WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BOB MACK?

If this man just made like a mole and went underground, it would not surprise me. The last few articles I read of his (in Details magazine, around 2001 or so), he sounded burnt out for real, as if the whole journalism world was starting to get to him. But for years, this man's byline was prominent in magazines, thanks to countless articles in Spin and Grand Royal. Then he went on to Details mag, and the tone of his writing just got more and more brittle (esp. that piece he wrote about the time he collaborated on a project for Apple Computers, I think it was???).

But that was six years ago.

Where is he today?

(And it just dawned on me...you don't think he's lurking around on ILX somewhere, do ya?)

Great question... I loved all of this guy's pieces. Come to think of it, it might have been one of the first times when I made a point of looking at a byline and making a note of it.

I looked him up on the Net just before starting this thread...sure enough, just about everything that turned up on him stopped at 2001.

Could he have started writing under a different name? "Bob Mack" sounds like a "Grand Royal"-y alias, I guess.

Nah, he'd actually had a history before Grand Royal came along (I think).

yeah, his first Beastie connection came from doing a pre-PB profile in Spin or some such

That's not the same Bob Mack - the guy I'm talking about is at least 20 years younger than the guy in that link.

He could be very funny. He did the legendary Nuge interview too.

Mark (MarkR), Sunday, 21 January 2007 04:11 (eighteen years ago)

Now THAT Nugent interview (which originally ran in Grand Royal) should be in one of those rock-crit anthologies that turn up every now and then. Mack STOOD UP to Nugent, calling him to the carpet for Damn Yankees and a million other offenses, and the two are just barking insults at each other left & right...the interview ended with the two men damn near turning into bosom buddies.

"What was up with Damn Yankees? That was pretty lame."
