was going 2 research a list in order to comprise this genre coined by abbie hoffman. i wz thinking some dylan, uh . . . burroughs over cobaine; maybe cobaine's moist vagina (yeah i said it what), another burroughs track, something real creepy; on an off-brand note Barr off killrockstars - this song is the single http://www.rvcaclothing.com/, maybe cut that one. basically list all the songs you can think where it's just talking stagy or in your indoor voice, shouting sometimes. maybe some, i dunno, i might be lacking in my knowledge of heroin-addled music, uh, i'm sure there are some more indie fuxx who did had off-brand moments. more rockers need to talk e-z. too many people remind me of cheeseball tenors out of some old post-vaudville schtick. what dylan songs? maybe some bo diddly, that would be rite. maybe some movie exerpts-- all i want to hear is someone talking over music instead of singing, yknow?

richard wood johnson (rwj), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 00:59 (nineteen years ago)

Well, there's Lou Reed and his disciples. Patti Smith. Rich Stim (MX-80 Sound) was a master of recitation. George Clinton too, in a lot of Parliament and Funkadelic tracks. And I guess you gotta throw in Gil Scott-Heron too, and etc. (And don't be telling me those guyz weren't "ROCK"!)

Might be interesting to explore which of these folks relied such an approach because they "couldn't sing" and which ones COULD sing but just preferred to talk. And whether such non-singing actually becomes a form of singing, etc.

There's this band called the Enablers. They're on Neurosis' label, and they sound kind of like Slint + Ken Nordine. V. enjoyable easy listening.
