"Nobody does it like you - the way that you do. Hoover - nobody does it like you!"

I really don't know how much better than that you can get.

“I’m Chiquita banana and I’ve come to say/Bananas have to ripen in a certain way/When they are fleck’d with brown and have a golden hue/Bananas taste the best and are best for you/You can put them in a salad/You can put them in a pie-aye/Any way you want to eat them/It’s impossible to beat them/But, bananas like the climate of the very, very tropical equator/So you should never put bananas in the refrigerator.”

there was a lovely IDM-ish thing with all these backwards bells and things. I'm sure someone mentioned it on here before and I knew exactly which one they meant. I think the ad was either for shampoo or chocolate or something. It was a good while back. I'm not making much sense here.

Do you remember that ad where Marios Cafe was used, and you went "Ooh, I know that oh its... YES!!"

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

Obvious Stuff:

Oh, I wish I were an Oscar Meyer weiner
That is what I'd truly love to be
'Cuz if I were an Oscar Meyer weiner
Then everyone would be in love with me.

***

My bologna has a first name, it's O-S-C-A-R
My bologna has a second name, it's M-A-Y-E-R
O, I love to eat it every day, and if you ask me why I'll saaaaay
'Cuz Oscar Mayer has a way with B-O-L-O-G-N-A

***

Oh, the world looks mighty good to me
'Cuz Tootsie Rolls are all I see
Whatever it is I think I see
Becomes a Tootsie Roll to me

Tootsie Roll, how I love your chocolately chew
Tootsie Roll I think I'm in love with you
Whatever it is I think I see
Becomes a Tootsie Roll to me

bad.

surmounter (rra123), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

All those jingles used to freak my mind. Especially the Tootsie Roll one, 'cuz the ad was a cartoon of basically everything in the world turning into large, brown turds.

the new sincerity (Pye Poudre), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

I feel like Chicken Tonight, like Chicken Tonight?

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

dunno if this counts as a jingle, but in the late 70s whenever cbs aired a special (usually "a charlie brown christmas" or something like that) there'd be this little pre-show bumper. the word "special" would spin around and there'd be this crazy percussion music followed by a horn sting.

anyone else remember that?

Lawrence the Looter (Lawrence the Looter), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

I sing the Empire jingle all the damn time.

A lot of these are probably not national, but some of my all-time favorites:

Door Unlimited - unlimited doooors!

AU-TO ZOOONE!

Shield your home - the Slomin Shield!

1-800 Safe Auto! (Play it Safe!) SAFE AUTO!

Steve Go1dberg (Steve Schneeberg), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

anyone else remember that?

-- Lawrence the Looter

I TOTALLY remember that! Zooming in on the "C" in "SPECIAL" as it rotates and leaves little acid-trails in it's wake. And I would've forgotten it entirely had I not happened to see it just last month before some Xmas-related cartoon. Probably used for Gen-X nostalgia/irony, since the unidentified 'toon (which I didn't watch) was on the cartoon network, not CBS...

M. Agony Von Bontee (M. Agony Von Bontee), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 17:55 (eighteen years ago)

...oh, and as for favourite jingle: "Meow Mix" seconded.

MVB (M. Agony Von Bontee), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)

Not a jingle per se, but there was an ad (for batteries, I think) sometime in the mid to late 90's that had a video of some fake metal band singing a song that went "We're coming, coming, coming for your young, screaming at the top of our lungs" that consistently made me lose my shit.

joygoat (joygoat), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 23:19 (eighteen years ago)

Dr. Alicia D. Titsovich (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 23:37 (eighteen years ago)

I remember that CBS 'special' one too, Lawrence, I would still have a pavlovian 'yay it's christmas!' response if I saw it today. it was so strange, in retrospect("acid trails" also otm).

tremendoid (tremendoid), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 23:41 (eighteen years ago)

"Real roast beef, bigger burgers, cooked the way you want, at Roll-N-Roaster, the not-so-fast fast food restaurant."

Dr. Alicia D. Titsovich (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 23:43 (eighteen years ago)

HAHAHAHAHA THIS:

"Not a jingle per se, but there was an ad (for batteries, I think) sometime in the mid to late 90's that had a video of some fake metal band singing a song that went "We're coming, coming, coming for your young, screaming at the top of our lungs" that consistently made me lose my shit."
-- joygoat (joygoa...), January 24th, 2007.

Is making me think of THIS (in cartoon form with a lot of arm waving):

"All those jingles used to freak my mind. Especially the Tootsie Roll one, 'cuz the ad was a cartoon of basically everything in the world turning into large, brown turds."

emil.y (emil.y), Thursday, 25 January 2007 01:12 (eighteen years ago)

I lived in Gainesville, FL for a while in 1990. There was this local used car lot with an ad where the mustachioed dealers, with their polo shirts stretched taut over their beer bellies would sing to the tune of "We didn't Start the Fire." They reeled off the name of every car make: "Peugeot, Yugo, Porsche with a turbo..." and then for the chorus, "We're gonna save you money!" Never gotten that one out of my head. Powerful stuff.

Auto Zone is a good one.

This might be regional, but someone in this thread must've heard it at least once, and if they have, they'll definitely know all the words:

"If you're looking for that oooh-ahhh feel / come to mattress giant / if you're looking for that ooh-ahh deal / we've got the best price / for that oooh-ahh bed / only at mattress giant/ ...ooooh, ahhhh / ....oooh, ahh / only at mattress giant / oooooooohhh, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...."

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 25 January 2007 02:53 (eighteen years ago)

oh, and that recent 80s metal Pizza Hut commercial which provides a running commentary on the announcer's track is fantastic, too:

"At Pizza Hut, our new deal is breaking all the rules!"
"HA-HA, it MOCKS your silly rules!!!"

"Mel Farr, Superstar, for a farrrrr better deal"

YES. With him flying around in a tan suit and cape. I grew up in the UP but used to get WKBD out of Detroit. Mel Farr is also listed in the liner notes of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On".

Another Detroit area (I think) jingle was for some construction company that went "No job's too big, no job's too small, we're Father and Son, we'll do it all". We also got WGN from Chicago so it might have been there - this is why I also remember the "588-2300 Empire" jingle.

joygoat (joygoat), Thursday, 25 January 2007 04:25 (eighteen years ago)

"cheese, glorious CHEESE!"

"lookie, lookie, lookie - here comes COOKIE - COOK's PEST CONTROL"

"It's a honey of an 'o' , it's honey nut cheerios"

and my all time fave:

"when pizza is on a bagel, you can have pizza anytime!"

perhaps a local commercial, but jared's jewelers has a jingle "THATS JARED's!" that rules.

Hey, I think Barney Rubble interpolated this on his seminal Fruity Pebbles rap.

I've always loved the old-timey radio Sweet Adeline choral jingles for local rural banks and such. Very similar to the famous Empire jingle. It's hard to find examples online, but there used to be a lot of them and in the 80s they already sounded decades old.
