Mick Jones' true-sounding tale of paths diverging with boyhood friends, yet staying true vs. knowing now Paul Weller what was foreshadowing when he said "we're no longer as thick as thieves" and feeling sorry for poor Bruce Foxton, who has to do the harmony vocal and is clueless what awaits him a few years down the road.

Call me sentimental and a popster - I go with the Clash here.

Thick as Thieves is one of my favourite Jam songs. it's so moving, especially the lyrics, but the way it's built. Clash song is also great, all the songs about youth friendship and break-ups must be great!

Both great songs. I can't decide, I love them both. Toss-up, I guess. Great post though by Mr. i'll mitya halfway. You captured the essence of both songs.

'Thick as Thieves' is fine, but 'Stay Free' is to me a perfect song that usually makes me cry.

Yeah, "Thick As Thieves" is fine, but "Stay Free" is sublime.

"Stay Free" is just a little too treacly for me - I'll take the stiff upper lip of "Thick As Thieves."

I heard a good portion of "Setting Sons" in Fopp 2 days ago.

"Private Hell" and "Thick as Thieves", etc.

It suddenly hits me, PW is guessing, and MJ is singing about something that he knows.

"Stay Free" it is.
