I AM ROLLING SO HARD (Live DJ Sets 2007)

A place to talk about sets we have danced to/witnessed in person.

Had my first Carl Craig experience last night-- pretty astounding, especially since I wasn't expecting some of the more eclectic flourishes (ie- was expecting straight well-mixed detroit techno...). some moments were sublime.

Tim Sweeney was okay, but I sometimes think that he doesn't have a good enough sense of the crowd? That given, when he played "Lost in Music," it was one of the best moments of the night.

how was the studio b crowd?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 21 January 2007 03:46 (nineteen years ago)

i was surprised not only by the number of people willing to dance for so long, but also the diversity of the crowd. sweeney started getting it and the crowd started digging him towards the end of his set. cc was pretty much banging and making people go nuts all night.

and no one was too obnoxious, except the icy bartenders.

www.rhythmism.com

my next philly-nyc trip is going to be on feb 2nd, to see egyptian lover, in flagranti, etc. that isn't a dj set thing, from my understanding, tho it should be very awesome.

the table is the table (treesessplode), Sunday, 21 January 2007 04:03 (nineteen years ago)

posted this on wrong thread, but the Lost in Music version that Sweeney played was the Bernard Edwards/Nile Rodger 1984 remix.

the table is the table (treesessplode), Sunday, 21 January 2007 04:24 (nineteen years ago)

which is fucking superb when compared with the original, which is awesome.

Well most of this was in 2007 (although C. Craig was mostly still in 2006), but the Detroit Legends of Electronic Music night in Detroit on NYE was astounding. Only when Kevin Saunderson and then Derrick May followed him would Craig open a night, but it was special. Al Ester played for the first three hours in a side room and did an admirable job, but had a hard time getting much attention with Craig and Saunderson spinning right night door. However, the first hour or so of Theo Parrish's side room set (before Derrick May stole his crowd) completely solidified his myth in my mind. The strange eqing, the panning, the hard, grinding sounds mixed with pure soul (and lots of JB on that night, so soon after his passing) were transcendent. It was kinda sad to see his room pretty much empty about 30 minutes into Derrick May's set, but I suppose it's understandable. May's set was classic techno done as well as I could imagine. All around it was an incredible night.

I would have stayed with Parrish.

the table is the table (treesessplode), Sunday, 21 January 2007 15:03 (nineteen years ago)

Well I certainly skipped about, figuring I might not see any of them again (they just don't seem to make it to NC), but yeah it felt like Theo deserved equal billing.

I just want to second what table said about Studio B and Carl Craig on Friday. After negotiating brutal service changes on the subway and then walking through deserted Greenpoint in the freezing cold I was wondering why I bothered leaving the apartment, but I was blown away when I finally got there and saw the place rammed with people dancing as the strobes flashed. Like table, I was very impressed with how up for it and unpretentious the crowd was.

I missed Tim Sweeney but yeah Carl Craig's set was great. Before Optimo there is this:

nervous (cochere), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

studio b is so strange..

poortheatre (poortheatre), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

how so? ive never been but im going for lindstrom, whats their deal

nervous (cochere), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 22:34 (eighteen years ago)

why? it's pretty typical, at least from my (albeit somewhat limited) experience. at least it isn't APT, which is my least favorite place in new york, almost.

the table is the table (treesessplode), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 22:35 (eighteen years ago)

I saw justice DJ on saturday night. they played 'just one fix' by ministry, it was a treat.

slackety yax (H2-H4), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

a debate b/w friends and i about tomorrow night: Egyptian Lover & In Flagranti OR Cabanne? my heart says the former, but the fact that i hate taking an hour-long subway ride from brooklyn just to get back to brooklyn makes me say the latter.

the table is the table (treesessplode), Thursday, 1 February 2007 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

i wouldn't miss egyptian lover, he's great live or dj'ing...

mikebee (heywood), Friday, 2 February 2007 04:39 (eighteen years ago)

XXX-post

i've only seen one show there (oneida/black dice-- really good), and the clubbing/fog machine aesthetic and the music were somewhat, er, incongruous haha. plus, the was a thirty minute line to get in. ugh.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Friday, 2 February 2007 05:21 (eighteen years ago)

but this is a dj set thread

nervous (cochere), Friday, 2 February 2007 06:51 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, the Egyptian Lover w/ In Flagranti was merely okay... the latter were doing well when i left, and EL was good.... but there's only so much of the bom-ch-bom-ch-bombom-ch-bom-ch i can take, and by the end of his set, i sort of wanted his sweaty face away from the booth.

the table is the table (treesessplode), Thursday, 8 February 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

new things:
will anyone be going to see Dandy Jack &the Junction SM vs Pier Bucci at Cielo on the 22nd? what about alex under on march 2nd? i'm trying to decide about the former, but after listening to my alex under live sets again, i think i'm all bout it.

the table is the table (treesessplode), Thursday, 8 February 2007 23:09 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
Pier Bucci was NOT GOOD. i mean, he had a good attitude, but it was all just too...stupid.

Dandy Jack & Junction SM were pretty sweet, especially when they started using the kills and actually bringing it down for more than 5 seconds. The first hour or so was too BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM without any valleys or peaks, and it got a bit tiresome. By the end of their set there was a good deal of smiling and pointing at the crowd from both of 'em.

Also, Cielo is totally fucking absurd and they lost my scarf. The sound is not too good either-- even APT has better bass.

Anyway, good night had by all!

the table is the table, Saturday, 24 February 2007 23:23 (eighteen years ago)

I saw Benga last night and it was really fucking great. Lots of garagey bits and 4/4 stuff (I believe some of this to be Benga and Skream collaborations) rather than halfstep overload. He's well and truly added to the list of djs I'm really excited to be seeing at the dmz 2nd birthday in a few weeks.

jim, Saturday, 24 February 2007 23:41 (eighteen years ago)

I saw Tim Sweeny in San Diego on thursday and he was pretty great. The same people are bringing in JD Twitch this upcoming wednesday!! Can't wait.

sous les paves, Sunday, 25 February 2007 01:20 (eighteen years ago)

who is putting on tim / twitch? where did he play? is it the same people who did tim "love" lee a couple of years ago? people were talking about that one for a long time afterward.

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 25 February 2007 01:44 (eighteen years ago)

it's kind of a superpromoter group of mark-e-quark, barry weaver, and some other guys. They had Claude Vonstroke last month, they have Chris Druckenfield and Maurice Fulton coming up. Kind of strange that this kind of thing is happening in San Diego, but turnout has been good.

okay, already on the wmc thread, but the saunderson/pullen/burridge/may lineup the other night was excellent. and burridge kept it especially intoxicating.

the table is the table, Saturday, 24 March 2007 23:40 (eighteen years ago)

Ellen Allien and Miss Kittin wasn't very good (Studio B). Probably mostly cos of the indie rock crowd.

paulhw, Monday, 26 March 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

that sort of sounds like it would be a bit tiresome...

the table is the table, Monday, 26 March 2007 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

Studio B was pretty lame on Saturday night.
The crowd was okay, but between the organizational nightmare of getting in and the crappy sound system the music was almost a moot point but it was also pretty boring.

saudade, Monday, 26 March 2007 23:45 (eighteen years ago)

wait, the sound was crappy? when i saw Carl Craig there and then Egyptian Lover there, the sound was pretty good!

the table is the table, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 00:48 (eighteen years ago)

v.v.v. excited about rub n tug this friday! also on bill: the kitsune in-house djs, whose name escapes me (hmmmm), 2 many djs (fun, but seen before), plus some bands (soulwax in nite versions mode, etc).
