Or does she belong here:

Bands/Pop stars that are quickly becoming relics of the earlier part of this decade?

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 13:03 (eighteen years ago)

I like the photo of her that keeps showing up on pandora.com.

R_S (RSLaRue), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 13:07 (eighteen years ago)

It's OK. Very pleasant in the background. All or most all original tunes, which I'm not sure was wise.

Roy Kasten (Roy Kasten), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

Anything as good as "Sunrise" on it?

A. Lingbert (A. Lingbert), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

I'll tentatively say no for now, but I need to listen more. It's a wee small hours album.

Roy Kasten (Roy Kasten), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

Norah Jones would have been feted as a cult hero in the days before Starbucks...

hank (hank s), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 18:59 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't been to pandora.com, but the promo photo for this album is pretty superb.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

She is pretty and a very good singer.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 19:33 (eighteen years ago)

yeah I loved "Sunrise" but don't really feel compelled to hear anything else by her. she is pretty, though.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

I guess hoping this was a David Banner cover was too much to ask for

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

Wasn't this the thread title when NJ released her last album?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

ditto the Sunrise LOVE, and I'll give her new one a chance I guess, despite the single.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

xpost No.

Taking Sides: Lil' Kim vs. Norah Jones

Roy Kasten (Roy Kasten), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

I was listening to it in the middle of the night last week and all of a sudden it struck me... this is a Bonnie Raitt album (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). I checked the credits, but Raitt's nowhere to be found.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 20:56 (eighteen years ago)

I think Norah Jones is going to settle into a nice long pleasant career, over the backlash hump.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 21:04 (eighteen years ago)

She is pretty and a very good singer.

and also one of the flat-out nicest music-type people i've ever talked to. it's nice to know that smart, funny, friendly, slightly goofy people can sell millions of records.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)

(altho tbh i'm more curious about how she'll fare in that wong kar-wai film than i am about her new album.)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

nope.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

her music makes me wanna drown myself in a birthday cake

surmounter (rra123), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

That sounds like fun actually.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 22:55 (eighteen years ago)

i know it's fun but in that weird, unsettling way

like i can imagine one of her songs being played in a david lynch movie flashback scene with like dark synths beneath it

or not.

surmounter (rra123), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

but anyway no i don't care about the new album. i'd buy it for someone i hate.

surmounter (rra123), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 23:00 (eighteen years ago)

wtf

A. Lingbert (A. Lingbert), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 23:02 (eighteen years ago)

I'm really looking forward to my blueberry nights.

A. Lingbert (A. Lingbert), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 23:07 (eighteen years ago)

She's the definition of 'safe' defined by CD purchases at bookstores.

def zep (calstars), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 23:20 (eighteen years ago)

not even close to a 90s relic... this is a much-anticipated album in bookstore music departments. since before christmas every day i've worked i've had somebody asking me for this.

the fact that this album and the new celtic woman CD come out on the same day amounts to a second christmas for some people!

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 23:27 (eighteen years ago)

oops. early-2000s relic.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 23:27 (eighteen years ago)

Does anyone care just to see if switches things up at all? I don't plan on buying it but won't mind hearing it once.

Adam Harrison-Friday (AdamFriday), Thursday, 25 January 2007 01:31 (eighteen years ago)

Wasn't there something of a switchup from the bland jazz lounge-thing of the first record and the country lounge-thing of the second?

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Thursday, 25 January 2007 02:27 (eighteen years ago)

This new one's supposed to be more of a soul lounge-thing.

I don't mind Norah. She seems to do what she wants, when she wants and doesn't cater to any particular audience. Can't say I'm a fan of her music though but she's still young and she might surprise us one day.

Jeff K (jeff k), Thursday, 25 January 2007 02:53 (eighteen years ago)

jeff k otmfm. hey surmounter, come on back to the thread when you stop trying so hard to prove how cool you are, okay?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 25 January 2007 02:55 (eighteen years ago)

lol, bland jazz lounge and country lounge - maybe i could get into that but her songwriting would have to be good

surmounter (rra123), Thursday, 25 January 2007 02:55 (eighteen years ago)

OK so she's definitely lounge

surmounter (rra123), Thursday, 25 January 2007 02:55 (eighteen years ago)

Norah Jones. Rhymes with Ambien. But in a nice, goofy way. I'll take one.

Dr. Joseph A. Ofalt (hyloolnuspstt), Thursday, 25 January 2007 04:20 (eighteen years ago)

I find her pleasant but boring to an almost surreal degree. Heard the single and the chord changes and arrangement sound an awful lot like Dirty Work by Steely Dan.

The singing sounds exactly like every single other Nora Jones song everevery single other Nora Jones song everevery single other Nora Jones song everevery single other Nora Jones song ever.

Tronid K (tronidk), Thursday, 25 January 2007 07:31 (eighteen years ago)

the chord changes and arrangement sound an awful lot like Dirty Work by Steely Dan.

awesome!

Marmot (marmotwolof), Thursday, 25 January 2007 07:34 (eighteen years ago)

Tronid K came here to prove how cool HE is; isn't that AWESOME?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 26 January 2007 01:56 (eighteen years ago)

It's cool to be cool, baby. Everything is everything.

The Redd And The Blecch (Ken L), Friday, 26 January 2007 02:11 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, the album cover is gorgeous:

I think I'm gonna pick this up on Tuesday, the single has grown on me.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Saturday, 27 January 2007 23:51 (eighteen years ago)

Here's that photo:

http://spe.atdmt.com/b/AAAVEAPPLIMS/300x250_iTunes_NorahJones_010206_US.jpg

She looks different in every photo (just about).

Rockist Scientist, Hippopoptimist (RSLaRue), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 11:57 (eighteen years ago)

She is so goddamned beautiful.

Anyway, I still want to hear her 'punk' band!

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 12:21 (eighteen years ago)

I was in a Starbucks today and saw the new CD at the register and read it as Not Too Latte.

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 21:15 (eighteen years ago)

The title track is gorgeous. She's at her best when doing slow-burning piano ballads/torch songs.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:01 (eighteen years ago)

A lot of 50-something album buyers do indeed care. Which is not a bad thing, considering Norah Jones is musically better than most of the stuff those tend to buy nowadays. I mean, Helmut Loti?? Il Divo????

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 5 February 2007 02:14 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, she should have named the album 'Ambien.'...but she is very beautiful.

def zep (calstars), Monday, 5 February 2007 04:06 (eighteen years ago)

How did I not learn until last night that she is Ravi Shankar's daughter??? I'd read multiple profiles of her, and I'm amazed none of them thought to mention it.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

probably because the first 1,000,000 profiles of her mentioned it, and then everyone figured they didn't have to mention it anymore

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

Haha and now the cycle has begun again, and they can mention it to surprise people like me who somehow missed it entirely.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

man when does the statute of limitations run out on that shit?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

When it stops being a totally amazing piece of information!

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

For a long time, for me, Ravi Shankar was only famous for being Norah Jones' father!

I know right? (prosper.strummer.), Monday, 5 February 2007 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't know this either and now I'm like "whoa what a shame she isn't way more rad"

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Monday, 5 February 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

ravi's raga star daughter is hott too.

Norah Jones is so hot, and yet so incredibly boring.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 17:09 (thirteen years ago)

nine years pass...

Her new live album is pretty good. She's a good performer and she has a good band. Nice versions of a bunch of her best songs, with more grooves than I expected. And it ends with a cover of "Black Hole Sun."

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Monday, 10 May 2021 04:43 (four years ago)

Her cover of more than this made me a fan. But then her own music blanded me out. Now however I am very open to pleasant music such as this where the singer has a very nice voice, a good band and a nice and easy mood. This is what good music is all about.

candyman, Monday, 10 May 2021 09:29 (four years ago)

Didn't realize this, but there's live video out there of the "Black Hole Sun" performance. Good stuff.

Spottie, Wednesday, 31 August 2022 23:54 (three years ago)

I saw her back in 2010 and she was utterly charming.

I admit, though, I don't seek her out very much.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 31 August 2022 23:57 (three years ago)

The album she was touring, The Fall, was a little meatier than her prior records.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 1 September 2022 00:04 (three years ago)

hadnt thought about her in a decade probably.

Spottie, Thursday, 1 September 2022 00:04 (three years ago)

I don't even need to watch that video to say ... whatta band.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 1 September 2022 00:07 (three years ago)

This is so, so good. Also with Frisell.
