question for people who play joy division in bars: what, precisely, is your major malfunction?

like OK i dig them too - they were my first favorite band! - and maybe "transmission" is cool to jam out to while slammin brews with bros but seriously, do you think you're impressing anyone? it's like the musical equivalent of that "reading sylvia plath in a strip club" thing.

NOTE: this is not the same as playing "sister ray" in bars, which is a great idea. people LOVE "sister ray"!

HA HA HA HA I WANT TO DO THIS

Ted Hughes (Mr.Que), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

But what if it's Joy Division doing "Sister Ray" ?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

no. only their "louie louie" would be acceptable.

i never understood why 'love will tear us apart' is played at clubs. i like it but i don't want to listen to a total downer when i'm trying to dance! like, way to kill any mood whatsoever.

lex pretend (lex pretend), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

But it's dancey!!!

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

the entire history of goth clubs to...oh, fuck it.

cheesesteak and shake (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

1) it is not dancey
2) the mindset of goths and goth clubs is one big mystery to me too

(i'd link that bit of "Love will" off TOTP, but it's not on Youtube. Just on my old VHS tape then)

I heard Joy Division in a juice bar the other day. Their music sounded better there than it normally does. I don't really know why.

mark s (mark s), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

WAIT A SECOND THERE ARE TWO THREADS ON THIS, I DON'T WANT TO HAVE TO SPLIT MY TIME BETWEEN YOU BOTH, THIS IS JUST LIKE KRAMER V KRAMER.

AllyzayEisenschefterBDawkinsFlyingSquirrelRomoCrying.jpg (allyzay), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

predictably i love the nouvelle vague LWTUA better (and would totally understand that being played in a bar)

lex pretend (lex pretend), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

Sumner v Sumner

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 12 January 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)

boo i was hoping that alex's thread and mine were like matter and anti-matter and if they touched on the new answers page ilm might explode ;_;

gangbanged by drunken hairdressers (teenagequiet), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)

There are lots of JD songs that are more danceable than "Love Will Tear Us Apart," I'll agree with you there

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 12 January 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)

The faster LWTUA is 100x better than the slower one that usually gets played.

Were you both in the same bar?

braveclub (braveclub), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

i like the swans version where GIRA gets the tune wrong

mark s (mark s), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

nothing bummed me out more than seeing a pregnant woman driking beer, 430 am, in a shitty bar/shitty car repair shop (which is placed on the side of a dirty river, btw), dancing "heart and soul".

flavio pessoa (flavio pessoa), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

And yet I would kinda have loved to see that

Feargal Hixxy (DJ Mencap), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

that is maybe the only time it is appropriate to play joy division in a bar

a_p (a_p), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

wait a second, I want to learn more about the bar/car repair shop thing?

Is that the version that's on the b-side of the original 45? The side that's meant to be played at 33?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 12 January 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

well, you have to be there to understand.

the bar/car repair shop isnt some amazing place either; here in brazil, it's normal to have these really crappy and dirty places where you do small repairs and stuff. most of them are also places where you drink really cheap beer and pinga, they're called pega-bebo, translated catch-a-drunk. usually who goes and drink in these places are people with less money, or teenagers skipping class.

so there's this place on my town, and over the years the place would allow bands to play and people would put music and jazz and becomes this trendy spot to go really late at night.. i saw this scene some years ago, 2003 i think, and really, the place that night really stunk, it was pitch dark, me and two girls on one spot, the pregnant girl in the middle of the "dancefloor", where during the day people would put the car and change the oil.
