2007 is shaping up to be a great year R&B-wise, with new albums slated to come out by Teedra Moses, Musiq, Bilal, Erykah Badu (!!!), Faith Evans, Amerie, Tweet, Jill Scott, Lloyd, Beyonce, and a bunch of others. Plus there are a bunch of cool debuts coming... most notably Chrisette Michele (who's on that new Jay-Z single and like 4 songs on the new Nas album) and Keri Hilson (a Timbaland protege who penned Omarion's "Ice Box" amongst other things).

The new Musiq single "Buddy" is AWESOME. Check it out:

Oh and a new Keyshia Cole album! How could I forget to mention her!

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 09:49 (eighteen years ago)

Can someone tell me about the Shareefa album? Teedra recommends it.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 10:11 (eighteen years ago)

It's really good. She's in the vein of Mary Blige and Keyshia Cole, a tough chick that may not be the best singer technically, but more than makes up for it in terms of soul/character. Very gritty... It's not anything groundbreaking, but it's good. I bought it for $10 and it was well worth it.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 10:23 (eighteen years ago)

What the Brainwasher said. There are four-five spectacular songs on that album.

The new Musiq single "Buddy" is AWESOME.

It doesn't do anything for me. The "Heartbeat" bassline deserves better.

Recently made a list of anticipated albums, and nearly all of the above-mentioned are on it -- Moses, Amerie, and Hilson are at/near the top. I'm hoping Hilson's album doesn't have more than a couple guest appearances.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 13:03 (eighteen years ago)

Beyonce is releasing a new album ? already ??

AleXTC (AleXTC), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 13:05 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah I had the same reaction. I think she should slow down, she's way overexposed.

(She's also releasing a Spanish album or something like that...)

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 13:07 (eighteen years ago)

hum. it's the shortest time between 2 albums from a rnb/pop star in a long while : around one year ?
that may be interesting and it follows her idea to make things more impulsive (like recording "b day" in a very short time).
also, isn't MJ supposed to release an album this year ? I'm still dreaming of one last great album from him...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 13:18 (eighteen years ago)

hum. it's the shortest time between 2 albums from a rnb/pop star in a long while : around one year ?

Well, there were like 8 months between the two Rihanna albums. Anyway I haven't heard anything about a new Beyonce album this year, as far as I know she's just re-releasing B'Day with some bonus tracks (a Shakira duet and some of the annoying outtakes I've been hearing on the radio lately like "Lost Yo Mind" and "Creole). But yeah, the Shareefa album is pretty good.

I'm kind of ready to hate Chrisette Michele just based on how annoying the choruses to "Lost One" and "Can't Forget About You" are.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i was about to mention rihanna - who is meant to have ANOTHER album out this year too.

i really like 'lost yo mind' and 'creole', no idea why these were left off b'day to start with.

anyone know anything about this r&b singer called mashonda? i've got this amazing track with snoop dogg called 'blackout', galloping club beats and awesome vocals (she does the same thing as nicole pussycat dolls does on the "i want a boy who can make MEEE!" line on 'buttonz'). wikipedia says she's swizz beatz's wife! and that 'blackout' is quite old and was a flop.

lex pretend (lex pretend), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:01 (eighteen years ago)

yeah Mashonda is Swizz's wife and is on her label and guested on a Cassidy single. "Back Of The Club" was kind of a decent single but I guess the album didn't do anything. Swizz was still trying to sweeten up his sound for R&B joints back then, though, if he starts giving her harsher beats like he did for Beyonce she might have some hot records.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

talking of harsh swizz beats the one he did for jojo, 'the way you do me', is awesome and would not sound out of place on b'day - impressively jojo carries it off too.

lex pretend (lex pretend), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

oh and AHH rumors says Swizz and Mashonda just had a baby. maybe that means she won't drop a new album yet this year.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:37 (eighteen years ago)

Oh another guy I forget to mention, Maxwell! He's got like 2 albums coming out this year. And Carl Thomas (remember him?)!

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

I dont know if anyone knows what he's doing this year, he released an album in '06 called on the Jungle Floor but Van Hunt is someone I've really been getting into lately.

I like the Shareefa songs I've heard, better check the album

need to get around to hearing the Ciara as well

had no idea that Hilson did "Icebox," that was easily the best track on the Omarion album. Omarion's shit was pretty good, some of the production seemed a little too generically soul looped.

Just got the new John Legend and I'm looking forward to hearing it.

But really I spent all weekend listening to Marvin's I Want You

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

Janelle Monae's "Lettin' Go"

haha deej i've spent the last two weeks listening to here, my dear which my friend tom had for eight months or so

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

(xpost) Jacko is working with Will.I.Am currently. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

every producer of the month has a grand plan to revive jacko
never happens

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

But really I spent all weekend listening to Marvin's I Want You

One of my absolute favorite, bury-me-with-a-copy albums of all-time.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

will.i.am... hum... that kinda ruins my high hopes for this album... maybe the next one !
about beyonce, is "bday" a commercial success eventually ? too bad there's not a new album this year, I kinda liked the idea of an album every 6months from a major artist... beatles'era style !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

yeah I'd say B'Day is a success, 2x platinum now and will probably eventually match her first album's 4x. I kind of like that her campaign for this album has been this barrage of a new single every 2 months or so instead of the industry standard 3 months (although "Irreplaceable"'s reign is rightfully continuing unabated even after the release of boring-ass "Listen"). I wish more big artists would do that, means less time to get really sick of a song.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

is that why she hasn't had time to get her ass over here to release 'ring the alarm'? bah. i hope we at least get 'upgrade u'.

lex pretend (lex pretend), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

There is a new Beyonce album this year!

Straight off of the hills of her career defining sophmore effort B-day, the inspiring Dreamgirl Beyonce, plans to release yet another album mid to late 2007. The multi Platinum, 9 time Grammy-award winning superstar announced during an interview with Reuters that she plans to create yet another banner year for 2007. After currently being nominated for 2 Golden Globe nominations, and preparing for a Summer world tour, the diva shows no signs of slowing."I've never been the type of person to not work" she explained. "Many artists release albums then go away for several years until releasing another one. I love to work because this is what I love to do." The newly acclaimed actress who has been hailed critical acclaim for her starring role in the film remake of the broadway musical Dreamgirls, also said that many of the songs on her third album will be leftovers from B-Day. "I'm looking to start writing new songs at the beggining of the year, then hopefully find time to record them in between dates of my world tour in the Spring." She explained. The singer also stated that she had many upcoming movies in the works, including a thriller about a dangerous woman who falls in love with an undercover cop. "I'm so exited." she exclaimed. " I never dreamed I would have so many opportunities to do what I love." The new album is expected to be released in the late Summer of 2007, along with production of her new movie starting later in the year with a release date of February 27, 2008

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

Well, the extreme of that policy being releasing ALL your singles at the same time (furtado's style).
haven't even heard "listen". It's true i'm still on "irreplaceable"... arguably my favourite track ever from her...ok, that's only after 2 albums... still...).

AleXTC (AleXTC), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

nice, that's the spirit, girl !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

ah, yeah, I had no idea she had announced a new album this year. go figure. Furtado released 3 singles to 3 different markets (U.S., Europe, Latin America) at once, though, in any one of those markets each single was rolled out one at a time, which is pretty common.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:41 (eighteen years ago)

you must be right. I don't know the details for each market. I just remember that she released 3 different singles at once and that was pretty confusing since I don't even know when things are released in my "market area". It's all just global internet news to me !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

'beyoncedaily.org'

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

well yeah, the internet confuses things like that a lot. blog people seemed to act like "Maneater" was as big as "Promiscuous" when in the U.S. the former was barely a blip on the radar compared to the latter.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

'shewhoshallnotbenameddaily.org'

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

exactly the reverse in the uk! 'promiscuous' did well but 'maneater' was a monster. (i prefer 'promiscuous', just - actually i prefer 'no hay igual' but wvs, that wasn't even a single here)

xp

lex pretend (lex pretend), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

the new amerie video is lots of fun btw. espionage and shooting and killer heels.

lex pretend (lex pretend), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

The video is cool, but I'm still not sold on the song. It really, really sucks that she and Rich Harrison had a falling out (he won't be producing anything on the new record).

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

well, her mixtape sounded pretty strong even without him - some great ideas there...

lex pretend (lex pretend), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

I like "That's What You Are" (the first song in the video), but I dunno... I'm hoping she can make it work without him. I liked the mixtape, but that was mostly her singing over the instrumentals of recent rap hits...

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

they had a falling out? I was never clear on that, whether she had a problem with him or just wanted to work with other producers for this album and be seen less like the puppet of a svengali or whatever.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

what's the new amerie video ?
about furtado : where is "say it right" a single then ?

"Take Control" :

http://youtube.com/watch?v=MIx2u4vBL1Q

I remember reading something about them falling out but I'm not sure... I just assumed so.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks for Amerie.
for Furtado, it seems "say it right" is a single here (Europe), too. seen the video on mtv the other day.

AleXTC (AleXTC), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

I've been obsessed with "Take Control" for the last few days.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

yo lex check for ll cool j & mashondas 'ghetto love' off swizz's album

and what (ooo), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

"i find him i forgive him i feed him"!

xp

will do. what is the swizz album like? obv never released over here

lex pretend (lex pretend), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

i also like mashonda's 'welcome to harlem' thing, i know the damian marley track was last year's 'in da club' standard which everyone had to have a go on but hers was pretty good

lex pretend (lex pretend), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

i want jaxon to recommend some things.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

swizzys album was aight- i remember the baby/yung wun cut is good, track with styles is classic of course, big business & the ridiculous 10-deep rapper/r&b singer remix were cool to hear on the radio

and what (ooo), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

tho i think im the only head who fucks with that ja rule/metallica joint

and what (ooo), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

Natasha's new shit with Darkchild is pretty incredible, even if she's forgettable. I'm liking the post-RHarrison steez he seems to be on.

Tweet's "Give It To Ya" is great

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 18 January 2007 07:12 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, "Hey Hey Hey" is very Rich Harrisson. I sort of wish Darkchild would've given that song to a more talented vocalist... I think Rihanna or Beyonce would've killed it.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 18 January 2007 12:59 (eighteen years ago)

That's not even it. She sounds like she's trying too hard to sound unprofessional.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 04:26 (eighteen years ago)

I was reading the EW cover story on her that keeps talking about her "raw and intense new vocal style," but yeah, it does kinda suck. It only really bothers me on "No One" and a couple other songs, though, it sounds a little more natural on the rest of the album.

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 04:56 (eighteen years ago)

All I know is her new "raw and intense new vocal style" sounds like ass. The second single isn't as totally unlistenable as "No One", though.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 05:02 (eighteen years ago)

i just said this on teenpop, but unfortunately, she listened to too much Keyshia Cole.

Tape Store, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 05:10 (eighteen years ago)

OTM

The Reverend, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 05:12 (eighteen years ago)

Actually her vocal on "No One" makes much more sense on the reggae remix. In that context it sounds a bit Tanya Stephens-ish, the harshness = humannness.

Agree it's bizarre on the original though.

Tim F, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 07:25 (eighteen years ago)

The-Dream's album is INCREDIBLE. Like, "WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL OF MY LIFE?!?" incredible. Everyone should go buy it.

The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

REally? That good Brainwasher? I really liked "Falsetto" and "Livin' A Lie" was okay, but I didnt' know if the eh, eh, ehs would grow tiresome.

matt2, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

"Falsetto" is awful. Fuck that guy.

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 18:23 (eighteen years ago)

anyone heard the Blige album? It's a punchier The Breakthrough. I've learned to really like "Just Fine."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 18:32 (eighteen years ago)

Alex you are insane.

matt- There are lots of "ehs" and "ellas" and "ooohs" and "AYYs" and "woos", but they actually aren't annoying or grating at all. They add to the atmosphere - in most of the spongs there's lots of weird litte things goin on with the production, and The-Dream's layered vocals and vocoders and other effects meld nicely to create this really cool sound. I suck at writing about music, so yeah.. just check it out it's a really strong record front-to-back.

Alfred- I really like Growing Pains (even moreso than The Breakthrough), there isn't like an obvious standout like "Baggage" or "No One Will Do" but it has a cool sound.. "Roses" is one of her best songs in a while.. "Feel Like A Woman", "Hurt Again," "Fade Away" "Smoke"...

The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

And it works better as an full album (besides "Grown Woman" and "Work That).. there's a cohesive, snythy washed out sound to it..

The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

"Come To Me (Peace)" is very U2.

The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

Alex will probably hate it since The-Dream wrote about 10 songs on it.

The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 18:51 (eighteen years ago)

well, as I said upthread, "'Just Fine' is the only reason he isn't dead to me," so maybe I'd like his other songs with Mary. I really can't stand his voice, though, and for the most part he seems really lyrically and musically limited. even the whole sex noise schtick on "Falsetto" was already done by Trey Songz on that Twista single a couple years ago.

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

Roses: http://youtube.com/watch?v=UpXlJoB8jX8

I think he's a really good lyricist actually, he has pretty interesting/quirky takes on over-done subjects. But if you can't take the voice I can understand that.. I think it's great!

The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

well it was always the case that any brutally reasonable person would make light work of tearing thedream to pieces; 'falsetto' is that bad (just str8 terrible) the guy's prince delusions are ridiculous, he sounds and acts like i dunno, the creep from galaxy high copping a bitter little attitude, and just generally the whole vibe is completely thin and banal. however, i have kept coming back to the album a fair bit this last week, and can only conclude that that banality is part of the attraction somehow. ("WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL OF MY LIFE?!?" = he was the dishwater, in your sink) (too easy) it is not even as though i can particularly claim any one song to be a resounding success - even the notionally interesting, conflicted stuff like 'nikki' seems so clearly laid out as to seem careless and tossed-off rather than victim to any real sort of heartbreak or anything.

weird though, cos i can also imagine him to have written 'roses', and that pretty much blows everyone else (certainly your keyshias and jill scotts) out of the water when it comes to heavyweight emotion business. guess it could just be the voice, or the delivery at very least.

r|t|c, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 20:24 (eighteen years ago)

really enjoyed the mjb record the couple times i've heard it, anyway.

ps is it really such a mystery why there's no buzz for mario? he grew into an ugly young man with silly nostrils, ne-yo basically jacked 'let me love you' for his career jump-off, he fell off the radar but not quite far enough off the radar so there weren't what felt like years of tentative leaked first singles, the songs that did make the final cut are pretty indistinct... i could go on

i mean i know chris brown's made much the same mistakes and managed to scrape it (i think? how's he selling?) but he then did dance his little feet off all year. (also, a t-pain single.)

r|t|c, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

There's a screwed and chopped version of "Falsetto" by DJ Black Boi which is a gazillion times better than the original.

Tim F, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

see, while i would normally say that bringing up a screwed & chopped rmx is a social faux pas on a par with using the fish knife to gouge your host's eye out, this 'falsetto' one is quite good cos the d:ream's voice sounds half-normal now all pitched down. good stuff!

he sounds quite fun when he guest sings/raps on ladies' tunes. for years i wondered, who is nivea and rasheeda's new lesbian friend?

r|t|c, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

*smh*

anyway this new janet song is really hot.

The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

so is the new LeToya song, though I wish it had more LeToya on it. Why does a 3 minute song need 3 guest rappers?

letoya still on that queen of houston bullshit when her best song is a classic just blaze beat. there is nothing good about that new tune.

janet on the britney train, oh dear.

r|t|c, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

letoya reminds me that i didn't mind big kuntry's new single feat trey 'cheaper than lloyd' songz

http://www.zshare.net/audio/5116057d9e0820/

it is somehow much better than the timbahandz biting it betrays?

r|t|c, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

lol "cheaper than lloyd"

it's funny 'cuz it's true.

The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

omg those janet comments are hilarious. as for the song, it's good but that's about it. it is pretty fuckin britney.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 22:56 (eighteen years ago)

it feels like she's trying too hard to sound like something else. i just read something about how the hype will be that she's the competition for the new mariah and beyonce records. and just the sound + the sound of her voice come off rather contrived to me.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 23:00 (eighteen years ago)

ironically you could have said the exact same about her rank hype single before the last album - 'lookout weekend' cover i think?

r|t|c, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

or Call On Me or whatever the fuck that was called

Surmounter, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 23:02 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, 'u got what i need' is great (if that's the one you're referring to). shame that they fucked it up for the album

xpost

dbs, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 23:03 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, this is pretty much janet's last shot so it does come off as a bit desperate.. but I think this song will do well as a warm-up, the second single has to be HOT HOT HOT. LA Reid exec-produced the album and there is going to be a really big push so I think she'll pull it off. Hopefully MTV is no longer boycotting her and the song has a great video...

The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

and yeah I'd rather the britney train than whatever train she was on when she thought "call on me" was a good idea.

The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

what was that song that started with a sample of some old school rNb female voice singing "boy" a few times, that's the one that -- i mean it sounded good and all, but just so canned

Surmounter, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 23:06 (eighteen years ago)

i'll find the title

Surmounter, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 23:07 (eighteen years ago)

'u got what i need', that's the one.

janet is pretty much in a no-win situation these days no? 20 yo wasn't all bad really, ppl just got mad irritated by that 'rockit' horror straight away. 'do it 2 me' was great, 'take care' was lovely, even the nelly/jd song is still pleasant. i heard worse albums that year.

wonder what polow would do with her (that he hasn't already done with ciara).

r|t|c, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

oh haha i forgot it was called 'call on me' while you guys were slamming it

i like it!

here's do it 2 me btw

yeah i actually don't mind "call on me" all that much -- what i meant to cite was "u got what i need," which is so easy to like, but still missed for me.

i guess she is in a no-win thing. i just wish she'd stop trying to BE 20 years old and go for a more mature sound. i mean talking about menstrual flow in a song IS kind of weird, no?

what do you mean by mature though? like what "mature" direction could she possibly go in while reamining commercially viable?

nope wrong again -- what i was actually talkin bout WAS "do it 2 me." i just clicked on that link.

i LIKE it, but i still don't completely feel the need to put it on. it's like trying to be too hot

right, thx, i hav no idea what "u got what i need" is. hehe

well... to be fair, i haven't heard albums, only singles. from th singles, i want a little more harmony, lush texture stuff and a little less sexy spring chicken stuff.

90s janet remained more fun and bubbly than badass and dirty, which i liked.

Saying "Janet" and then "LaToya" made me think you were talking about LaToya Jackson. I was quite WTF.
