v, but the fact remains that it doesn't really matter-- some of it sounds good, so any argument regarding whether someone's done something before don't really matter. it's fucking dance music.

the table is the table (treesessplode), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 04:26 (eighteen years ago)

oh come on that's way better than ok!

josh. (disco stu), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 04:28 (eighteen years ago)

Best thread ever, and I haven't even heard the record yet.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 04:31 (eighteen years ago)

let's not turn this into "the next baile funk" or what have you

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 04:37 (eighteen years ago)

no one has said, "ISE GONNA TURN THIS INTO THE NEXT BAILE FUNK." other than this: Let's make it the next big hipster thing , which seemed in jest, nothing of the sort. you like it = you like it, or whatever the case may be.

the table is the table (treesessplode), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 04:44 (eighteen years ago)

just sayin

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 04:50 (eighteen years ago)

can we block all journalists from accessing this thread?

friday on the porch (lfam), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 04:52 (eighteen years ago)

i guess i just don't care that much.

the table is the table (treesessplode), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 04:55 (eighteen years ago)

i mean, there are plenty of things that get shitty with lots of hype and whatnot, but i think that what matters most is what's going on in the sound-- if it sucks, it sucks. if not, great.

take a hyped track. let's do carl craig's 'relevee.' so it goes throught the DJs, the dance music types, the 'blogosphere' (fucking dumshit word), and eventually, a lot of people know about it. even people who aren't into dance music. they might even dance to it. ISN'T THAT A GOOD THING?? i just want to know where you're coming from. even Baile Funk-- yeah, it sucks if you have to see awful people dancing stupid-slutty and vomiting Bud Ice all over each other to it, but a lot of it is still perfectly good music. not something i dance around in my room to, but good.

the table is the table (treesessplode), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 05:08 (eighteen years ago)

I like it better...more funky housey, less electro/bass-y.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 05:12 (eighteen years ago)

i like baile funk, but it never made me want to move much on a floor. in a bed = different story.

the table is the table (treesessplode), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 05:21 (eighteen years ago)

this is seriously the most exciting thing i've heard in a long long time. thanks very much for posting it

simon gabriel (one off), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

Vahid, I usually approve your comments but this time I'm afraid I don't get your Africanism comparison. It's just not the same dynamics, neither the same sounds, apart from the tribalhouse-ish element... But maybe I haven't listened to the good tunes.

And I have to remind you that it's not your regular coupé-décalé track, so please no new genre craze, at least for the moment! But of course I wish it could be.

Etienne Menu (Etienne), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

read : "I have to remind you" >> not "you Vahid", more "you who talked about a possible new baile funk"

And Simon, you're welcome, it's a pleasure to share such a great track.

Etienne Menu (Etienne), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

A translation of coupé-décalé could be "cut & shift". Better left as is

blunt (blunt), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

There's some pretty great dancing in these videos.

R_S (RSLaRue), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

exactly.

josh. (disco stu), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 04:35 (eighteen years ago)

Just for the record my 'best thread ever' comment was largely prompted by the mention of the Drogba dance rather than 'ooh, Ivory Coast dance music!'

That said if this had appeared in the Pop World Cup last year then Cote D'Ivoire would've romped home.

(Not to mention the fact I say 'best thread ever' in like 25% of all threads anyway)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 09:33 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks Etienne for this!

I am still somewhat on the fence about the track, but I think listening to it on computer speakers is not helping.

is anyone anticipating the new Baaderonixx? (baaderonixx), Friday, 19 January 2007 08:00 (eighteen years ago)

five months pass...

Coupé-Décalé now seems to be all over the place. Maybe it is, indeed, the new Baile Funk...?

baaderonixx, Thursday, 5 July 2007 07:58 (eighteen years ago)

Anyone have mp3s of this stuff? It's a great groove (maybe needs a hook though).

Spencer Chow, Thursday, 5 July 2007 08:04 (eighteen years ago)

I have plenty at home, I could put them up. Otherwise searching for "coupé décalé" on your favorite music-providing platform should yield good results.

baaderonixx, Thursday, 5 July 2007 08:07 (eighteen years ago)

My fave remains the one I linked to way upthread, Teeyah "Coupe Decale"

baaderonixx, Thursday, 5 July 2007 08:08 (eighteen years ago)

seven years pass...

Need more Coupé Decalé and Soukouss. These were big on my playlist last summer but I think they're quite old cuts now:
