Brave New Waves (as we know it): RIP

They're restructuring CBC Radio 2 to add more kinds of music to the schedule, therefore shoving Brave New Waves to the side. I've grown up with this show literally and figuratively, and despite what we think of it in these last few years, it's still the end of an era. Comments?

Jacqueline May (oldskool1), Thursday, 18 January 2007 01:08 (nineteen years ago)

Um, mod might want to retitle? There used to be an ILX poster named bnw.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 18 January 2007 01:44 (nineteen years ago)

It was to be expected. Ever since Radio 3 was condemned to Satelite radio during the summer of 05', BNW had no idea how long they would last. With its terrestrial existance now done, it'll prolly end up as part of the R3 channel..

kuma (kumabear), Thursday, 18 January 2007 01:48 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, didn't know that, jaymc... whoops

Jacqueline May (oldskool1), Thursday, 18 January 2007 02:00 (nineteen years ago)

That is indeed sad news, Patti Schmidt was so cool. Does anybody have the cut-up of her vocal flubs and umms and ahhs and ahems that Vicki Bennett / People Like Us made? That should get a link on this thread, for sure.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Thursday, 18 January 2007 02:39 (nineteen years ago)

i wanted to marry patti schmidt when i wz a teen

xpost oops should not have written "was so cool" as if Patti is not alive anymore or something, my mistake.

Here are more details on CBC Radio's "restructuring":

Great host - also dug her 90s band Pest 5000.

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Thursday, 18 January 2007 03:22 (nineteen years ago)

Patti Schmidt was a terrific host (with a great late-night voice), but I actually miss the Brent Bambury days more. His time on the show in the early-90s introduced me to some of my all-time favourite bands.

a. begrand (a begrand), Thursday, 18 January 2007 03:48 (nineteen years ago)

Brent Bambury era BNW: Absolute classic.

Three hundred inches from the children. (goodbra), Thursday, 18 January 2007 06:12 (nineteen years ago)

I second that, though Patti has done a fine job hosting despite the budget cuts and all. But, I do think Brave New Waves may be best remembered for Brent's days. Those were pretty damn memorable.

Jacqueline May (oldskool1), Thursday, 18 January 2007 07:33 (nineteen years ago)

Drew, I don't have the Vicki Bennett recording, but, if you haven't already heard it, the Books did something similar with Patti's voice on the last track of "The Lemon Of Pink".

gnippiks (gnippiks), Thursday, 18 January 2007 07:39 (nineteen years ago)

I'm from the Patti generation (only started listening in earnest after Brent left), so all this sidelining of Patti is making me upset.

Tell me, did Brent ever play hip-hop or techno on the show?

What I loved about (Patti-era) Brave New Waves was the huge diversity of music played and the sense that Patti and her crew were really into all of it.

Sadly, I don't get the same sense of breadth from any of the Radio 3 hosts or even any of the new BNW substitute hosts...

gnippiks (gnippiks), Thursday, 18 January 2007 07:50 (nineteen years ago)

Tell me, did Brent ever play hip-hop or techno on the show?

He never shied away from it (except for hip hop, I don't recall hearing much of that), I remember first learning about stuff like jungle, trip hop, and such from that show, but there was definitely stronger emphasis on indie rock than when Schmidt took over. Made plenty of sense, too, cos indie rock was just exploding at the time, as did the move toward more eclectic stuff in the show's later years.

a. begrand (a begrand), Thursday, 18 January 2007 08:05 (nineteen years ago)

Brent Bambury has him some muscles.
It's weird to see CBC talking about going after a younger audience and meaning people in their mid-40s.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 18 January 2007 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

This was such an important thing for so many people. Really sad to hear it disappear. I remember meeting someone in Ottawa, working in music policy at the federal government (and my age), who basically had his life changed by BNW. Growing up in rural SK he stumbled on this weird latenight sounds, stayed up all night most nights, listening. and then moved east to help foster stuff exactly like this.

anyway.

in honour of Ms Schmidt (who is the host of my era), i will now put on that track by The Books where she appears.

rip

Tell me, did Brent ever play hip-hop or techno on the show?

Brent introduced me to NWA. I dunno about techno, since I wasn't paying attention for that. He did play a lot of electronic music, though.

Three hundred inches from the children. (goodbra), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

how amazing would it be if they released the archives as podcasts...either all at once, or maybe one every day. I'm pretty sure there are a bunch of legal and bureaucratic reasons against doing this.

I've only heard schmidt-era BNW, but I'd love to hear more. RIP :(

And for you people who can't get enough of patti schmidt's voice, she hosts a quebec culture magazine called "Cinq à six" on saturdays at 5pm on Radio 1.

I do remember that Brent did play some hip-hop, but he really got into the techno, especially as it was blowing up in the late 80s, I remember him doing a whole segment about the history of techno probably around late '91. That was incredible. And since this show is essentially out of here anyway, Let me offer to all of you a few of MY personal favorite recollections of this nocturnal juggernaut, and please feel free to share some of yours, we've got nothing to lose now anyway:

rip. among other things, brent b got me to stop being so myopic about prince when sign o the times came out. i can also partially thank bnw for my sleep deprivation in high school. here's to podcasts and digital archiving and the like. may save some grades.

boyant (Boyant), Thursday, 18 January 2007 22:40 (nineteen years ago)

Hopefully there will be something good to take its place. Was a good show.

Sundar (sundar), Thursday, 18 January 2007 22:51 (nineteen years ago)

For those of you who hope that the show would become a podcast (myself included)...well, read this:

Guess this really IS the end. Wow.

Jacqueline May (oldskool1), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 06:30 (eighteen years ago)

I too grew up in Saskatchewan; listening to BNW in the mid to late 80s was the first place I heard stuff like Black Flag and "paid in full" and spotlight segments on Butthole Surfers.
Great show.

I have been listening to the Patti Schmidt hosted version for a couple of years lately since working the graveyard shift,it was the best bet for interesting listening around here.
This show will be missed.
BNW RIP

loved the show so much as i kid that i just called up Patti one day and asked her for a job. and she was like "yeah, sure."

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

haha... i did two very naive, early-20s appearances, recorded on ISDN from CBC Windsor in the early '00s. can send you MP3s if you like, tho i cringe at the thought of having to listen to them :)

that's so taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 18:34 (eighteen years ago)

Sucks. I have fond memories of late-night trips to Kinko's to make flyers with BNW as the soundtrack.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

Not that I'd been able to listen to it for a while - but this makes me very sad.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

I used to love listening to BNW on late-night drives. The show introduced me to an incredible amount of music that, as a small-town boy, I would never have otherwise been exposed to.
And I think I still have a Pest 5000 album.

Binjominia (Brilhante), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

Definitely AW. One of the influences on Detroit electronic music that doesn't get credited nearly often enough is the influence of Canadian media. When I think of Detroit radio, I think of driving around late at night listening to the radio and switching between Liz Copeland and Patti Schmidt.

Up north, you don't realize how culturally unique it is to be able to hear those kind of sounds on the radio. While I didn't like everything played, being able to hear left field electronic music, or just left field music in general on the radio was a pretty big deal.

I haven't heard the show in years, but it is one of the things that I have extremely fond memories of. That show had a very large place in my life.

fuck, maybe i'll just post 'em then, so everyone can laugh... gimme a couple days.

that's so taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 22:04 (eighteen years ago)

and hey Aaron W! if i recall, long before we became friends, i first heard your old band on BNW!

that's so taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 22:21 (eighteen years ago)

Damn. . . I myself was wondering what was going on, with listening to it the last few night, not having heard a new episode in some time. I think I fell in love with Patti Schmidt's voice also. Seriously what a terrific show, in every which way.

Thomas Mehlt (Tokyo Ghost Stories), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

I knew something was up when they started the "1 hr of new, three of old" thing, because when they do the rerun, I noticed that the profile segment's chopped off. "No profile?!" I knew something was f-ed up then and there. Speaking of which, I think I'll post one of my favorite profiles/interviews on here in the next few days, since much of my archive is now on my MP3 player (for the commute to and from work). I love it if you guys do the same, since chances are the CBC is probably so cheap they won't bother with a proper "archival" tribute themselves come March by the sound of things.

Jacqueline May (oldskool1), Monday, 29 January 2007 04:47 (eighteen years ago)

what a bummer. i don't listen to it so much these days, but i have so many great memories of discovering amazing stuff on it. and patti schmidt's voice was always kinda sexy.

La Monte (La Monte), Monday, 29 January 2007 04:55 (eighteen years ago)

By the way, if you guys are seriously pissed about it, I highly suggest you let the CBC know how you feel. Maybe it won't change anything, maybe it will, you never know. But if The Waves are important to you in any way shape or form, here are the ways you can let them know:

one month passes...
Well, it's less than a week now.... and this will be the LONGEST week of my life, for sure. Some of you will probably agree with me. One upside is that one of the guest hosts, Jarrett Martineau is planning to start a podcast with the same kind of experimental stuff we've come to know and love on Brave New Waves. More details are on his blog:

http://jarrett.vox.com/

I did like his stint on the show, so I'll give it a chance whenever it drops. How about you? Also, since this is THE FINAL WEEK (technically), what will we miss most about this show? For me, the overall atmosphere. It was welcoming, no matter who you are or where you came from. If you listen in for the first time, and you give the music and musicians a chance, you're part of "the secret club". I can't get that anywhere else these days.

As far as I can tell, The Signal is the closest contemporary equivalent to Brave New Waves? It offers a 24/7 online stream, which so far seems more pop-oriented than the radio programs I've listened to. Via CBC Music, there are some online streaming channels for contemporary classical or jazz etc.

I'm honestly not sure what to make of the Nightstream/Rich Terfry sorts of programs on the current Radio 2. It's not clear to me what they're even going for in terms of a public broadcasting mission, although I'll freely acknowledge that I sometimes found them more enjoyable than actual commercial pop music radio when I was in Regina.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 23 March 2014 11:13 (eleven years ago)

I mean, at least on the Strombo Show, you can get an interesting/surprising mix of things.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 23 March 2014 11:22 (eleven years ago)

right. i rarely listen to radio 2 but when i do i find it to be really dull radio and as a dedicated cbc 1 listener when cbc's music programming trespasses on radio 1 it's never great, tim tamashiro and randy bachman's vinyl tap....................

dylannn, Sunday, 23 March 2014 19:15 (eleven years ago)

It used to be a really good station! Brave New Waves and Two New Hours were both fantastic and had really loyal listeners. I don't even necessarily object to them scaling back the classical music but it has become so tame and unadventurous. I don't see the point of a public broadcaster with those playlists, as if there's nowhere else you could hear U2 or Coldplay. Has it even worked? I never see e.g. office workers putting on Radio 2 instead of adult contemporary radio.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 24 March 2014 12:49 (eleven years ago)

I guess that's not totally fair: like I said, there's an interesting mix on some shows, some good documentaries, and the classical programming is still decent. The trend baffles me, though.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 24 March 2014 12:58 (eleven years ago)

Randy Bachman's Vinyl Tap is the most bafflingly awful radio show. I have a friend who hate-listens (you can add "hate-" to any action these days, I suppose) to it regularly and I don't know how he does it.
