She was putting USED condoms in her pocket? Jeez. Throw them away. Throw them anywhere. DON'T PUT THEM IN YOUR POCKET.

I don't want him you can have him
He's not worth fighting for
Besides there's plenty more where he came from
I don't want him you can have him
I'm giving him the sack
And he can go right back where he came from
I'm afraid I never loved him
Sweetie he'd be better off with you
I could never make him happy

All I ever wanted to do was
Run my fingers through his curly locks
Mend his underwear and darn his socks
Fetch his slippers and remove his shoes
Wipe his glasses when he's read the news
Rub his forehead with a gentle touch
Mornings after when he's had a little too much
Kiss him gently when he cuddles near
And give him babies one for every year

So you see that I don't want him you can have him
You can have him cos I don't want him
Because he's not the man for me
Then I'd close the window while he soundly slept
Then I'd raid the icebox where the food is kept
I'd fix the breakfast that would please him most
Eggs and coffee some apricot juice and some buttered toast
Oh oh then I'd go out and buy the papers
And when they've been read spend the balance of the day in bed

So you see that I don't want him you can have him
You can have him cos I don't want him because he's not my man
I don't want him you can have him
You can have him I don't want him
You can have him I don't want him
Cos he's not the man for me

The lyrics to "The First Noel" have always annoyed me, even when i was a little kid at christmas mass. i guess it's more the fault of the melody, but it makes words sound so awful.

The First Noel, the Angels did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep
On a cold winter's night that was so deep.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the East beyond them far
And to the earth it gave great light
And so it continued both day and night.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

And by the light of that same star
Three Wise men came from country far
To seek for a King was their intent
And to follow the star wherever it went.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

This star drew nigh to the northwest
O'er Bethlehem it took its rest
And there it did both Pause and stay
Right o'er the place where Jesus lay.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

Then entered in those Wise men three
Full reverently upon their knee
And offered there in His presence
Their gold and myrrh and frankincense.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

Then let us all with one accord
Sing praises to our heavenly Lord
That hath made Heaven and earth of nought
And with his blood mankind has bought.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

From "Here Comes The Night" by Them:

"Why can't I accept the fact she's chosen him and simply let them be?"

If it were me, I'd have put "...and simply let ME be."

When somebody breaks your heart, you don't wanna give them too much credit! "She's chosen him and let me be" just sounds more sympathetic to the narrator's misery; "let THEM be" is like rubbing it in that the singer's been dissed. I dunno. All I know is that if I ever do a cover version of that tune, that lyric is gettin' a makeover.

Maybe I'm a fool, but...

what does "Papa was a Rodeo" mean?

Zachary Scott (Zach S), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 02:55 (eighteen years ago)

It meant he spent a lot of time at rodeos when he was growing up.

badg (badg), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 02:59 (eighteen years ago)

In fairness, its "I used to be a little boy/so old in my shoes" which gives a bit more context (the song being as it is about having to grow up way too fast due to his family being shitty).

As opposed to a jazz electric guitar, a country e.g., or a blues e.g.?

"Serpentine Fire" by Earth, Wind & Fire:

When I see youre face like the mornin sun you spark me to shine
Tell all the world, my need is fulfilled and thats a new design
As long as youre near, there is no fear of a victory
But when I'm away, influences stray my mind to disagree
I wanna see your face in the morning sun, ignite my energy
The cause and effect of you has brought new meaning in my life to me

Gonna tell a story morning glory all about the serpentine fire
Gonna tell a story morning glory all about the serpentine fire

Oh yeah oh yeah oh yeah, oh yeah oh yeah oh yeah
I need to see your face like the morning sun, ignite my energy
The cause and effect of you has brought new meaning in my life to me
The moments I find when I'm inclined to do my best
Negative wins when I give in and then I lose the test (not many times)

Gonna tell a story morning glory all about the serpentine fire
Surely as life begun, you will as one battle with the serpentine fire

Oh yeah oh yeah oh yeah, oh yeah oh yeah oh yeah
Surely as life begun, you will as one battle with the serpentine fire
Surely as life begun, you will as one battle with the serpentine fire
Gonna tell a story morning glory all about the serpentine fire

What the hell is this song supposed to be about? A drug? A person? God? At first I thought the "you" they're adressing is the "serpentine fire", but in the end they say "you" will battle with the serpentine fire. And why do they say "fear of a victory" instead of defeat? Maybe I shouldn't even try to make sense of these lyrics.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 11:01 (eighteen years ago)

classic soul/gospel duality. you = lover and/or god, while the serpentine fire represents romantic love and/or religious faith.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 11:06 (eighteen years ago)

But why would "you" battle with the serpentine fire then? And why is there "no fear of a victory" when "you" are near?

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 03:53 (eighteen years ago)

I actually like the original Them lyric a lot. It depicts to me a sense that the narrator knows that objectively the "mature" way to handle it would be to accept that it's over and move on, but can't because of deep emotional issues. And that draws me in to the character much more than the typical "she broke my heart, woe is me" type lyric.

Period period period (Period period period), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 04:44 (eighteen years ago)

"Amazing Grace"!!!

Now why would a singer want to insult themselves by singing "...that saved A WRETCH LIKE ME?"

Sweet Honey In The Rock, the acapella group, didn't like it either - they altered it to something like "...that set my spirit free."

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 04:51 (eighteen years ago)

xpost OTM. There's nothing confusing about that lyric. It's rather good.

It's a gospel song, genius. Subjugation of the self of a tenant of every major religion in the world.

"It's a gospel song, genius. Subjugation of the self of a tenant of every major religion in the world."

I don't give a flying rubber fuck. You can subjugate all you want to without putting a dunce hat on your head and calling yourself a "wretch." That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 05:07 (eighteen years ago)

I feel the weight of the world on my shoulder
As I'm gettin' older, y'all, people gets colder
Most of us only care about money makin'
Selfishness got us followin' in the wrong direction
Wrong information always shown by the media
Negative images is the main criteria
Infecting the young minds faster than bacteria
Kids act like what they see in the cinema
Yo', whatever happened to the values of humanity
Whatever happened to the fairness in equality
Instead in spreading love we spreading animosity
Lack of understanding, leading lives away from unity
That's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin' under
That's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin' down
There's no wonder why sometimes I'm feelin' under
Gotta keep my faith alive till love is found

The "Wretch" lyric.

Yeah, I never liked it. It made me think whoever wrote it was trying too hard. (I was going to call out bullshit but thought better of it)

From Gran Turismo:

Do you really think
that love is gonna save the world
Well I don't think so
Do you really think
that love is gonna save your soul
Well I sure hope so
I really hope so
But I don't think so
(from crappylyrics.com)

or even

I hang around
for another round
I'm hanging around
for another round
I'm hanging on
to the same old song
I hang around
for another round
Until something stops me

mmm, yes, the soothing honeylike sound of someone trying to rhyme "around" with "round" in Swenglish
