continue the Liks into King Tee. he's got a great song called 'On the Rox' off 'tha triflin' album' in which all the lyrics contain names of spirits, etc. All over the groovy sounds of Cymande's 'the message'

Kenickie's "60s Bitch" which sounds so not like what the title might have you believe.

nothing to do with drinking (well, not alcohol anyway) but a perfect hangover record is surely: Slayer - Reign In Blood.

DAGAGAGAGAGAADDA!! CRIMINALLY INSANE!!! DAGAGAGDDAGADAGDAGA!!

Wyndham Earl, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I forgot about George Thorogood, who's got at least a couple: I drink alone, one bourbon one scotch and one beer, probably some more.

bnw, Sunday, 7 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

martin, dude, you gotta make tapes for me & shit!
nath you wont get it in time for this hangover but maybe yr next one, the space dust CD i'm sending you has a good (say it myself hem-hem) song called "Too Much Action", it goes "i got shook up last night/must've spent all the rent/now i'm headin for hillsdale/gonna live in a tent". the alliteration in the 2nd line & the, ummm, assonance in the 3rd are very soothing.

unknown or illegal user, Sunday, 7 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hey & tell me about that rocket from the tombs dbl CD yeah?

unknown or illegal user, Sunday, 7 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oh i didn't read that guys list cos i have a crappy attention span, but here's my two contributions: "whiskey bottle" by uncle tupelo, and that gram parsons song with the line that goes "an empty bottle, a broken heart, and yr still on my mind." this thread is country's bitch.

di, Sunday, 7 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Absolute favorite: Dinah Washington - 'Drinking Again'

unknown or illegal user, Sunday, 7 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This one fits both categories:

Hangover by Serious Drinking (much beloved novelty punk/football 80s English band: template for early Loaded magazine some might say)

Jerry, Sunday, 7 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Noone has mentioned Gallon Drunk. Or maybe you have?
Dooraggedy, Rocket From The Tombs ist rad. Mainly for Peter Laughner's Aint It Fun and Life Stinks (which you can also find on that Take the Guitarplayer for a Ride)

nathalie, Sunday, 7 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I get to mention Stump again! "Alcohol" off A Fierce Pancake. It's very true.

OleM, Sunday, 7 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry, everything and everyone here is trumped by Max Eider's "Drink," recorded as a Jazz Butcher song. Utterly wonderful, endlessly singable.

Falling apart in bars
I like to suffer for my art
Just one more before we part

Don't want to think
About how much I drink
It's a habit that's out of control
Hope I never get dry before I get old.

Fear: MORE BEER! MORE BEER!

Jazz Butcher: "Soul Happy Hour":
"I get in a fury ( sung Fu-er-ee)
When I'm not in a brewery..

Whiskey Vodka Special Brew
All of this is good for you
Gin sling, Cointreau, brandy sour...
Blot right out! Soul happy hour! "

..Actually, most JBC songs are about drinking...

Best music for drinking? Hound Dog Taylor and the Houserockers without a doubt.

(Seems that way to me right now at least.)

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Saturday, 6 August 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

I like to beat hangovers out of me with loud punk rock & thrash. I just listened to "Alcohol" by Gang Green! I'm now cured. Well, I'm also drinking coffee with rum in it, that might have something to do with it. It is my birthday though, so I'm allowed.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 6 August 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that method works too. I think I'll listen to the Damned next.
red wine, beer, belfast bomber, whiskey, champagne...that was the sequence. ugh. Dragged meself to work on two hours "sleep". I'll let you know if the Damned works.

p.j. (Henry), Saturday, 6 August 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

New Order's "Get Ready" album's provisional title was "Fear Of A Hangover". I rather wished they'd kept it.

The Spiderwebbed Wilderness (Bimble...), Saturday, 6 August 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

SICK...OF BEING...SICK

Sunday Morning Coming Down
This was the first one I thought of, with the shocking-in-its-day gag line about "the beer I had for breakfast" the singing on TV of which was apparently a big deal at the time, but Johnny Cash managed to get away with it. Written by Kris Kristofferson, I believe. Official title apparently "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down."

Mention should also be made of the great Gary Stewart and his "Drinkin' Thing" ("I've got this drinkin' thing/ to keep from thinking things") and "She's Actin' Single (I'm Drinkin' Doubles)." Apparently if you are fussy enough to pronounce or write or type the final "g" in "-ing" endings, you haven't drunk enough.

The Diodes - "Tired of Waking up Tired" or somesuch title...

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Saturday, 6 August 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

I think it was the bit about "wishing Lord that I was stoned" that shocked conservative audiences most of all, but you're OTM, that beer I had for breakfast line is totally classic, especially when followed by "so I had another for desert".

To add to the Replacements drinking songs, what about Beer For Breakfast. "All I wanna do is eat them barbecue chips!"

Stew (stew s), Saturday, 6 August 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

You're right. Now that I think about it, at the time I was so little I didn't understand that other line.

Squeeze, "When The Hangover Strikes"

And you also remind me to mention

The Replacements, "If Only You Were Lonely."

k/l (Ken L), Saturday, 6 August 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

Bauhaus, "Hair of the Dog"! Kind of.

Any number of songs by Squeeze - they wrote a lot of them. It's really funny when you go through their discography too - their drinking songs start out portraying drinking as something carefree and fun, and then they get vastly darker, mirroring Chris Difford's own struggles with alcohol.
