RASTAFARI VOL 1 - Rare piece of vinyl my friend has - it's awesome!

A long time ago I posted about a record my friend found in a Camden cut out bin that was simply called "Rastafari Vol 1". It didn't appear to be a compilation, more four or five tracks and their dubs made by the same anonymous band. The band members included Levi Judah, Hughie Izzachar and a couple of others whom I forget. The cove had four Rastas doing a complicated four-way handshake on the cover.

Ilxors such as Tim Hopkins tried to help me track down more info about this record but to no avail. I managed to get the record onto mini disc where as you can imagine it got put in a box and forgot about for about two years. But due to the magic of my new soundcard, I am currently able to rip the whole thing to MP3 and am hoping to stick a few samples up here for your listening pleasure and also in the hope that we can find some more info about it.

I'm worried about doing this though as we're not really meant to YSI stuff but this is a piece of music I really think more people need to be aware of, plus the fact I can find no source of origin for the recording means we should be in the clear.

Can 12ft Lizards grant me this permission?

I also hope to scan some of the artwork for the cover.

could it be... REGGAE ON TOP? i googled those two names and it asked me if i wanted "hughie izachaar," that seems to be a project they did together. 14 releases or something.

oh, wait, look:

Hughie Izachaar is a London-based singer and multi-talented musician, who can play almost every instrument, like melodica, guitar or bass. So far he has done 5 solo albums:
- Rastafari (Melody Music)
- Divine Love (Melody Music)
- African Melodica Dub (Reggae On Top)
- Praise Jah (Reggae On Top)
- Can`t Take The Pressure (Jah Warrior)

ah yeh i had seen that interview. it's pretty much the only hint i could find on the web that the album exists. for a start, it didn't even have a date on the record.

My friends and I love this record so much we even learnt to replicate the handshake on the front cover. One guy was asked to DJ between a bunch of Punk/Metal bands at a friends birthday and all he did was play tracks from the LP. Surprisingly everyone in the room was dancing even though they all had black band t-shirts on. It was a magical moment.

i'm gonna post it unless anyone has a problem with that. it'll be up within the next coupla hours.

I AND I APPROVE

It's a long, long way from being in print, I think. I'll be interested to see a scan of the cover, to check whether it rings any bells, but I don't think I've ever seen a copy.

A propos of nothing really, I've been enjoying the Noel Ellis reissue, slightly odd-sounding Canadian roots. http://profile.myspace.com/noelellis

Here we go. It's the first time I've ever tried to record something from vinyl so I'm afraid there's a little hiss and the audio quality isn't as clear as I'd like. Still, it's nice to have these on an updtaed format and to share them with you.

If anyone can give me hints on getting rid of hiss and hum (i don't believe in getting rid of crackle) then that would be ace - I'm using Soundforge 8.0.

Listening back to these I'm wondering whether you guys'll be as enthusiastic as we were upon first discovering these or if you'll think it's dross. Only one way to find out. I particularly like "Take Back Yuh Name", "Only Jah Jah" and the soulful "Jah Jah Is The King Of Kings"

Track 01 - Alpha & Omega

Track 02 - Only Jah Jah

Track 03 - Father Almighty

Track 04 - Here I Come

Track 05 - Tek Back Yuh Name
http://www.sendspace.com/file/k396vf

Track 06 - Jah Jah Is The King of Kings

I haven't included the dubs as they're not that interesting and I can't be bothered. But if anyone wants me to I guess I can give it a crack.

Could it be "Rastafari Teachings Vol. 1"? It was released by the label mentioned in the article, Reggae On Top. Can't find a track listing though.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 25 January 2007 17:13 (eighteen years ago)

it's definitely not called rastafari teachings.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Thursday, 25 January 2007 17:40 (eighteen years ago)

sorry, that was a bit short. no it's defo called Rastafari Vol 1 and I think it's credited to "various Artists". Maybe it's a compilation and some of the tracks are featured on Rastafari Teachings.

Anyone download these yet? What do you think?

Bit puzzled by the lack of 4 way handshake - though it seems to feature on another album cover, possibly?

I really wasn't feeling this album.

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 24 January 2011 17:44 (fourteen years ago)

Also, i've only got 4 tracks now. If someone wants to reup, i'd like to reevaluate. Maybe the dubs will sway my opinion?
