mira calix - eyes set against the sun (or how I learned to love the lex)

it was an ostensibly ordinary friday. I was reading the guardian, as is my wont. I encountered a review of the undeniably lovely and elegaically blissful new mira calix album on warp. the review was largely complimentary, if not overly effusive. "yes," I thought to myself, "I largely agree. clearly this writer and I are kindred spirits."

BUT...to my horror it turned out to be a review by the lex, normally a man whose work I can spot a mile off by vast and bizarre pronouncements about the alleged wonderfulness of akon's voice and the impeccable musical discernment of top-deck teenage muggers.

surely not.

I checked.

it really was him.

I have fond myself on unlikely common ground. I'm scared. nice job mister lex, sir!

but quite apart from all that ILX music-journo bollocks, it is a fine album by ms calix and deserves its own thread. so here it is.

ten months pass...

Is Eyes Against the Sun still in print in the US? Was it ever? Why do I have to pay import prices for it now?

Leee, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

Huh, Forced Exposure said it's UK-only, even though the original Warp release announcement said it would be. :(

According to an interview I read at the time, the vocals on 'Ms Meteo' were recorded into a dictaphone on a train, which blew my mind.

holy shit, what the hell. I always liked her stuff and regret not getting more into it

she's married to one of the Autechre guys right?

frogbs, Monday, 28 March 2022 18:18 (three years ago)

Well shit. She was only 52? Her album last year was really quite interesting and well produced, and seemed a wonderful "comeback" record given it was her first in 13 years. Very sad it's indeed her swan song.

octobeard, Monday, 28 March 2022 21:17 (three years ago)

xp that was a long time ago, and even before they split she kept her personal life private. I wouldn't conjecture, but the late 90s/early 00s idm messageboards/etc were insanely toxic

mira calix releases have such a distinct voice. terrible to hear this

I don’t have much to write other than Mira, in addition to being a musician I loved, was an incredible friend and collaborator. I’m devastated.

I hadn't seen her for ages but she was a friend in the 90s. She turned up in London and made so many friends, brought people together, instigated situations and was a lovely person. Fuck. Sad and also happy to see Kev's pictures and words https://www.djfood.org/chantal-passamonte-1970-2022/

I'm trying to remember when I've met Chantal. A few times, I think, in her former role as a Warp Records press officer. I've reviewed her records and chatted to her on Twitter/social media. She has always seemed "a force for good". And I feel crushed to hear that she has died. Just want to send thoughts to others who I know will know her far better than I do - sorry for your loss. x

Thanks friends.

I wrote a Twitter thread about a recent collaboration:

I hadn't seen her in so long but I hold those times very dear. That thing of going out as a group and hanging at each other's houses. Chantal who we'd just met inviting a bunch of us round for a meal and getting everyone involved in preparing it. Like a family thing, which she would say we were. I think just before she moved in to the fish house in Dulwich she'd decorated the walls of a room in this council flat sublet near Clissold Park. I ended up taking that room instead and spent a lot of time seeing um... dolphins and stuff in the blue swirls on the wall. Weirdly the same thing happened with another room in a squat she'd decorated before arranging something more salubrious. I remember spending one Christmas at the place in Dulwich, Chantal and friend playing the Cocteau Twins' Frosty The Snowman on repeat until it turned frankly sinister (which tbf doesn't take long.) Please excuse the self indulgent vignettes, I'm not in touch with so many mutual friends who will have still been close with her and just want to say something.

Nice piece in the NYT:

Her cause of death is still private. Her partner did not disclose.
