Actually Robert Wyatt and Mel Torme had a BIG argument in the NME in the mid-'70s about the aesthetics of scat singing. Wyatt preferred "the longer line" as opposed to staccato rebop and Torme said that he knew jackshit about singing, let alone scatting.
