It has leaked, listening to it now for the first time. I know I'm going to love it but not sure how loved he is on this board.

Official release date is March 20 in the US.

can't wait to hear it! love him. literate, sensitive, ridiculously talented... all the things people love to hate!

how is it, compared to mysterious production of eggs?

Emily Bjurnhjam (Emily Bjurnhjam), Thursday, 25 January 2007 20:58 (nineteen years ago)

I'm a big fan of Mr. Bird. So far I've only heard the tune "Plasticities," but it sounds like a winner. I've heard great things about the rest of the record.

Steve Go1dberg (Steve Schneeberg), Thursday, 25 January 2007 21:01 (nineteen years ago)

I do not remember being so disappointed as when I saw him in concert here. Boring, smug, self-satisfied. And he wasn't so hot either!

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 25 January 2007 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

'fake palindromes' sold me on BB. I haven't heard a violin rock like that since Dirty Three's Horse Songs. I am excited for this.

J. Grizzle (trainsmoke), Thursday, 25 January 2007 22:38 (nineteen years ago)

Mysterious Production of Eggs is super. Haikunym, though, is right about his solo live shows. But if Bird puts a full band back together--look the fuck out.

Roy Kasten (Roy Kasten), Thursday, 25 January 2007 23:20 (nineteen years ago)

Once when I saw him live he was stellar, the other time he played very well but sounded a bit bland. He's an incredible performer though. A musician that talented can get away with being a little bit smug.

Steve Go1dberg (Steve Schneeberg), Friday, 26 January 2007 00:05 (nineteen years ago)

He really changes the songs live, sometimes abandoning all traces of the melody - I think that's part of what puts me off a bit. But it sure is a spectacle to watch him do his thing.

Steve Go1dberg (Steve Schneeberg), Friday, 26 January 2007 00:06 (nineteen years ago)

He's playing a full band show in London in March which i will be attending.

I like the new album.

Not as good as 'Eggs', but better than 'Weather Systems'.

This is the best thing ever.

Dr. Stringz!

that was so cute!

Isn't it? It's completely adorable.

worth a listen

oh hey, I was looking for this thread a couple weeks ago and couldn't find it. I came around on this one a lot. on first listen it basically felt like watching a friend with long-repressed issues get totally shitfaced. at first he's all funny and charming and everything seems normal, and then all the sudden he's hitting you with shit like "Dark Matter" and "Scythian Empires" where even the whimsy is somehow infused with hopelessness and it's all just very awkward. but then I realized that hey, "Simple-X" and "Plasticities" are excellent songs, "Heretics" almost is (except the clever-clever spoken bridge thing which in a bizarre paradox is somehow both totally unexpected and totally autopilot Andrew-Bird-by-numbers), "Fiery Crash" is pretty good too, and all that has to count for something.

bernard snowy, Saturday, 23 June 2007 02:03 (eighteen years ago)

(but I still don't rate it anywhere near Mysterious Production of Eggs)

bernard snowy, Saturday, 23 June 2007 02:04 (eighteen years ago)

"Plasticities" is one of my favorite songs this year. But agree that it's not as solid as Mysterious Production. But ok, whatever, it's pretty different, also. A lot of it confused and surprised me. I rate that.

kenan, Saturday, 23 June 2007 02:40 (eighteen years ago)

Also, I love the lyrics of "Darkmatter"

kenan, Saturday, 23 June 2007 02:42 (eighteen years ago)

I am finding it hard to look over how incredibly annoying he was live. Fiery Crash is a thing of beauty howver, along with Scythian Empires and Plasticities. And damn good on headphones.

An overview, and points out all the good live stuff linked from his site: http://uweekly.com/newsmag/04-11-2007/5278

(except the clever-clever spoken bridge thing which in a bizarre paradox is somehow both totally unexpected and totally autopilot Andrew-Bird-by-numbers)

Yeah, that is really starting to annoy me...

This album has got to be one of the most beautifully produced and mastered of the year.

I know, right?, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 23:32 (eighteen years ago)

Everything about this guy is irritating, except for some of the music.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 23:46 (eighteen years ago)

I like a bit of it (whistling! shiny production!) but ugh lyrics

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 23:47 (eighteen years ago)

The lyrics are okay, try seeing him live, he's such a dickhead. What is it about these violin indie fey types. The only live act to ever out cunt him is Final Fantasy.

But seriously, this album sounds so beautiful. The two guitar sounds at the beginning of Fiery Crash alone are a masterclass in EQ staring.

I know, right?, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 23:50 (eighteen years ago)

And all bathed in lovely swirls of reverb.

I know, right?, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 23:51 (eighteen years ago)

Some fey violin indie types don't bother me at all, but this guy comes across like Sufjan + John Mayer or something, and he flaunts his virtuosity which is always a big turn-off.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 23:52 (eighteen years ago)

Well i just meant those two really.

I know, right?, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 23:53 (eighteen years ago)

And you shoulda seen Final Fantasy at Electric Picnic. He kept saying, "oh this bit is really difficult" and "wow, I love how much you're cheering". It was pretty gross.

I know, right?, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 23:57 (eighteen years ago)

ha, that is bad

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 00:00 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

^^^this seems to be common for solo looping dudes. in fairness, it does seem like a pretty exposed and stressful thing to do.
