Deerhoof - Friend Opportunity

Friend Opportunity was talked and praised a lot via the sandbox, but here - Nada!

this may happen for 2 reasons:
1. it's the sort of record that sounds great in the beginning but you get tired of it really quickly.
2. no one bothered to open a new thread about it here (fixed now).

choose the correct answer.

Maybe it's because the album hasn't even been release yet.

"Maybe it's because the album hasn't even been release yet. "

thanks fandango!

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Saturday, 13 January 2007 21:05 (eighteen years ago)

now, don't get me wrong, i respect deerhoof as musicians and as people. BUT. this is the most annoying music ever recorded!!! quirk for quirk's sake. cuteness. "choo choo choo choo, beep beep" <--- the voice of a generation. it's like all the parts of american indie rock that bug me all rolled into one execrable whole, from the 'live' sounding drums, the knowing, cloying vox, the same dirty guitar tone we've heard 70 trillion times before. it sounds like the soundtrack to Adult Swim cartoons. I HATE IT!!!!!!!!!

millenarian (millenarian), Saturday, 13 January 2007 22:42 (eighteen years ago)

"choo choo choo choo, beep beep"

I doubt they're trying to be Nabokov, frankly.

Anyhow, I quite like this album. It's strangely Broadway-ish. Also, yay for good mastering.

Turangalila (Salvador), Saturday, 13 January 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

(Bleh, wonky html.)

Turangalila (Salvador), Saturday, 13 January 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

But taken to greater extremes and done much better!

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Saturday, 13 January 2007 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

But taken to greater extremes and done much better!

Basically. They're the only band of this sort I can stomach, I think they're wonderful.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Saturday, 13 January 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

"sounds like the soundtrack to Adult Swim cartoons" + "It's strangely Broadway-ish" = "Family Guy" theme song?!

(not really..)

emekars (emekars), Saturday, 13 January 2007 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

I like this, although 'Kidz Are So Small' might just be the most annoying 1:39 of music I'll hear all year. Comes just after the best track, too.

+81 is a great song as well.

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Sunday, 14 January 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

i'll pick "the galaxist" as the perfect song here.

emekars (emekars), Sunday, 14 January 2007 00:05 (eighteen years ago)

'matchbox seeks maniac' is also ace, with the exception of that woman's pronunciation of the word 'maniac'.

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Sunday, 14 January 2007 00:32 (eighteen years ago)

"Cast-Off Crown" is the best song here. Though "Believe E.S.P." (very Stereolab-y) "Whither the Invisible Birds?" (hee, my friend called it "Satomi's Lament") & "The Perfect Me" are favorites, too.

Turangalila (Salvador), Sunday, 14 January 2007 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

By the way, is it Greg Saunier's voice on "Cast-Off Crown"? It's so pretty, it MAKES the song for me.

Turangalila (Salvador), Sunday, 14 January 2007 00:46 (eighteen years ago)

It's really beginning to anger me how they interrupt this superb sequence of songs with that near-unlistenable bilge. I suppose one song had to follow up Cast-Off Crown, and this one took the hit, although why it was ever on the album is utterly beyond me.

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Sunday, 14 January 2007 00:48 (eighteen years ago)

the last song is also very boring and long.(the 1st half is better - all 5 songs are great, while the 2nd - if they would cut tracks 6,8 and 10 out it would make a masterpiece e.p )

emekars (emekars), Sunday, 14 January 2007 00:55 (eighteen years ago)

"("very Stereolab-y")"
the record is also very fiery furnaces-y i'd say

emekars (emekars), Sunday, 14 January 2007 00:56 (eighteen years ago)

I only think that particular song is very Stereolab-y.

And no! Track 6 ("Whither...") is good! And I don't hate Kidz Are So Small, really. Agreed on the rest, though, emekars.

Turangalila (Salvador), Sunday, 14 January 2007 01:00 (eighteen years ago)

"kidz" is not half as annoying as "dog on the sidewalk" was.
i love greg sauniers voice, wish he would sing more.
this albums fucking great tho. the last track takes some getting used to, but its worth it.
killrockstars are doing a limited edition of the cd with loads of tat some stuff

zappi (joni), Sunday, 14 January 2007 01:01 (eighteen years ago)

did they get a new guitar player or something? they went all-out power-pop and basically jettisoned everything that i kind of liked about some of their other records.

james brooks (j_brooks), Sunday, 14 January 2007 01:02 (eighteen years ago)

that last track is definitely growing on me

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Sunday, 14 January 2007 01:06 (eighteen years ago)

Why? I can't get into it.

Turangalila (Salvador), Sunday, 14 January 2007 01:08 (eighteen years ago)

The trick is to listen to the first 3 minutes or so and then let the rest kinda subconsciously drift into your brain (so you're not really 'listening' to it), passively allowing the music to do its stuff. Then the last 30 seconds will kinda wake you up from the reverie with the slightly harsher chords and the lilting voice. It's like a sort of mini-snooze in music form, with the settling down, the inactivity, and the gentle rousing at the end. I think it works brilliantly.

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Sunday, 14 January 2007 01:17 (eighteen years ago)

i.e. busy yourself with something else as the last track plays, and it'll creep up on you so much more effectively.

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Sunday, 14 January 2007 01:18 (eighteen years ago)

i mean, the clue's in the song-title!

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Sunday, 14 January 2007 01:25 (eighteen years ago)

The 8th track sounds like they recorded it after spending a night sniffing markers and listening to MIA. I dig this on first listen though. "The Perfect Me" is killer, I love that organ sound.

adam j (In Place of Something Clever), Sunday, 14 January 2007 02:25 (eighteen years ago)

this is pretty average and the cover is hideous

critique de la vie quotidienne (modestmickey), Sunday, 14 January 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

i agree with louis that "cast off crown" is the best track. the beginning has a really cool groove to it, and when it breaks into the dudes voice it has a junior boys type vibe i like.

critique de la vie quotidienne (modestmickey), Sunday, 14 January 2007 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

My name isn't Louis.

Turangalila (Salvador), Sunday, 14 January 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

"cast off crown" is good, but it's too short - only one verse and one chorus.it leaves you eager for more.
plus, about the last song - i cant be convinced that it's not yet another post rock song.i give up on that one.

emekars (emekars), Sunday, 14 January 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

Turangalila, we've both called it as the best track! And I swear it repeats the verse and chorus.

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Sunday, 14 January 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

i love this band.

i'm super excited to see them again i hope they tour.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Sunday, 14 January 2007 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

mmm. some good stuff here...I was never that interested in deerhoof, but they were wondrous at ATP in december.

and these new tracks sound pretty bloody good, especially 'look away', which is all space and anticipation.

mister the guanoman (mister the guanoman), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 12:43 (eighteen years ago)

CHOO CHOO CHOO CHOO BEEP BEEP

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 12:51 (eighteen years ago)

ignition (remix)?

mister the guanoman (mister the guanoman), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 12:55 (eighteen years ago)

Only heard a few tracks offa Effo. Love 'em. But I'm a fan, so my love is as water. Have no problem with the CHOO CHOO CHOO CHOO BEEP BEEP. Hell, I'm still waiting for them to turn another phrase as great as BUNNY BUNNY BUNNY.

The live show is where it's at, though. Tight, loud and way more rawk than you'd expect. The Who riffs, which are kinda funny + cool on the records, really come slicing outta the noise mincer live. Saw 'em in NY last year and they (wait for it...) ripped dicks.

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

I just find it to be a missing of the point to criticize Deerhoof for their lyrical content. I would never suspect anyone would listen to their music for *that* aspect precisely.

Turangalila (Salvador), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
"If Deerhoof were a member of the Legion of Super Heroes, they’d be Color Kid; if Friend Opportunity were a heist movie, it’d be Ocean’s Twelve."

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

jess i understand why you had to cut that from my review but i wanted to post it somewhere for the sake of posterity

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

i see why he cut it from your review, too.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

i really like deerhoof. The push and pulls of the rhythms i like. Its loose but incredibly tight! The drummer is amazing.

Runners four was ace (if a little long) so must check this out

Mr Monket (apn99), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

this is a very good album!

roger goodell (gear), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

"Color Kid"?

this album's great - except for the last song, which I hate

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

Dit Luisterpaal-album is niet meer beschikbaar.

M. V. (M.V.), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

this is my favorite album of theirs since reveille -- I like every single track. and I love the last track, it's a hyper-detailed remodel of some of the things they were doing on holdypaws but much better -- it's weird people don't like it

the last two albums have great songs but the live versions have always blown away the studio versions, but the new album is so self-consciously produced, especially the transitions between songs, it seems like much more of a breakthrough

milton parker (Jon L), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

got this at lunch.

listened to it in the car...sounds great so far...logical extension of where they've been headed...reminds me of stereolab in places for some wierd reason.

M@tt He1g3s0n: oh u mad cuz im stylin on u (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

hey I just looked in the booklet! it's got all different covers neato...

between this and the new of montreal i just picked up it's been a banner day for creative cd packaging. take that mp3s!

M@tt He1g3s0n: oh u mad cuz im stylin on u (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 21:04 (eighteen years ago)

this is real good.

the last track is awesome - don't front!

it's like US Maple dismantling Foxtrot-era Genesis!

Good shit all around.

M@tt He1g3s0n: oh u mad cuz im stylin on u (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 1 February 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

heh. i bought a u.s. maple cd back around 98 or 99 and totally hated, can't remember what it sounded like. noise maybe?? so i sold it. now i bet i'd love it.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 1 February 2007 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

they were quiet noise. actually not really. i can't even do them justice.

i think they were the greatest band of the last 15 years, easily. the most important by far.

M@tt He1g3s0n: oh u mad cuz im stylin on u (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 1 February 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

whoa, good call, the last track really is US maple-y!

mike powell (mike powell), Thursday, 1 February 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

i got a mild colossamite vibe from it.

held tony (held tony), Thursday, 1 February 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

"matchbook seeks maniac" is an amazing pop song.

M@tt He1g3s0n: oh u mad cuz im stylin on u (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 1 February 2007 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

way better than runners four, imo.

fukasaku bloodbath (blackmail.is.my.life), Thursday, 1 February 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

i find a lot more to chew on, on runners four. though i love FO, i do skip around to the standouts

held tony (held tony), Thursday, 1 February 2007 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

Saw 'em last night in Seattle. Sounded better than they ever have -- given the jaggedness of the songs, the three-piece format makes a lot of sense. New stuff fit right in with the old.

Verdict = fucking amazing. Best band on the planet, circa now.

the new sincerity (Pye Poudre), Friday, 2 February 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)

the short length of this album gets me to play it over and over, i can't get enough.

the guitar tone on the 'look away' (last song) is really neat. alternately jarring and soothing. i love the part near the end of the song where its just the guitar playing by itself and he plays that little lick w/ the slight bend at the end of it.

6335 (6335), Friday, 2 February 2007 18:34 (eighteen years ago)

6335, i gotta go ahead and agree w/you on that one (lone, seemingly direct-to-recorder guitar played later on last track. liking it strongly ;))

nice to see a feature on pitchfork, interview w/guitar player. talks about the virtues of minimal music etc.

held tony (held tony), Friday, 2 February 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

speaking of, isn't one of the deerhoofs formerly of colossamite? and gorge trio?

M@tt He1g3s0n: oh u mad cuz im stylin on u (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 2 February 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)

I'm finally getting around to listening to this band after coming across Reveille. It sounds like I'll like this latest album as well, but are there any specific recommendations from all you more experienced Deerhoofers???

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Friday, 2 February 2007 21:38 (eighteen years ago)

apple O

held tony (held tony), Friday, 2 February 2007 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

roger goodell (gear), Friday, 2 February 2007 21:57 (eighteen years ago)

Apple' O was what got me hooked after hearing "Panda Panda Panda." There is no way you can hear "Panda Panda Panda" and not want to know just what the hell is going on w/ this band.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Friday, 2 February 2007 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

are there any specific recommendations from all you more experienced Deerhoofers???

i think the problem--if you can even call it a problem--is that deerhoof have made five really amazing (but slightly uneven) records in the past five years. everyone has their own favorite, i guess, but i'd say apple o might be the most concise.

mike powell (mike powell), Friday, 2 February 2007 22:20 (eighteen years ago)

Reveille is the best. And their back to the same trio lineup which is very nice.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 2 February 2007 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

apple O

6335 (6335), Friday, 2 February 2007 23:27 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks for the replies!

Hmmm, seeing as Apple O was next after Reveille, I may just go chronologically with this.
But are there any opinions on the pre-Reveille Deerhoof?

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Friday, 2 February 2007 23:36 (eighteen years ago)

They need to release a singles compilation, there's a lot of earlier 7"s that are hard to find that are good. I've managed to find a few of them - The Return Of The Wood M'lady, My Pal Foot Foot and Come See The Duck. Return of the Wood has different songs on each channel, noisy stuff, it's cool. My Pal Foot Foot has a great poppy song called Sunny Forty Four on the B-side, and Come See The Duck is probably my favourite Deerhoof song.

I think Halfbird is my favourite pre-Reveille album.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 2 February 2007 23:52 (eighteen years ago)

Halfbird rules and is currently my favorite Deerhoof record. Recording is kinda cruddy (drums sound like cardboard, bass is both dead and loud), but the songs are just as good as those on the much more celebrated Apple O, Reveille & Milk Man.

the new sincerity (Pye Poudre), Monday, 5 February 2007 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

Come See The Duck is probably my favourite Deerhoof song

seconded.
