My answer would be "Deja Vu."

JT - Sexyback

Adam J. Goldstein (Sharkfins), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

I've gotta say:

Fedde La Grande
Lily Allen
Gnarls Barkley

but they're anomalies. I don't like anything from 2005 other than Elvis really. And even here, these are songs that I "don't mind" rather than "truly love". Looking even further back, I remember quite liking Groovejet's "Spiller" (or was it the other way round?) but then again, I didn't love it. Then you've got Chef's "Chocolate Salty Balls" in 1999. And the Manics "If You Tolerate This" which I liked but wasn't the best song on that album. Ah here we go - "Beetlebum" and "Your Woman" 1997 - it's like the buses since they're right next to each other.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

Then you've got Chef's "Chocolate Salty Balls" in 1999.

Was this seriously number one?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

Yep, 28 years after "Theme From Shaft" was cheated out of its rightful number one slot by the combined forces of Benny Hill, the New Seekers and Cilla Black.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

'sexyback' i guess.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

"sexyback". easy. but wasn't "my love"#1 ?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

is this thread only for Britishes? because I like the current U.S. #1, "Irreplaceable" (and, for that matter, a lot of the recent ones, like "My Love" and "London Bridge" and "Ridin'").

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

Arctic Monkeys - When The Sun Goes Down :/

I have decided about Fedde Le Grand and he can fuck right off. Beyond sick of the up-and-downy pitchy noise already.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

last #1 i bought was 'maneater'

vita susicivus (blueski), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

Wogan Latin yr list misses out "Grace Kelly" by Mika. Not that this changes my opinion at least.

Like - Fedde Le Grand. Actually no, "Patience", but partly cos it was #1 when my son was born.

Love - SexyBack. I like and admire the MCR track but wouldn't say I love it.

xpost Alex in B that's a great run of #1s - lucky US.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

You like "London Bridge," Tom? Yikes!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

978 [...] F**k It (I Don't Want You Back)
979 [...] F.U.R.B. (F U Right Back)
980 [...] I Don't Wanna Know

Let's have a conversation...using song titles!

fandango (fandango), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

man, britain really can't get enough of 'take that'

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

well, there were some in between those that I didn't like at all -- Akon/Snoop, Ludacris/Pharrell, "SexyBack," Shakira/Wyclef, ugh.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

"SexyBack" or "Nasty Girl" (still having mind blown that there's a place where this song went number one. Bassline should have been more forward in the mix)

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:02 (nineteen years ago)

I like "London Bridge" AND "Fergielicious" a lot, Ned!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:04 (nineteen years ago)

I have decided about Fedde Le Grand and he can fuck right off. Beyond sick of the up-and-downy pitchy noise already.

Ah, but there are a whole load of perfectly good tunes on there that have been marred by ubiquity. I'm pretty sick and tired of "Crazy" but I liked it first couple of times I heard it.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:04 (nineteen years ago)

I like "London Bridge" AND "Fergielicious" a lot, Ned!

Yeeps. That's kinda knocking me over with a feather.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

I think they're really likeable - brash, candy-striped hip-pop, I like it when Gwen S does similar stuff too.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:09 (nineteen years ago)

I feel kind of goofy doing nitpickery 'this pop song is better than this pop song!' kind of posts in '07 but really, fergalicious was a great frankenstein monster of an 80s song and london bridge was a not so good missy elliott bite.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

x-post -- I have to at least thank you for not mentioning The Dread One's name in full.

I feel kind of goofy doing nitpickery 'this pop song is better than this pop song!' kind of posts

And you're saying this on ILM. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

"Black Parade" but I also really liked that Scissor Sisters single
this would be a bit more difficult if it was the US charts, I imagine

I feel kind of goofy doing anything but, these days!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

the fergie album was so slept on last year - i've said this elsewhere, i nearly didn't rate it because of residual anti-ferg prejudice, but once i got over that i realised just how great a pop record it is. 'london bridge' and 'fergalicious' aren't even my favourites on it - check 'big girls don't cry', the big clarksonesque ballad ft the line "i'm not gonna miss you like a child misses its blanket"!

lex pretend (lex pretend), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

Take That - "Patience".

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:16 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah I've heard a lot about the album being good, I should investigate I suppose, or at least check out standout tracks.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

no standout track on the dutchess will give you any clue as to the insanity of the rest of it (or - even better than the insanity, the properly gorgeous harmonies ferg breaks out occasionally!)

lex pretend (lex pretend), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

Lex, here's a serious challenge for you -- what Big Brash Female-Sung Pop Album of the past year *don't* you like? And why?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:19 (nineteen years ago)

lily allen!

lex pretend (lex pretend), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:19 (nineteen years ago)

last no 1 i loved - Maneater

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

(I don't think much of her either.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

I'm with Tom and Lex on the majesty of Her Fergness.

alext (alext), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:21 (nineteen years ago)

For some reason all this praise is just making me think of Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:23 (nineteen years ago)

"Patience", apparently.

Put Your Hands Up

my god, but this is a terrible, terrible piece of novelty crap. it's 'superman' and 'doop' and 'crazy frog' and that 'slide to the left' tune all over again. I'm astonished to discover it has its supporters here!

mister the guanoman (mister the guanoman), Monday, 22 January 2007 18:13 (nineteen years ago)

a) You don't know this place very well
b) Up Yours

God Bows to Meth (noodle vague), Monday, 22 January 2007 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

a) not so.
b) yes, quite snugly, thanks.

mister the guanoman (mister the guanoman), Monday, 22 January 2007 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

It's not a "novelty" record, just a mediocre-but-passable overground electro-house rip. It's defensible in that it might sound 'fresh' to mixmag readers still clinging to the mid-90's (though I don't like it much).

fandango (fandango), Monday, 22 January 2007 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

"My Love" (maybe not really liked but I thought it was fine enough)

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 22 January 2007 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

Kanye – Gold Digger
D4L – Laffy Taffy
Beyonce – Check On It

chart mongrel (kit brash), Monday, 22 January 2007 23:59 (nineteen years ago)

there is a ghostface version of 'irreplaceable'?! yeech.

he has this tendency to pop up on the most inappropriate girly r&b songs, he's like the ultimate boy who never knows when he's not wanted.

there is nothing wrong with 'doop' or the crazy frog, you have to be seriously curmudgeonly to think that there is.

lex pretend (lex pretend), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 00:21 (eighteen years ago)

genuine answer to question: 26 Feb 2000 All Saints Pure Shores. ya rly.

lex and company, you've got a heck of a job convincing me.

(and before Pure Shores, the answer's *cringes* 'D'ya Know What I Mean'...and then 'Beetlebum')

"I Don't Feel Like Dancin'"

Surprised that song actually hit #1.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 02:44 (eighteen years ago)

I feel kind of goofy doing nitpickery 'this pop song is better than this pop song!' kind of posts in '07 but really, fergalicious was a great frankenstein monster of an 80s song and london bridge was a not so good missy elliott bite.

I keep hearing people make this kind of comparison and I think it's bonkers. "Fergalicious" is a Frankenstein monster, yes, but it's in a way that feels like it's trying too hard to be one. It's also way less catchy to me. "London Bridge" is such a perfect slab of stupidity, and I don't mean that denigratingly or in a generic "pop is so disposable and that's what's so lovely about it" way - just that it's rare for songs, even ones explicitly about getting stupid at the club or whatever, to actually really capture the vibe and style of people who are getting stupid at the club. Fergie's drunk-ass delivery, the repetition of whole verses, and the forced, bluff-like presentation of confidence and attractiveness - it's a unique little moment I think.

(Of course, I didn't think so at first...)

because of this I'm listening to it for the first time!! AWESOME!!!!

this song rules

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 23 January 2007 07:51 (eighteen years ago)

ts: "T to the A to the S-T-E-Y girl you tasty" vs "Y-O-U-R making this hard"

lex pretend (lex pretend), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 07:55 (eighteen years ago)

"Doop" is terrific, Louis - a neat idea excellently executed (there are different Charleston tunes doop-i-fied on the CD single, well worth tracking down). Very hard to dance to, I've discovered playing it at Poptimism.

"Crazy Frog" I don't like as much as some but away from the media blitz it's a bouncy version of a good track, so certainly harmless.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 09:52 (eighteen years ago)

Oooh, I quite liked that slow version of Crazy that GB did on TOTP, but I can't find it for real anywhere. Before that it goes all the way back to 5 Colour in Her hair.

Crazy Frog is the last CD single I actually bought, I've just realised.

(It was a birthday present for Mark S)

there is nothing wrong with 'doop' or the crazy frog, you have to be seriously curmudgeonly to think that there is.

bah. kids today and so on.

mister the guanoman (mister the guanoman), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 10:15 (eighteen years ago)

I prefer the remixes on the single of 'Doop' to the original, I have discovered during '94 mix research.

What I think is wrong with 'Doop': IT'S REALLY ANNOYING

vita susicivus (blueski), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 10:19 (eighteen years ago)

Some of the mixes are a bit less in-your-face. I don't find it annoying though, it's like a lovely clockwork toy.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 10:23 (eighteen years ago)

a lovely clockwork toy in the face? ouch

'doop' is like a wham bar or something.

-object of nostalgia
-kind of rushy, at least one time
-shit

one day i'm going to loop one of the compy horn stabs in doop stick it under a crunch 4/4 open the gates to a heavenly creschendo before dropping the main theme of the song possibily with added handclaps i will be so happy.

george bob (george bob), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 12:47 (eighteen years ago)

i liked that put yr hands up for detroit. altho after a brief stint working for virgin over christmas and having to endure the end of year best of compilations for 8 hours a day i pretty much love every single of 2006. gah.

george bob (george bob), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 12:48 (eighteen years ago)

Lilly Allen, but not since SOS has there been something really great on the top spot.

from The ends of your fingers (prosper.strummer.), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 13:20 (eighteen years ago)

The Put Your Hands Up/Cha Cha Slide/Doop genre of number ones are the kind of records which only really make sense at about eleven thirty on the dancefloor after the fifteenth sipping of Blossom Wine. This is not necessarily a bad thing.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 13:22 (eighteen years ago)

I would say Gnarls Barkley "Crazy" except it somehow was never #1 in America!

'Rapture' by Blondie. 'Believe' by Cher was pretty good.

Dr. Joseph A. Ofalt (hyloolnuspstt), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 02:03 (eighteen years ago)

fuck I forgot about "Ridin'" - that song is like 200x better than "My Love" so I'll say that

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 24 January 2007 06:17 (eighteen years ago)

I quite like "Irreplacable", but "Permiscuous" was the last one I wasn't happy if it didn't come on the radio every 3rd song.

The Reverend Rodney J. Greene With Strings (R. J. Greene), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 06:58 (eighteen years ago)

I'm gonna have to go with Elvis here. I have not consciously heard a single one of those songs listed. I heard "My Humps" in a sleazy bar in Cottage Grove, Oregon a couple of months ago, and I have also heard TATU's "All About Us". I thought those were both tolerable (the first time, at least), but I guess they aren't #1 material.

If I looked at a US list my answer might be different.

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 09:14 (eighteen years ago)

Fandango is right in that "Put Your Hands Up For Detroit" isn't nearly so much of a novelty single as people say it is. I mean it's about as novelty as any dance tune that does well.

"just a mediocre-but-passable overground electro-house rip. It's defensible in that it might sound 'fresh' to mixmag readers still clinging to the mid-90's (though I don't like it much)."

This is a kinda annoying thing to say though.
