Except from Fugazi/Evens/other fugazi members projects.
i've just saw the review of "The aquarium" album in pfrk, never heard of them, and also never heard:
"soccer team"
"channels"
"french toast"
etc

any good?

emekars (emekars), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

I read that review earlier too. My first thought was: 10 years ago Ian would have made Jeff release this on Adult Swim instead.

As for the bands you list? Channels is J Robbins' new(ish) band. I haven't heard them either, but they're probably not as good as Burning Airlines (who in turn weren't as good as Jawbox).

And French Toast is Fugazi-affiliated, though having not heard any of their stuff, I can't vouch for their quality.

I'm sure others can fill you in better.

"Dischord Surprised by Lack of Reviews" Washington City Paper Dec. 8th piece by Jessica Gould at bottom of link

an excerpt:
Charles Aaron, music editor at Spin, however, says that in an era of CD- and cyber-saturation, a publicist has to be a little more aggressive. “And if there’s a band on Dischord that an editor’s not initially enthusiastic about, and then the editor gets no communication from a publicist about it, there’s a chance it might slip through the cracks,” he writes in an e-mail. Soccer Team must have fallen through Spin’s cracks, for example, since a search for the band on the magazine’s Web site only yields articles about the World Cup and sneakers. Or perhaps Dischord didn’t send Spin a CD to review. Several reviewers contacted by the City Paper, including Aaron, said they weren’t on Dischord’s mailing list.

Josh Jackson, editor-in-chief of Paste, wrote in an e-mail, “I have a ton of respect for what Dischord has done over the last 25 years.… But it’s unrealistic to expect national stories on low-profile bands because the competition is fierce.”

On Dec. 4, Bourgeois circulated a second e-mail, promising to be a little more outgoing. He decided to ditch the hard-to-get attitude, and promised “to check in on a more individual basis and make sure you have the materials you need.”

curmudgeon (DC Steve), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 15:19 (nineteen years ago)

I am probably the biggest Dischord defender on ILM (i.e. I fucking love everything from Vile Cherubs to Branch Manager), but it has been a REALLY patchy few years for the label... it's very probably for the best that they haven't had reviews of their latest output.

RE: the first post, French Toast is Jerry Busher (aka 2nd Fugazi drummer) and James Canty (Nation of Ulysses/Ted Leo rx)... it's not my favorite. Soccer Team is the singer/guitar player from Most Secret Method, who were a Dischord/Slowdime band a few years ago.

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, it really speaks volumes that, aside from like Lungfish and a couple younger bands, almost every Dischord release for the past few years has been offshoots of Dischord bands from 5-10 years ago. That's not always a bad thing (I particularly liked Medications and the last Evens album), and I have no idea if there's some wonderful new generation of D.C. bands that Dischord missed out on, but it's kind of hard to generate excitement about all these side projects and solo records by aging lifers (that Joe Lally album, ugh). I personally hate the whole phenomenon of constant e-mail blasts by indie publicists, so I respect Dischord for sticking to their guns, but not playing that game means they're just gonna keep getting pushed further out of the way by new blood (which isn't necessarily a given, considering the continued success of, say, Merge).

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

"almost every Dischord release for the past few years has been offshoots of Dischord bands from 5-10 years ago."

thats how Christopher M. True from allmusic sees it:

"It may seem too easy to constantly talk about how Dischord has changed over the last few releases, that since Fugazi went on hiatus or on break, but it's almost too hard not to. The brilliant low-key efforts of the Evens, the multi-faceted French Toast, Soccer Team, J Robbins revitalization with Channels — it's all notable. And with the debut from the duo The Aquarium, a new aspect is added to the label's recent development."

mikei (emekars), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

i dug q and not u

that guy is called ris paul ric now or something and it's not too good.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

haha yeah that guy has some thing called Rubber Bullets that's all indie rock/Baltimore club mashups

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

Q and Not U is now split into:

Singer/Guitarist #1: Ris Paul Ric (Tim Hecker produced indie folk weirdness)/Rubber Bullets (Baltimore Club/Indie Rock mashup thing)
Singer/Guitarist #2: President (good, dirty electro stuff)
Drummer: Now singer/guitarist in Georgie James (very good 70s-style power pop group)

None of which are on Dischord.

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

Ris Paul Ric is Chris Richards. I have not heard his music since Q and not U, but I like his reviews of music for the Washington Post and City Paper--he's all over the map--hiphop mixtapes, avante-rock, r'n'b...Maybe he's lurking here!

curmudgeon (DC Steve), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

The "20 Years of Dischord" box-set pretty much sums up what's great about the label. (Though it's still not a patch on peak-period SST.)

I have to give another thumbs up to Q And Not U. Different Damage is one of my favourite records from the past few years (shame about the dodgy mix, however - the levels are all over the place).

MacDara Conroy (MacDara), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

i heard georgie james this weekend, pretty good stuff.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

Having heard they are shopping their album to labels, it's not possibly going to Matador, is it? That would be excellent.

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

Q And Not U were genius. No Kill No Beep Beep is one of the best guitardriven postcore records I ever heard.

Also, I really dug Shudder To Think when they were still on Dischord. And of course the Nation Of Ulysses and Rites Of Spring stuff.

Marty Innerlogic (marty innerlogic), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

"almost every Dischord release for the past few years has been offshoots of Dischord bands from 5-10 years ago."

If that's a dis, it's kind of odd if you look at the first four years or so of the label, and to a lesser extent its whole history. I think if there's a common reason for a downturn it's the fact that all these people are self-consciously trying to move away from the stuff that they did on the label before (which started with, like, Rites of Spring but even so).

"Baltimore Club/Indie Rock mashup thing" makes me intrigued but kind of scared.

Feargal Hixxy (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

richards is a very entertaining writer; i always enjoy his stuff. georgie james is definitely worth keeping an ear out for. it's like the best 70's am pop never to grace a transistor radio's speakers. strong live show, too.

ZR (teenagequiet), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

yeah I'm not really dissing, I mean you can't decry a label for being insular and inbred when their whole reason for existence is to document one city's scene. but still, you can't address the label's diminishing profile when almost every new band's fanbase is a smaller subset of the members' previous band's fanbase. (xpost)

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 17:03 (nineteen years ago)

oops, the "when" in that last sentence should be more like "without acknowledging that"

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

Having heard they are shopping their album to labels, it's not possibly going to Matador, is it? That would be excellent.

i doubt anyone else here has ever heard 'em. but beyond that, it wouldn't be my place to say anyway.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

aw, i like chris.

i liked the joe lally album too, but maybe that's just nostalgia on my part. still haven't heard the new evens.

acid waffle house (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

the Lally album has its moments but I honestly could barely listen to it after I realized how much his voice reminds me of Squiggy from Laverne & Shirley

lol the other night when I had this epiphany i had to find the Garfield Christmas Special on YouTube (Jon's brother Doc Boy is voiced by Squiggy) to confirm it

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 17:25 (nineteen years ago)

haha i'm just glad you didn't say "on dvd"

acid waffle house (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 17:27 (nineteen years ago)

to be totally honest for a second I thought I might have it on DVD but then I remembered it was the Charlie Brown holiday specials DVD that I got for Christmas a few years ago :(

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

Some of the music on the Lally cd sounds like skeletal frameworks for Fugazi tracks. I can't decide if that's good or bad.

I wish the Evens effort had catchier melodies, although it has some energy to it that almost compensates.

curmudgeon (DC Steve), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

yeah that's the problem I guess when guys go solo who probably wouldn't have gone solo if the band didn't go on a long hiatus -- stuff kinda sounds like "this would be a badass Fugazi bassline" but there's nothing else going on around it. the first Evens album aged poorly for me but so far I'm liking the new one a lot more.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

Hoover - The Lurid Traversal Of Route 7 (Just listened to it a few days ago actually)

Oh and of course Jawbox and Fugazi..

Sir Echo (Sir Echo), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

If Dischord's latest string of releases hasn't been top-notch, it certainly hasn't been any worse than 99% of the schmindie that DOES get reviewed heavily in the national rock press. If the only excuse is "the other publicists are yelling at me more," that's sort of a sad commentary on music journalism.

At the same time, I guess if it's just the way things are, Dischord has to cave to it to some extent if they want to remain *relevant*

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

Jess, how many promos do you get per week?

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

um, not many actually, and hardly anything anyone would actually want. (lots of touring pop-punk and metal bands on tiny labels, etc.) (though i did get the last batch of dischord stuff.)

acid waffle house (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

There were also the two Black Eyes releases in 2002 and 2004. That band didn't have any of the usual Dischord suspects and their second record, Cough, was quite good and slept on, I think, because the band broke up before they could tour in support of it. Still, it seems Dischord is conservative about who they sign, and other notable DC bands of late have gone elsewhere. Eg. Dead Meadow is on Matador, Measles Mumps Rubella was on Troubleman and then moved from DC to NYC, etc. Also, French Toast (along with the Capital City Dusters) are completely unlistenable.

Emmett_Stinson (Emmett_Stinson), Thursday, 18 January 2007 23:38 (nineteen years ago)

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 19 January 2007 02:57 (nineteen years ago)

That group is awful. I saw them play some bbq back when they were called Cactus Patch. Just terribe--winning WHFS's best unsigned band award was clearly a dubious honor. There have been other good bands in DC over the last several years but most of them don't have that "DC sound." Also, no one has mentioned either the Crown Hate Ruin or the Make Up, both classic 90s Dischord bands.

Emmett_Stinson (Emmett_Stinson), Friday, 19 January 2007 05:55 (nineteen years ago)

lol army of me

i dug (and still do, pretty much) antelope, who are like one of the only dc bands left to still sound dischordy albeit in a very refined way. most of the bands around here worth paying attention to now don't really sound anything like trad-dischord groups.

BED MAKER S/T
OUT 5/1
ON DISCHORD RECORDS
LISTEN TO NEW SONG "BALLAD OF TOKITAE"
https://bedmakerdc.bandcamp.com/track/ballad-of-tokitae(can also pre-order there)

Bed Maker's origins date back to summer 2019, when bassist Arthur Noll (Light Beams, Kid
Congo Powers) and drummer Vin Novara (The Crownhate Ruin, 1.6 Band), each having played
in Alarms & Controls, invited guitarist Jeff Barsky (Insect Factory, Time Is Fire) to collaborate
and see what might happen. By autumn, they invited Amanda MacKaye (Desiderata,
Routineers) to join them, and the chemistry was immediate. In February 2020 at DC's Rhizome,
Bed Maker played their first show and then paused their activities the following month, as did
most people.

Due to the state of the world in 2020 and 2021, they continued writing music through sharing
recordings. Mike Schleibaum assisted by assembling home recordings of their individual parts
into working demos. This allowed them to keep momentum, and by the time in-person
rehearsals resumed, a handful of songs and new ideas were close to fruition. Bed Maker
resumed playing shows in November 2022.

Following a self-released digital single ("Miss Dickens") and an EP (Three on the Tree) -- each
recorded with Schleibaum and Matt Michel at Viva Studios -- Bed Maker began work on their
self-titled LP in May 2023 with Ian MacKaye and Don Zientara at the original Inner Ear Studio in
his basement in Arlington, VA, and with Mike Schleibaum at his home studio in Maryland.
That their debut LP even exists is only possible thanks to the support of family and many
friends, and also serves as an act of defiance to the horrors of the last four-plus years.

This is totally righteous and funky. There's definitely a bit of Ad-Rock to the vocals which overall makes me imagine the record as the kind of thing the Beasties might have done if they'd done a post-hardcore record for Dischord in the late-90s. But there's much more to it than that: the dubby stuff, the Haitian influences...

Weeks ago, I journeyed it to DC in order to work on a great project. Ian MacKaye and I went to Inner Ear Studios, where we made our first records decades ago and mixed a four song session with the great Don Zientara at the board. This is the same studio, where the Teen Idles, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, and many others recorded. It was amazing to be back there with Ian and Don. Part way through the mix, none other than Eddie Janney, he of the Untouchables, Rights Of Spring, One Last Wish, Happy Go Licky, Skewbald and other great bands joined us. The session benefited greatly by his presence. As to the tracks, I had them mastered several days ago, and I’m now working on the layout and design for the record. When it’s ready, I’ll let you know. We are extremely excited by this one.

guessing this is an archival thing that Rollins & Ian are producing or mixing

you guessed right, it's a 1979 demo by a "legendary punk band", doesn't say which though: https://www.henryrollins.com/on-the-radio-all/2025/11/7/radio-broadcast-866-11-0725

Thinking since Eddie Janney was there with Ian and Henry that it was an Untouchables tape from 79 as Janney was in that dc group.

I saw Ian in October doing a book talk with John R Davis about his new dc punk zines book, at a local dc bookstore. Tomorrow Ian is chatting onstage at the MLK Library in DC with Brian Baker ( Minor Threat, Dagnasty , Bad Religion) about his new photo book the Road.

um ok, Rollins initial tease was IMO deliberately misleading.

To continue the pointless speculation, I don't think it is the Untouchables becuz if was I would imagine Dischord would release it and this is going to be via 2.13.61/In the red so I am going a guess it is a very early Gun Club demo?

challopvious (sleeve), Monday, 10 November 2025 15:50 (two months ago)

chr1sb3singer, Monday, 10 November 2025 15:52 (two months ago)

I am going to stick with the Untouchables as my guess but we will see
