A shy dutch kid from Pasadena turns out to be the most important thing to happen to rock guitar since Hendrix.

At my house, Cars > Police > Van Halen, tho to be honest I only ever owned the VH 45 of "You Really Got Me." Which is still not as good as "Just What I Needed."

Daniel Peterson (polkaholic), Thursday, 25 January 2007 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

at my house there would be a fight over this cuz while the wife and I both love VH I fuckin HATE the Police and she owns the box set. Personally tho VH>>the Cars>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>anything with Sting's name on it

1 Van Halen
close second: The Cars
distant 3rd: The Police

I like how this is essentially asking "What did Andrew WK listen to when he grew up?"

OUTED

I'm surprising myself with this one, but I think Van Halen, actually! If I'd been old enough to have an opinion at the time, I probably would have liked the Police better, and by the time I was old enough to have an opinion, I liked the Cars better, but that Van Halen seems to ... achieve more, I guess.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 25 January 2007 20:39 (eighteen years ago)

By "I was old enough to have an opinion" I mean that at age 7 I preferred Cars videos to Police videos, but whatever.

"Just What I Needed" > Van Halen > The Cars > Outlandos d'Amour.

I think.

(Cars = VH) > Police

the new sincerity (Pye Poudre), Thursday, 25 January 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

I think if all non-Sting members of the Police joined the Cars and David Lee Roth replaced Benjamin Orr in the new supergroup, that'd be cool with me. I'd even take over bass duties.

Well, it ain't the Police, that debut was half crap. So it comes down to: What was more revolutionary, Edward Van Halen's fingers or The Cars erasing the illusory boundaries between "new wave" and state-of-the-art AOR. Hmmm...I'm gonna say The Cars, just because they left themselves no room for improvement/diversification.

All three of 'em shoulda broken up simultaneously in '84.

The Cars. No mention yet of "Moving in Stereo"? Then the Police. Van Halen a distant third because I can't stand them.

vh > cars > police e-fucking-z

LO-NRG (teenagequiet), Friday, 26 January 2007 00:47 (eighteen years ago)

van halen, van halen, van halen. always and forever, van halen.

if 'I'm the one' does nothing for you, then I pity you. then I hate you. and your children. and your children's pets. and their mangy fur/scales/carapaces.

the police never did anything for me.

cars last because I've only ever heard one of their tunes, which was horrible, and the controversial production job ocasek did on 'rock for light'.

m the g (mister the guanoman), Friday, 26 January 2007 01:46 (eighteen years ago)

dude, it's the Cars. that album has more singles and pop know-how displayed on it than almost any other album of the eighties. it's sort of like Cyndi Lauper, but not so gay.

Also it's got this weird proggy thing going on? Well like only in the sense you might say early Journey was occasionally "proggy." Which is really stretching the meaning of "proggy," but there's a quality.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 26 January 2007 06:42 (eighteen years ago)

eight years pass...

all these years and i still can't really choose between The Cars and Van Halen.

resulting post (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 20 May 2015 01:52 (ten years ago)

but it's still the cars though

resulting post (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 20 May 2015 01:52 (ten years ago)

that's not my post, Wednesday, 20 May 2015 06:42 (ten years ago)
