South By Southwest March 14-18 2007: who's going, hot picks, day parties, random thoughts etc.

Roy Kasten (Roy Kasten), Sunday, 21 January 2007 01:38 (nineteen years ago)

The SX machine is playing band announcements close to their control freak vests. But that won't stop the rock.

From the Austinist.com:

Last week, the Austin Chronicle reported that officials at SXSW are
delaying the release of their huge band list. The rationale is that a
late release will cut down on the rampant day party scene from last
year since party planners won't know who is playing until late in the
game. Given the unbridled love we have for day parties, we have our
doubts about the effectiveness of these tactics, but that still
doesn't get you a band list, does it?

To help ease the sting, we've sifted through MySpace, Done Waiting,
The Yahoo! SXSW Group, lots of music blogs, and Pollstar to compile an
Initial list of acts either confirmed or very likely to attend. We'd like to
emphasize that this list is not official, and that bands drop out of
SXSW all the time, so don't take this as gospel. That said, there's a good
Chance you'll see 98% of these bands at SXSW 2007 (list is after the jump):

Pipettes will be there I am pretty sure.

Saxby D. Elder (Saxby D. Elder), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

Cute Is What We Aim For

Someone must die.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

Haha.

The Hold Steady will be there, too, and rumor has it they might appear at the Found Magazine party. I luv that pub.

Roy Kasten (Roy Kasten), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

What is the actual point of SXSW nowadays? (really, not trying to be snotty or start in on anything) I can remember back when it was basically an A&R confab but (1) many if not most of these bands are signed and (2) with myspace and all the other ways of sussing out bands nowadays, does it have some new paradigm that makes any sense to anyone?

I am thinking about going just because it might be fun mainly but what is its current mission statement? I did attempt to find it on their website, lest anyone suggest that I am the type of moron who wouldn't try that. Plus I am interested in what real people say anyway.

Saxby D. Elder (Saxby D. Elder), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

lots of bands still get signed at sxsw. that list ain't near all the bands that are playing the official stuff, not to mention unofficial stuff...

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:49 (eighteen years ago)

But there are also plenty of unsigned bands that don't get a shot to play SXSW because they're crowded out by all the bands that are doing well for themselves already.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

it's not like the signed bands set the booking policy of sxsw, dude.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

Well this is the whole point. What is the actual idea behind the conference? To showcase these bands that are already "doing well for themselves" or its more traditional paradigm of "A&R"?

I suppose that you could guess that a lot of these bands are basically indie bands who are performing in front of major label A&R moguls in order to make the jump to the big time? If so, that grosses me out a little.

Or, I guess as many big-time music journalists get to boondoggle on down there, it is still a good press showcase.

Saxby D. Elder (Saxby D. Elder), Monday, 22 January 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

They should give Hot 8 a slot.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 22 January 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

that's the thing, there is no single "idea" for it. since lots of different bands, all at different stages of popularity, play it, there's a myriad of ways the fest can be used for said bands.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 22 January 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

It's a party for music fans--if you can afford the wristband and line-up early for shows--a shmooz and scout-fest for heavy industry and pure promo/name recognition for indie labels. Why does Bloodshot throw a free party every year? Cause it works.

Roy Kasten (Roy Kasten), Monday, 22 January 2007 18:29 (eighteen years ago)

>They should give Hot 8 a slot.
-- Jordan (jordan...), January 22nd, 2007.

Last year the folks who do the Pinewood Stomp event in New Orleans as well as Offbeat magazine I think, put together a New Orleans event that the S x SW organizers included (there was also a club night with Houston rappers btw), I wonder if there will be any such events this year? Did Hot 8 submit a tape and stuff? I think you and I will need to remind/help the brass bands, because relying on the indie and roots rock leaning S x SW organizers to invite them does not look very promising.

curmudgeon (DC Steve), Monday, 22 January 2007 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

Cary Baker's free Conqueroo party should be a good time.
Wed 3/14: Willie Nile, James McMurtry, Adrienne Young, Hacienda Brothers, Uncle Monk (Tommy Ramone), Randy Weeks, Stan Ridgway, Silos, Tom Freund, maybe some form of dB’s or Stamey/Holsapple, etc. etc.

Roy Kasten (Roy Kasten), Monday, 22 January 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

it's not like the signed bands set the booking policy of sxsw, dude.

When did I say that they did?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 22 January 2007 20:01 (eighteen years ago)

This lineup looks miserable.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Monday, 22 January 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

x-post
Pinewood Stomp...I meant the Ponderosa Stomp in New Orleans(btw, they're gonna have lots of obscure New Orleans r'n'b acts, plus Roky Erickson and others)

curmudgeon (DC Steve), Monday, 22 January 2007 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

When did I say that they did?

you didn't, but your post:

But there are also plenty of unsigned bands that don't get a shot to play SXSW because they're crowded out by all the bands that are doing well for themselves already.

implies that you think it's the fault of "bands... doing well for themselves," which of course doesn't make sense since any band can register for sxsw, and the fest is "curated" (if you will) by sxsw, etc.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 22 January 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

Right, so I'm blaming the curators.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 22 January 2007 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

sure thing, cap'n obvious.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 22 January 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

This lineup looks miserable.

It's just a sliver. The Japanese band showcases are usually pretty swell. Roky did a full set last year (non SX event though) and he was so unbelievably good.

Roy Kasten (Roy Kasten), Monday, 22 January 2007 20:39 (eighteen years ago)

SXSW is a great time. If you can't find a full day and night of good music at SXSW you don't have ears. It's a worthwhile time for a band if you have a record coming out in the next three months.

Uncle Tom (Uncle Tom), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 07:39 (eighteen years ago)

and the curators do a great job at what is by no means an easy gig.

Uncle Tom (Uncle Tom), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 07:41 (eighteen years ago)

I hate SXSW a lot less now that I don't live there. When you live there you get really tired of Johnny Avaricious from L.A. invading your town, even if it's only once a year.

Charlie Brown (kenan), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 07:50 (eighteen years ago)

I really hate it. It is just one of those times that you have to wait through for the sake of the Austin tourist industry. It is like everything douchebaggy about the music industry takes over for a week.

The film and new media sections of the festival are far more bareable.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 11:07 (eighteen years ago)

hating on SXSW just because you're a local is a higher form of douchebaggery.

As if on a normal day you could see japanese bands play dive bars in the middle of the day for free.

Uncle Tom (Uncle Tom), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 05:53 (eighteen years ago)

per advice from 2 Austin natives, I'm thinking of going the weekend AFTER if I can manage the cost.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

im going! got my room, etc. last year was lots of fun - but i dont think i went to any of the official sxsw thing - just day parties and like magazine parties at nite

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

the fader house this year is going to be even better. bigger space too.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

i'm going too. looking forward... daytime and after-parties are where it's at. fuck the schedule.

that's so taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 22:22 (eighteen years ago)

As if on a normal day you could see japanese bands play dive bars in the middle of the day for free.

You're making the assumption that seeing Japanese _BANDS_ means anything to me. To me, it just means a week of not being able to see the stuff that really represents Austin and having to fight tourist crowds and spend twice as much on drinks. I am not being willfully contrarian to be uber hip, it is just annoying to have your town taken over for something that means nothing to you.

When UR and Transmat host parties at SXSW I will change my tune...

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Thursday, 25 January 2007 08:53 (eighteen years ago)

a week of not being able to see the stuff that really represents Austin

As if scores of Austin bands don't use that week to play around town in counter-SXSW events--all the unofficial parties and gigs have become the best unintended consequences of that week. See ya at South By San Jose. I'll buy you a pricey drink at the pool.

Roy Kasten (Roy Kasten), Thursday, 25 January 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

Expect Iron and Wine and Calexico plugging their new album and possibly Joanna Newsom.

Sufjan will be there, Asthmatic Kitty is having their own pre party thingy.

wesley useche, Thursday, 22 February 2007 05:13 (eighteen years ago)

not to change the subject too terribly much, but i'm going. i've never been. and i want to hit up some good used record stores. Are there any?

QuantumNoise, Thursday, 22 February 2007 12:33 (eighteen years ago)

Waterloo, Cheapo and Sound on Sound are the ones I've been to. All three are worth a visit. Cheapo has a pretty big selection, especially of Texas-related music. Here's more info:

map of parties

Ms Misery, Thursday, 22 February 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

Fuck but that map is a whole lotta blank on Safari. :(

Roy Kasten, Thursday, 22 February 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

no parties yet. ;)

I think it's just a google map.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 22 February 2007 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

Oh there are most definitely parties. :) Interactive map works great in Firefox! The line up for the Onion AV Party and the Super Deluxe Party look pretty swell.

Roy Kasten, Thursday, 22 February 2007 20:43 (eighteen years ago)

does anybody put together lists of all the unofficial shows? i noticed that blues control and wooden shijps are playing, but I don't see them on any offical list. Does this mean I just have to scour myspace sites finding out who is going to be there during the festival?

QuantumNoise, Thursday, 22 February 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

There will be a number of "complete" lists of unofficial shows. The Austinist did a good one last year; this map thing is kewl but a straightforward text list is better. There will be one. If not, I'll make it myself and post it here. Day parties are still coming together.

Roy Kasten, Thursday, 22 February 2007 21:18 (eighteen years ago)

thanks much for all the info.

thanks, hstencil. are you going?

QuantumNoise, Thursday, 22 February 2007 21:36 (eighteen years ago)

http://showlistaustin.com/#sxsw

Now that's more like it.

Roy Kasten, Thursday, 22 February 2007 21:59 (eighteen years ago)

now here's an odd question. what's the nature like around Austin? Good day hikes that are just a few miles away? Parties are cool and all, but I love hiking too much to pass on the opportunity. I've never been to that part of the country.

QuantumNoise, Friday, 23 February 2007 14:19 (eighteen years ago)

Some native Austinites should chime in here--as the only hiking I've done in Austin was during ACL, i.e. from one end of Zilker Park to the other--but:

http://www.texashiking.com/

The Hill Country is really nice, and only about 1/2 hour drive from the city.

Roy Kasten, Friday, 23 February 2007 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

thanks for the link. i've been checking out some local hiking websites. that hill country looks really quite pretty and defniitely close enough to check out.

music and hking: the two greatest things ever.

QuantumNoise, Friday, 23 February 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

so what's the deal with a show like willie nelson/merle haggard at the backyard on Saturday night. do i even have a chance in hell in getting in the place? how early do you have to show up to a show like that? i'd love to see em, but i don't want to wait in line and miss other bands at other clubs.
(sorry, this is all new for me)

QuantumNoise, Friday, 23 February 2007 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i'm going.

hstencil, Friday, 23 February 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

The Willie/Merle/Ray concerts aren't SXSW. They're also sold out. If you really want to go, check eBay or Craigslist for tickets.

Roy Kasten, Friday, 23 February 2007 17:26 (eighteen years ago)

i see. but some of the unofficial stuff kinda works like official, right? i mean, you just walk right in?

QuantumNoise, Friday, 23 February 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

Um, if you're talking about the free day parties, yes. But that Backyard Show wasn't one of them. Also, don't assume that all day parties are free. Some are badge or invite only. Check the lists posted above for details.

We should meet up for a drink at South By San Jose or the Twangfest Party at Jovita's; both are favorites of mine.

Roy Kasten, Friday, 23 February 2007 17:46 (eighteen years ago)

hey, i'm up for it.

QuantumNoise, Friday, 23 February 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

IMHO the best used record store in Austin and one of the best in Texas. Their selection is excellent and their prices are cheap.

Chuck Prophet w/ Kelly Willis last night was super cool. Pissed I got shut out of the Reining Sound and Mary Weiss...

Roy Kasten, Friday, 16 March 2007 14:00 (eighteen years ago)

question: austin public/cable access (channel 10) was showing bands from around SXSW. around 2 am, i caught some dudes (long hair and shor, beard and no beard) rocking massive-sounding hybrid of the FIRST Teenage Fanclub LP, Crazy Horse, country twang, and stoner bombast. The drummer was pretty ferocious. They play a set. Then the singer came out with ana coustic guitar and played some solo folk tunes including Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talkin". Then the band came back out and did a cover of ELO's "Telephone Line." Anybody know who I saw? Thanks.
