pretty badass record! rhythm section is mixed really strongly; it's a meatier and groovier focus than before. not as explicitly postpunky as celebration castle but not as garagey as laced with romance either. i think they have my some of my favorite-sounding guitars of the last few years.

so far i'm particularly enjoying "double vision," which was a total grower (big difference between listening on my computer speakers and listening on a decent speakers, where the you get the bass and the drums), "small talk" and "pickpocket song."

anyone else heard it/anticipating?

How would you say the departure of Ian Adams has affected the sound? Is there still a pop influence to the band, or did he take that with him?

They're one of the best live bands I've had the chance to see in recent years, and I absolutely adore their first record. So count me in the anticipating group.

well, i'd be lyin if i said that i'm glad ian's gone. i always loved his songs and he helped ensure that things didn't get too monochromatic, but i think they've figured out how to play together interestingly enough that even with the one dude singing and writing everything the songs aren't too samey.

i haven't figured out where to place this one in my rankings yet, but right now i'm willing to say it's not a disappointment.

there's still definitely a pop element, although nothing as explicitly bouncy as "i'm with you." cool-sounding riff percentage is at an all-time high though, which is a tradeoff i'm generally comfortable with.
