I just discovered this board while trying to find out whether or not all these vinyl reissues of the last 5+ years I've been seeing are legit or not. Needless to say, I found much more than I was expecting. The pace, conversation, and vibe here reminds me of the 'net of the early 90s. I just had to register.

A corruption of the word "Owned." This originated in an online game called Warcraft, where a map designer misspelled "owned." When the computer beat a player, it was supposed to say, so-and-so "has been owned."

Instead, it said, so-and-so "has been pwned."

It basically means "to own" or to be dominated by an opponent or situation, especially by some god-like or computer-like force.

"Man, I rock at my job, but I still got a bad evaluation. I was pwned."

"That team totally pwned us."

Being obnoxious is not a requirement though. These "welcome newbie" threads always seem to descend into lots of collective back-patting about how sarcastic and assholishness we all are. I'd like to emphasize that there is room for other types of talk here (not that I am denying that I am not at times sarcastic and/or assholish). Some of my favorite posters here largely stay away from the dick-waving pissing contests, but turn up with leads on music that interests me (or that I don't know about yet).

yeah I'd recommend just reading threads that interest you and jumping in where you feel you have something to contribute. as noted, this thread is likely to quickly devolve into in-jokes and image-bombing and people acting as if being deliberately misleading is high comedy.
