Can someone explain the appeal of the "can someone explain ____" thread?

is it the most passive-aggresive way to test the waters of opinion?

You tell me.

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Friday, 12 January 2007 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

yes, I aver.

J. Grizzle (trainsmoke), Friday, 12 January 2007 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

thread closed.

J. Grizzle (trainsmoke), Friday, 12 January 2007 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

'explain me X' is far better

reverto levidensis (blueski), Friday, 12 January 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

The thread starters expect ILX to rise up behind them in unison, justifying their shaky belief that _____ sucks. When this doesn't happen, their self-confidence is utterly shattered and they go home and listen to the Beatles and cry.

I DON'T LIKE THESE KIND OF THREADS EITHER. I ALSO HATE THE "I LIKE MUSIC WHAT OTHER MUSIC WOULD I LIKE????" THREADS. lazy bastards.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 12 January 2007 15:48 (eighteen years ago)

How about the "Scott Seward, please post 1000 pix, kthx", threads?

I mean, if there were some resource on the web that could teach me about the appeal of such threads, i would have investigated it...hence, the point.

J. Grizzle (trainsmoke), Friday, 12 January 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

Scott, are you serious, what's wrong with that question? How is it lazy? It's just another way of gathering suggestions.

R_S (RSLaRue), Friday, 12 January 2007 15:52 (eighteen years ago)

"How about the "Scott Seward, please post 1000 pix, kthx", threads?"

duh, classic.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 12 January 2007 15:52 (eighteen years ago)

some of scott's 'i own a lot of records' threads can be okay.

"Scott, are you serious, what's wrong with that question? How is it lazy? It's just another way of gathering suggestions."

USUALLY, there are, like, 20 threads on the style/genre/band that the person is asking about. that's what i meant by lazy. people want some instant buyer's guide instead of just looking around a little first. i don't know why people ned their hand held so much. investigate! dig around! it's one of the things that makes life fun.

same with the "PLEASE TO EXPLAIN" threads. i never get the idea that people have actually LISTENED intently to whatever they are confused about. i don't mind the ones where people actually state their argument/reasons/etc. thoughfulness goes a long way. instead of some one sentence "what's the deal, this sucks" kinda thing.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 12 January 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

YES BECAUSE AS EVERYONE KNOWS ALL I DO ON ILM IS POST PICTURES AND LISTS OF RECORDS

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 12 January 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

i don't know why people ned their hand held so much.

Carefully phrased.

Yeah, that's why I should not have become a reference librarian. Even under the best of circumstances, that's what it tends to mean.

Still, asking on a board like this is one way of investigating. But I do think people should do a search first or poke around a little.

x-post: I think I actually might recognize that person! (Not from real life.)

i just don't like the feeling of doing someone's homework for them at times. COME BACK WHEN HAVE THOUGHT.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

but rilly it's a case by case kinda thing. when someone starts a thread and sez hey i've really been excited by this and this and this and here is why and i don't usually listen to this and omg this is the best THEN it just feels more natural to respond by saying: yah, me too if yoo like that you might also like...

instead of moran who sez I LIK MELVINS WAHT OTHER MELVINS LIK?

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

Edie, right?

R_S (RSLaRue), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

(x-post unnoted.)

I like "COME BACK WHEN HAVE THOUGHT."

R_S (RSLaRue), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

i like them almost as much as the 'here is where i discus the records on my alphabeticized shelf' thread.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

I take it all back. This is turning into annoying thread day. I've been annoyed with pictures lately though. It's always other people's photos that are annoying. Or is it? A lot of times I am almost immediately annoyed by the ones I post too.

Even with a typo it only took 4 minutes to invoke teh Ned!

onimo (onimo), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

(x-post) No, I was being embarrassingly candid. God knows what the context of that photo is, but on it's own I quite like it.

Anyhow, on with the bitchslaps please.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha! that picture up above reminded me of this thread:

"Nick Hornby is full of shit. Actually, this is unfair to shit. At least life grows from shit." WTF?

i heart rockist

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)

That's why I posted it.

R_S (RSLaRue), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

This new year just aint startin' out right, is it?

tolstoy (tolstoy), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

Amateurist was about the only one to agree with me. This must have been before our temporary falling out over some political thread on ILE.

R_S (RSLaRue), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

i'd forgotten about that thread.

it's still early! 2007 has a long way to go to beat 2006's suckiness.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

although give him time he's working on it.
