Have just seen The Vines on sat.morning tv. This is a band trumpeted by the uk music press (all five of them) as sounding "like all of your favourite bands"(real quote!) /the new nirvana / add your own sweaty-boy hyperbole here!! While there may be some poor saps praying nightly for a new nirvana (Parents beware: This is a cult, contact your local de-programmer) i can only object to having such turgid, turdlike excresence squeezed through my tv speakers so early in the day.

The Sugarbabes were grate, though!

Jez, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nope nope the sugarbabes were'nt great - they were o.k - wich is all you can be after swaping one of your better members for someone who would agree to wearing there newly conformed leather slut stylies.

cherrysqueak, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I saw them open for the Doves yesterday. They were eh. Just eh. Guitars, yelling, looking bored. Eh. Also the singer seemed to croon whenever screaming would have worked and screamed all over nice melodic bits.

The Music were the other support band, mind, and were ACE.

thom, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If the Music were ACE then I am a man without a tastein music

They were shit

The Vines were a band with bags of potential and aspiration. Its not finished they were somewhere between Dinsoaur JR and Neul Young

Sonicred, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Vines go on and on about being an Australian band but they'd never made it out of Sydney before going to LA to record their album. Talk about running before you can crawl. They were probably scared that if they played in Melbourne people would realise that shit doesn't fly here..

electric sound of jim, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, definitely something fishy about that. that said, 'the factory' is a cute song. but everything else of theirs i've heard has been shit.

minna, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Horrid band. The single is indeed cute. But they needed their dads to tune up their ickle guitars for them - the poor dears - in the pub I saw them play, and the stench of corporate hype overwhelms what nascent musical merit they may or may not possess. And they're wankers.

Jerry, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and I second the remark about Melbourne.

They would have been howled off the stage in that fair city, for being a totally crap and disinterested live band.

Jerry, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mm, got sent a promo copy of the new single today and it's like christ how many times do i have to hear recycled nirvanaisms. i dont dislike bands for copying other bands, i do dislike it when the source material is lazy, obvious and drawn from sources of overinflated media hype to begin with.

destroy: every band that's ever copied oasis search: bands that copy piano magic and make a considerably better job of it than pm themselves

real genius isn't just copying stuff and disguising your influences, it is knowing *what* to copy and knowing what *not* to play

did, Tuesday, 9 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
my my, how negativity breeds negativity ... these guys are the most talented muscians i've probably heard in the last 5 years, and with the most potential. And I can comment because I have their album, still unreleased at this stage, Highly Evolved. It is an absolute killer, and if you don't like them, that's too bad because you will be hearing their name everywhere in the next few months after the album's release. THEY ARE GONNA BE HUGE. Pity Triple J snubbed them for Killing Heidi when The Vines sent in their demo to Unearthed. They will truly regret that. Maybe that is why The Vines have in turned snubbed Australia, can't blame 'em for that.

Arwen Undomiel to thread!!

mark s, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I won't have them in the house.

Arwen, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They were probably scared that if they played in Melbourne...

or they were afraid to traverse the plains where the dread FUNNEL-WEB lurks!
poor aussies must find solace in music to medicate fears
of the male Platypus with its loathesome spurs
or the SaltWater Crocodile that stalks the northern swamps
and don't forget the Sea Wasp!

Funnel-Webs - I won't have them in the house!

Australia - don't even go there...
...no no no no no no no!!!

Paul, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

good thing we have the Discovery channel to warn us, though

Paul, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The bass player and the drummer are totally boring and hot!

Rockin' Steve Rock, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dear Paul, what the fuck are you on about?

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

these guys are the most talented muscians i've probably heard in the last 5 years

doesn't really seem to help their songwriting, unfortunately

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry Jim, must have been bitten by one of the silly-bugs we have here

Paul, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Haven't read any of the hype but played the album this morning and it's fantastic. If you like fraggle rock, sub-Pixies growling and ambitions as wide as a clenched fist, that is. Fuck them being the new Nirvana. They're not even the new Strokes: they're the new King Adora. Sheesh. These bands should be named and shamed.

Chris, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Since when did being a talented musician equate with being a halfway decent live band? Or is that what matters in rock: how many fucking notes and chromatic chords you can play.

Please don't let this information out, or our venues will be filled with even more dullards from guitar shops, as opposed to dullards like The Vines and Jon Spencer who wished they worked in guitar shops.

Actually, I have no idea what a chromatic chord is.

Jerry, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

On a side note, why does every decent guitar shop have someone who looks worryingly like David Crosby working there?

Our best local guitar shop also has a guy who looks like Ultra Nate as well. We are trully bless'd.

Dom Passantino, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

seven months pass...
I stopped into the Tower Records in downtown Chicago today, and beneath a display of the Vines' Highly Evolved there was a little sign that looked like someone ran it off on a printer:

NOT RECOMMENDED

That made me happy.

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 23 January 2003 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Something I noticed about the Vines - their b-sides are actually consistently quite good. An album made up of their b-sides would crap all over Highly Evolved. "Get Free" and "outtathaway" are probably their two worst songs.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 23 January 2003 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish they would make more of those little signs.

Curtis Stephens, Thursday, 23 January 2003 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I suppose you don't like Steppenwolf either!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 23 January 2003 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Did anyone ever like them beyond the two or three songs?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 January 2003 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i haven't written them off completely yet..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 23 January 2003 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

EXACTLY, Ned! Two or three songs! Though at least Steppenwolf didn't fill the rest of their album with Oasis wanna-be snorers. I too am hopefuly the Vines will sell-out and give us more cute Nirvana and not retreat to their acousticy side.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 23 January 2003 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I like one (early) B-side. But only cos it reminded me of 10CC.

On an upnote, I see that the single is now going for £25 on ebay. Better sell it now, because that price sure as hell won't hold.

Jerry (Jerry), Thursday, 23 January 2003 08:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's why I like The Vines:

I like the Nirvana formula- I like the whole fast/slow thang, the screaming, the riffage.

However, Nirvana are so buried by "I wish it was 1992" moping and slightly mysoginistic Courtney-dissin' that I simply cannot enjoy them, and don't think I will be able to until at least ten more years have passed. Most of my generation has been brainwashed by their older silbings into thinking that Grunge circa '92 was the greatest thing EVAH and nothing we'll ever experience could possibly compare. Fuck that!

(And I sure as hell ain't about to become a Pixies fan, either.)

So, The Vines give me the kickass formula, but without all the baggage attached to it. The hype may be annoying, but it exists to a much lesser degree than it does with the other The The bands (everyone seems to agree that The Vines aren't *the greatest band ever*- well, except the NME, but really, does anyone take *those* guys seriously anyway?)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 23 January 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

The album's a bit crap though, isn't it?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 23 January 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

C'mon, like I would've really bought the *album*?? I like the formula but I don't like it that much!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 23 January 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

ehehehehehehehehehe...

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 23 January 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

five years pass...

Six years is a mighty long time in rock ‘n’ roll. Though it might only feel like yesterday that Sydney band The Vines ram raided their way into the UK, 2008 finds them releasing a ‘Best Of’ their first three albums after having parted company with their American label Capitol. The Best of The Vines, released in April, is an overview of an accelerated career; six years lived in a whirlwind of legendary gigs, gruelling world tours, breakdowns, break ups and spliff smoke.

Christ ALIVE, people

DJ Mencap, Monday, 10 March 2008 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

See, in these days of "Carbon Neut" and "are you sure you need to fly?" air travel, why not have a caveat on all albums:

Is anyone actually going to want this?

Mark G, Monday, 10 March 2008 16:05 (seventeen years ago)

they actually had three albums?

Roz, Monday, 10 March 2008 16:12 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, the "good" one, the "shit" one, and the "soz" one.

Mark G, Monday, 10 March 2008 16:13 (seventeen years ago)

The Best of The Vines

deej, Monday, 10 March 2008 16:31 (seventeen years ago)

Doh, sorry deej. I did have a vaguely amusing press release to share at least

DJ Mencap, Monday, 10 March 2008 16:37 (seventeen years ago)

ha no apology needed, just supplemental

deej, Monday, 10 March 2008 16:40 (seventeen years ago)

Nirvana are so buried by "I wish it was 1992" moping

???

Was Nirvana wishing it was 1992 when it was actually 1992?

That might be the most innovative thing I've ever heard from a rock band. No wonder the critics went nuts.

Drugs A. Money, Monday, 10 March 2008 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

fuck!

Drugs A. Money, Monday, 10 March 2008 23:21 (seventeen years ago)

I had to buy an issue of The Face for my gf at the time with their singer on the front, topless. The shame of it.

Bodrick III, Monday, 10 March 2008 23:22 (seventeen years ago)

I kinda like "Ride With Me."

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 01:54 (seventeen years ago)

I was going to say "Cold Hard Bitch" is ok (if horrifying), but apparently that's another band entirely.

milo z, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 03:09 (seventeen years ago)

yes, yes it is

electricsound, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 03:09 (seventeen years ago)

lol, don't these doofuses have a new record coming out?

haitch, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 03:33 (seventeen years ago)

I saw them play on Sunday. Singer dude was wearing a white belt and indulging in some serious self/record company loathing whilst threatening all and sundry the imminent release of new material.

They were quite entertaining though, in-between rants.

SeekAltRoute, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 10:41 (seventeen years ago)

Jet or Vines?
